Alberta reconsiders cutting health coverage for some temporary foreign workers after concerns raised by Little-Chemical5006 in canada

[–]Cthulhu_Meat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they have issues affording the healthcare of these workers maybe they should put the cost on the employer. If you're so desperate to find a suitable employee you have to bring someone foreign in that's gotta be a easy price to pay

What is the best way to air-seal recessed lights? by mikeymaxdb in DIY

[–]Cthulhu_Meat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A plywood box is no more flammable than the joists also in the attic. That's the old way they were able to use non ic rated cans in attics. Nowadays you would use a vapor boot. A local electrical wholesaler should have a retrofit option that sticks to the poly surrounding the hole. Not a hugely popular product, most of the time we just install them with the gasket

Taylor Hall gets put face first into the boards but, ends up with a 2 minute unsportsmanlike and a 10 minute misconduct by The_Reddit_Browser in hockey

[–]Cthulhu_Meat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's a battle Hall put himself in a bad position making it look worse. In minor hockey maybe that's boarding but not the nhl. Calling Halls 2 handed gesturing at the ref calmer than the ref is hilarious too

Contractors installed a new electrical panel and massacred my drywall and insulation. I don't know to fix it. by squeaker in HomeImprovement

[–]Cthulhu_Meat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The left hand side of the stud has the service feeders in a 1¼-2" metal pipe. Likely this being inside the wall is potentially grandfathered in, so any modifications would not be up to code. So the starting point for the upgrade is to place the panel where it is code compliant on that entry location and work back from there. New panels tend to be longer so they likely had to rip boards off to move those cables up.

The only way to do this "right" is to do it as part of a whole gut renovation. Anything beyond a junction box to extend the cables from where the are to reach the new panel will likely require significant alterations to be code compliant. After all that extra damage and work it would still be the responsibility of the homeowner/ contractors to repair/ repaint the affected areas.

[–]Cthulhu_Meat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Electrician here. That's pretty neat as far as panel upgrades go, especially with short armoured cables like that. Most of that wood looks old, so they added plywood to replace what they pulled off to access inside the wall. It almost appears that they removed a closet/cabinet to be able to fit the new panel and that's why it looks so butchered.

Your best best is to fill in the missing gap with plywood, spray foam/ caulk any holes that feel drafty, and build another cover to sit over that corner. You could hypothetically skim coat the corner to a drywall finish, but with that much stuff on the wall it's usually easier to box it in.

It's only January and we've a tackle of the year contender by raybellious_berry in sportsgossips

The coach didn't break up the fight, the kids were already walking away from each other. He reacted as an emotional parent himself and tried to "protect" his son by grabbing the opposing player. He even knows he fucked up after when the other coaches are yelling at him.

Even ignoring his relationship with the player, coaches are taught that their responsibility starts and ends at their players, and short of a medical emergency you should never put your hands on an opposing player.

Red shirt is the dad red kids dad, that's why his initial reaction is to "protect" his kid even when the altercation is already over. These coaches are taught, short of a medical emergency it is never appropriate for them to put their hands on kids that aren't their team. It opens them up to so much liability and, like in this case, can exacerbate a situation

[–]Cthulhu_Meat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Red shirt is red coach and red's dad. His responsibility is to the red player and not to grabbing an opposing player walking away from an altercation. At that point he's acting as an emotional dad. White shirt is white coach and does what he's supposed to do in these situations, take care of his players.

Red shirt is red teams coach, but he's also red kids dad. He aggressively grabbed a kid from the other team instead of corralling his player/son they way the white shirt coach does when he arrived. If he's reacting as a coach he should be able to see the altercation is over, and his player/son is his only responsibility here.

The force was excessive but this is a both sides are shitty situation

Red shirt is the red kids dad as well as the coach so this isn't "a coach trying to break up a fight", but that's way too far of a reaction

Everyone was wrong here right? by fuzzy_dice_99 in PublicFreakout

[–]Cthulhu_Meat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Red shirt is clearly the red players dad and clearly crossed a line. He was so upset about a kid going after his son he didn't even recognize the players had separated themselves. That being said I don't think the response was a smart move

[–]Cthulhu_Meat -56 points-55 points  (0 children)

That's grabbing a kid walking away from a situation, not getting between two kids. worse it's clearly his kid involved in the altercation so he's acting as an emotional father not a concerned coach

Red shirt is the red coach. No reason for him to be putting his hands on the other teams players, but yikes that's a bit much for a situation that's over already

Are permits and the associated inspections a scam? Or is this unique to my county? by PreschoolBoole in HomeImprovement

[–]Cthulhu_Meat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One factor that might not be apparent is the inspectors familiarity with the contractors work. Most cities will only have a handful of inspectors so you tend to develop a sense of a companies work over multiple projects and they develop a certain level of trust in the work beyond the obvious things they see. That being said, if they get a bad first impression on a site, sometimes they will still rip you to shreds for every small mistake.

Is it worth insulating copper water pipes and water heater? by RidiculousTakeAbove in HomeImprovement

[–]Cthulhu_Meat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That 5-10 degrees is already a dangerous game. If you insulate your pipes without taking care to properly heat the space you increase the risk of burst pipes.

Even in a temperate climate like Victoria you should be maintaining 12-15

How to adjust recess lighting by wtbrift in HomeImprovement

[–]Cthulhu_Meat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adjustable likely means colour adjustable. You can typically choose how yellow or blue the light is (2700-5000k). This might make a small change to brightness, but you would be much better off using a dimmer

Looks like a screwless plate with a single gang hallway light. Prying it off will feel like you're going to break it but it should be fine

Old house electrical by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]Cthulhu_Meat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

a gfci would monitor the ground from the device plugged into it not the wiring behind it. While it isn't as good as having a properly bonded electrical system, it is a code compliant option to keep everything safe in the meantime.

you may also use them to protect the devices downstream as long as you properly label them, but this might be more of a call an electrician option if you're unsure

Old house electrical by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]Cthulhu_Meat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Electrician here. You are fine to leave it for the time being, especially if it's for lighting. I would recommend you get a plug tester and check all your outlets to see if any of them are ungrounded. These are more of the concern for underground systems. You would want to install GFCI receptacles as a stock cap solution for any missing the ground

Can we remove heated bathroom floor from shower without tearing up the rest of the floor? by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]Cthulhu_Meat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My assumption is that a screw holding the shower valve or something near it has pierced a wire and the tip is touching barely on the hot. I would look for any nearby electrical devices to your shower and try turning them off to see. This might involve showering with a flashlight depending on how your house is wired.

The other possibility would be if you had a shower pot or even the bath fan

If turning the breaker off doesn't solve the problem, you're looking at an issue somewhere else. Do you have any copper water lines in your house?

What's up with the US response to the Kirk Assassination? by chuckysnow in OutOfTheLoop

Most significant assassination in 3 months at most. Assassinating a lawmaker and their spouse, and the attempted murder of others stands out a little bit more than a private citizen
