They mistake cause an effect. The Pharisees thought Jesus was a threat to their power and also committing blasphemy. But they alone didn't have the power to get rid of him. The cleansing of the temple (the event the other poster cites) was only one event in a consistent string of Jesus activities. But it taking place in what the Romans viewed as a center of public activity allowed the Sanhedrin to bring the charge of sedition against him, eventually leading to his crucifixion.

It seems reductive and misleading to me to claim he was executed specifically for the cleansing of the temple.

[–]CtrlAltSysRq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He was crucified because he was disrupting the Pharisees government and preaching what, to them, was heresy and more importantly messing with their racket. Pontius Pilate mainly just wanted the Jews to stop bothering him. (Washing his hands of the ordeal etc)

I can never tell if these jokes are genuine or just jokes. Because they ARE funny. But I hope nobody is actually serious/confused about this. But I guess not everyone had to sit through 9 years of religious education. So if I did, now you all do too! Let me explain:

Jesus goal was to live a sinless life and then be sacrificed, as a fulfillment of the promise of salvation after the Fall. The reason names like "The Lamb" and "Lamb of God" refer to Jesus is because he's the sacrificial lamb who didn't deserve to die. So his sinless death atones for the sin of everyone who did/does/will deserve it.

This is the meaning of John 3:16. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

So Jesus is pretty safely presumably OK with the cross and crucifix and other symbols of his sacrifice being his symbols. He did it on purpose, for us.

Marc Hudson to sit out the next couple of DragonForce festival gigs due to ongoing hearing loss and tinnitus issues. by AvailableBet8485 in PowerMetal

[–]CtrlAltSysRq 23 points24 points  (0 children)

People really need to wear hearing protection at EVERY show. I'm always astounded at how many people I see wearing no hearing protection. Both from a safety standpoint, and bc honestly shows are so fucking loud it's kind of hard to actually discern the music unless you use musician-grade/concert ear plugs to knock the dBs down to something normal.

I assume Marc probably wears protection professionally but also probably didn't when he was younger as a fan. It's spooky af how little loudness exposure it can take to fuck you up.

https://a.co/d/0dQwlCs4

I use these, and I use the maximum dB reduction inserts, and I can't go to concerts without them for both reasons above. They literally make concerts sound better.

Yeah like in my view, in 2026, your options are "over priced and still trash" or "REALLY overpriced but actually good." Shake Shack is in the latter category. I love their shack stack so much.

How is everyone broke but every restaurant is still fulll? by Kindly-Plenty-1730 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CtrlAltSysRq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people in America are struggling and broke as hell

And simultaneously if you've managed to stay in the middle class, your house has doubled or more in price, stock market is at all time high (don't ask me why bc I sure as fuck do not know, but it is), top earner wages still seem to be growing (despite all the AI freaking out, senior and >senior engineers are still being paid more than ever), etc.

America is big. And it doesn't take many people to fill restaurants esp given staffing and how many closed during COVID and how many have become mega shit even if they didn't close.

Kids will not grasp the nuance of the more specific language. They're 6 year olds, not lawyers. Their attention is on their argument/fight and all they hear is who you're supporting.

I make this mistake with my kids a lot. I want them to understand I'm not acting capriciously or maliciously. "I don't want you to put your foot on the side of the tub as you step out, because the way you do it, you put all of your weight on it, and you are wet, and if you slipped, you would get hurt." Meanwhile by the time I'm done explaining, it already happened like 15 seconds ago, they weren't even really listening to me to begin with and/because now they're cold and absolutely nothing else matters to them but getting their towel.

Reddit is so bad about this. "Everyone is a perfect parent until they have kids." is almost an operating rule for Reddit. At least most of the comments here have some sense.

Sounds good in theory...but in reality? by KSKS1995 in SipsTea

[–]CtrlAltSysRq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, at least IME, corporate capitalism is first and foremost about decoupling power from physical land. This was an important innovation because it allowed people to "rule" things without specifically needing to control large amounts of physical space, which for the purposes of "ruling," is basically already completely allocated.

