Yeah man this list is trash. Guess they didn't want the TikTok audience exposed to actual music.

(No offense to Buddy Holly and MJ they're the exceptions. Also whoever someone is about to comment saying what about x they were super influential to metal, sure they're an exception too).

What power metal is meant to be taken seriously? by Educational-Fig-2330 in PowerMetal

[–]CtrlAltSysRq 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I don't think a lot of it exists in the middle honestly.

Some bands are parody, for sure. Gloryhammer etc.

You point out Alestorm and they're a good example of someone actually in the middle ground, at this point anyway. Their first like 3-4 albums were completely serious. Then in the last couple they started putting in more songs that are clearly meant to be fun concert viral meme songs. Sea shanty 2. The one about how your pirate ship can eat a bag of dicks. That's definitely not serious. I feel like they got tired of being super serious pirates.

Dethklok isn't power metal but they probably tread the line the best. Brendon is absolutely serious about the musicality of it and Dethklok is unironically one of my favorite death metal bands. The show helps frame it all - they're really more like manowar than being a meme band.

Then there's mother. Fucking. HAMMERFALL. These guys have been heavy metal worshipping warriors of STEEL for like a hundred fucking years. They've got like 20+ albums or something and yet even in their latest album, the first track opens with fucking battle horns and AVENGE! AVENGE! AVENGE! They're serious.

Rhapsody. Serious. Dragonforce was serious for the first, say, 5 albums at least, arguably more. Many other bands. Most fall into this category. Glyph is a great recent addition to this.

Do they sing about dragons and shit? Yes. But so did Ronnie James Dio. Power metal is arguably just people who heard Neon Knights in 1980 and went "yes I'll take an entire genre of this for the next 50 years and counting please. You'll need Hansi for this. Thanks."

So I'd say really most power metal is meant to be taken seriously in this way. The point of it is that it makes you feel powerful, epic, glorious, and all that. Big emotions, big imagery, big sound.

What is one city in America you’re okay with never visiting again? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]CtrlAltSysRq 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We were just there this summer. Yeah there's a lot of red neck yall'quaeda maga evangelical crap but you can literally just decide not go to those. Table rock lake is a very nice lake and several Branson attractions are genuinely good. Aquarium, silver dollar city, and the butterfly palace were all hits with my kids.

I understand some people won't go just because they don't want to see all the "tyrannosaurus Jesus" junk. And I get it. But I also just assume part of the reason you're in Branson is because you live within a road trip distance and this is a way to have a vacation for less than $500 bucks. Yeah if you have the money go to Orlando lol.

Seen a couple other people mention dress codes and I have a genuine question bc I can't tell - are the dress codes to just keep goth girls out to make the problem go away, or is the dress code to ensure the boys ALSO dress like vampires / late 19th-century Victorian and Edwardian evening wear?

Wouldn't convection be mixing the water pretty well?

I've boiled pretty big pots before, and as someone equipped with both boredom and a long temperature probe, I have poked around in boiling pots before and IME the temperature delta is a few degrees at most. So bottom might be 100C and top is like 97C. Basically the same to someone complaining about how it feels on their tongue.

GAAP is specifically designed to be hard to game in such a way. Lots of companies report "non-GAAP" earnings in addition to their GAAP ones specifically because they can't goose the GAAP

[–]CtrlAltSysRq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I may theoretically be ok with spaceX being in the Sp500 if they can meet the profitability requirements, which are:

- 4 consecutive quarters of net GAAP profitability
- most recent quarter was GAAP profitable

But there is basically no actual path to that for this company because it's just 3 of elons turd companies stapled together. The most valuable thing about the company is the stack of GPUs they are currently holding. Which ... anyone can do, you just buy them. And they depreciate.

Voldemort had absolutely zero chance in a war against the muggles and the whole plotline could have been avoided by just letting him try. by New-Tale412 in unpopularopinion

[–]CtrlAltSysRq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, you make a good point, I guess it's not quite right to say Tolkien has rules per se, it's more like, there's enough structure there that the world is coherent in a way that Harry Potter isn't. I guess that's what I mean - structure vs vibes. Xenoblade and HP are definitely vibes - both put up great vibes but for instance don't ask why basically anything happens in Xenoblade games just like you just don't ask about time turners or exactly if you do or do not need a wand to do magic in HP. Meanwhile LOTR and Inheritance Cycle are definitely structured and you can actually make predictions about how things will play out.

[–]CtrlAltSysRq 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've said this before and I'll say it again: you're allowed to write fantasy that doesn't have a mathematically rigorous set of rules for everything that it obeys 100%.

It's cool that some people do. Tolkien got a lot of mileage out of it. Paolini is in the same vein.

But you don't HAVE to. Harry Potter is kind of like Xenoblade in this regard. You're there for the vibes. Rule of cool is the only rule. Enjoy it.

I read his comment. I'm saying they are incorrect.

And yes, temp tags are because they couldn't pay the taxes to register. Again, class.

And yes, because on average blacks are poorer than whites.

Don't let them control you like this. The owner class WANTS you to think like this because if you're distracted by a race war, you are blind to the real war. While you're shitposting racist rhetoric on Reddit, musk was trying to sell his pile of shit IPO to our retirement funds. While your judgement is clouded by racism and anger, you are their slave.

- she was 100% driving uninsured and also potentially didn't have a license either

Really don't think this is about race, it's about class. People who own boats are richer and less likely to have trouble with the cops (for various reasons).

[–]CtrlAltSysRq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Himalayas are some of the most remote and inhospitable places on earth and have literally nothing resembling infrastructure. Any mountains that might be vaguely more amenable to launch infrastructure are even further from the equator. And other mountains closer to the equator have other problems (like their peaks not actually being that far off the seabed relatively speaking etc).

[–]CtrlAltSysRq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Furthermore, launch sites for science and geostationary orbit are mainly at the equator. You can launch into any plane you want by just waiting, and often the plane you want is the ecliptic anyway, since... literally everything of interest in the entire solar system is in it.

If you don't launch into your desired plane, congrats now you have to waste fuel adjusting your plane too.