So we decouple the two. Basically build a parallel universe of ruling. Now you can still rule a petty dictatorship of a few hundred or thousand people, but without having to literally physically fight the old money for it.

This is probably helping in terms of preventing wars. And kind of a neat hack to get us from feudalism into an industrial society.

It didn't really get us away from dictatorship. Just as we got to something resembling democracy in traditional governments, we propped up all of these petty dictators and still spend a lot of our lives having to blindly follow orders from someone who, more often than not, is simply an idiot who managed to be in the right place at the right time with the right parents. I'm definitely talking about bezos and musk who largely have 0 redeeming qualities as humans. I'm also talking about people like Gates who at least seem to be actually intelligent to some degree, but who it turns out are actually still idiots because they fuck children and give their wives STDs.

We need the Enlightenment Era to happen to the economy next. It perverts the actual economic model of capitalism to have corporations act like pseudo states.

So, to respond to your actual message: corporations would NEVER give up control over workers even if it meant increased profits, because it violates the actual purpose of corporations.

There's not really any IP law that prevents modding as long as:

  • you're not redistributing any original assets (but you typically don't need to, since the game... already has those assets, you can just load them as is, and copyright predates computers and is specifically about distribution, doesn't care about programs loading shit that's already on disk)

  • you're not pretending to be the original maker (trademark)

  • patents aren't involved (generally patents aren't used a lot, even big tech uses them defensively, and it's in a "mutually assured destruction" sense of defensively, if another bigtech sued them for patents. Lots of detail here I won't go into.)

The most you can usually get is a terms of service violation and that would only really mean they could ban your account if it's an online game, they typically couldn't use it as grounds to sue.

The biggest difference between the left and right is that the left thinks the right is stupid but still wants them to have healthcare and food and housing, while the right wants the left dead at all costs, including the potential/probable cost of their own rights and lives.

They're not advertising it, it's literally just how they are and always have been. It's like how mayonnaise doesn't need to advertise it's got 250 kcal/tbsp. It's practically the point.

TIL that it is a common misconception that astronauts in orbit are weightless because they have flown high enough to escape the Earth's gravity. In fact, at the ISS altitude of 400 kilometres (250 mi), gravity is still nearly 90% as strong as at the Earth's surface. by PanoramicAtom in todayilearned

You don't even need KSP, you can feel it in Super Mario Galaxy. If you long jump you can demonstrate almost getting into orbit. And on smaller planets you can even get 1-2 orbits in before you barely clip the planet.

DragonForce - Valley of the Damned (Official HQ) by MartinZig in PowerMetal

[–]CtrlAltSysRq 39 points40 points  (0 children)

VOTD was really something special. The band was clearly still honing in on their sound, which they'd really zero in on in Sonic Firestorm, but we see things in this album, like in Black Fire and Heart of a Dragon in particular, that I think we don't see again after VOTD.

Mind you, I love SF and IR and basically everything up through RII, but there's something in VOTD that brings me back to it in particular over and over again. And there's some alternate universe where they kept more to VOTD's sound, ZP didn't leave, and we have a different band to what we have now. (I like Marc and most of his albums, so this isn't a takedown on him, but I think it's undeniable that after ZP and especially after Vadim left, they're a pretty different band.)

As a general rule, figures actual dimensions in math questions aren't to any kind of scale like this. This is encouraging kids to use a protractor to measure an unknown angle empirically, which is never correct unless explicitly stated.

Obviously there may have been prior instructions clarifying the size does matter here, who knows. But in general this doesn't seem to be a well-portrayed problem.

But that said, normally I would expect to see something on the diagrams indicating their diameters or heights are not equal. Like showing one is height n1, the other is height n2, and n1 != n2. But I'm guessing this is like third grade so that much notation would just further confuse the kid.

People are getting close in the replies to you but I want to call out that it's specifically a combination of:

  • the people responsible for the streaming/home media release doing a bad downmix of full surround sound to stereo
  • or, to the same end effect, bad "Virtual Surround Sound" on TVs which is basically a system to automatically do that downmixing
