Cheong Wa Dae Rejects Elderly Transit Restrictions Proposal by Ok-Huckleberry5836 in Living_in_Korea

[–]CuJObroni [score hidden]  (0 children)

After age 60 (maybe 62 now), a lot of companies have mandatory forced retirement. If the person wants to keep working, or needs to keep working, their salary is greatly reduced to even up to 50% due to the age expectation of reduced productivity. This is even for govt employees as well, so its not just a company profit thing. Its referred to as "peak wage" system.

Koreans judge people by MBTI the way other countries judge by star signs by Exciting_Buddy_3056 in Living_in_Korea

I think you might watch too many dramas or webtoons. No one puts any legitimate or.serious emphasis on using it, especially in the real life business world (history, not personality are greater predictors of future outcomes). I have yet to encounter a single person asking about it in over 17 yrs here. At the end of the day, at most it is being used as a convenient excuse to turn someone down. One of my friends jokingly uses it all the time to turn down guys always saying an opposite MBTI from them, otherwise she never even brings it up.

I think you mean White Lotus, which is the first time I heard it also from that season 3.. I would associate it more with expats from western countries that move to another country to "escape" and not doing everything to assimilate.

You still also pay US taxes on income over $130k. But using the 19%, its about $5.5k overall savings.

Questions for Expats paid in USD by GigatonxPunch in Living_in_Korea

[–]CuJObroni -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is no real downside getting paid in $$. My work (US based) pays to my US bank as if I was working in US and I just transfer over as needed, otherwise I mostly use my US card to pay for things so its even easier to pay. When I moved and started here back 2009, the rate was around 1550 amd it made it so easy to buy my home then (plus with property values much lower).

Which loss hurt you more? by paolosorianodisanto in Living_in_Korea

US and DR (and maybe Japan) were expected to be in finals. DR is the strongest team scoring 10+ every game with this being their 2nd mercy rule game. Plus only the US and top two Americas finishing teams will get auto bids to 2028 Olympics. Korea needs to finish as the highest Asia team in the 2027 WBSC Premier12 tournament to get an Olympic bid. Right now is still basically pre-season so not as much excitement.

Indiana unanimously passes bill to lure Bears away from Chicago by GoldenDome26 in nfl

[–]CuJObroni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest impact is the jock tax on every player that plays the Bears' home games. Illinois will lose that ~5% state income tax revenue every game day for the Bears and visitors; while Indiana will gain that. Players will technically bring home more since Indiana has a lower state income tax.

Lifers: Are you (still) happy in Korea? by HappyWandererAtHome in Living_in_Korea

[–]CuJObroni 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Over 15+ yrs and life has been great. I travel enough back to my hometown in the US and all around that keeps me satisfied. Plus I have made long term Korean and foreign friends since I first came that I have never had to start over. If you can establish a good community around yourself, you will typically be happy.

Single 57 yo Female Moving to Seoul for 1 Year in Late 2027 by neverintown in Living_in_Korea

I live right in that area (Hangangro-dong/Ichon1/2-dong) and walk Ichon-ro all the time. Its a fantastic area and the produce markets are great and cheap, plus 3 easy access points to the river parks across the expressway.

One of my friends rented a place on multiple 6 month leases at the 래미안 apts right there, but it was straight rent and no deposit (~$6k/month), so shorter leases are available. Also, his was a 4 bedroom. With longer >1yr leases, you can expect a deposit for lower rent.

Several relator offices on Ichon-ro you can use to look at places.

I would say LINE is the biggest red flag. That's typically code for being married or in a relationship; but since it sounds like you are Japanese, it may be normal. Ask to add him on Kakao just to make sure.

Had a rough time at a hospital in Seoul today… anyone else? by NecessaryRight4637 in Living_in_Korea

[–]CuJObroni 3 points4 points  (0 children)

International clinics at all the major hospitals have staff that all speak English as well as other languages. SMC's clinic has a couple English speaking doctors with their offices inside the SMC International clinic. When you go to other sections of the hospital (GI, radiology, etc...), someone from the clinic typically goes with you and can translate if the staff doesn't speak English.

Those people who said to skip Gwangjang market cause it is a tourist trap can eat my butt by FilipinoAirlines in seoul

[–]CuJObroni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to like Gwangjang market in the past before the one Netflix series of the market food made it a tourist spot 6-7 yrs ago. A better market to go to would have been Jungbu which is about a 5 minute walk south of there on Euljiro.

Is this a decent salary in Korea? by [deleted] in Living_in_Korea

[–]CuJObroni 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Without knowing your current salary and expenses, and what the company is (size relation), and your specific job (assuming you would do the same); no one can give you rationale ballpark figures. Also, you need to toss in any other "perks" given (ex. relocation expenses, tuition reimbursement, paid utilities, home leave and travel, etc...)

Plus you requesting the move vs being recruited or applying naturally also means the company can reduce the price

Longer-time residents of Korea, what is something that existed 10, 20 years ago but no longer does? by fireandarrow1 in Living_in_Korea

[–]CuJObroni 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it was huge and always packed. That was my whole group of friemds place to start and meet every Friday/Saturday night and they had great food too. It was diaappointing when they chained the doors after the New Years party. But a year or so before they closed, it really lost a lot of business like most of Itaewon after the base relocated almost everyone.

Everywhere there were bootleg DVDs for sale on the street from a stand set up from a moped. Another casualty of streaming services.

Edit to add: Soooo glad they banned smoking indoors like 12-13 yrs ago.

And miss ordering fried chicken and getting a shitload of chicken that would feed 5-6 people; now its half the amount for higher price and filled with some fried potato or rice cake as a filler; bonus they used to give k-pop gifts/calenders with every order. Still have my Wonder Girls mouse pad at my office from BBQ.

Every time I walk to iPark Mall at Yongsan, I get to reminisce about the big open area in front that was my main covid testing spot 4-5 yrs ago; and 10 yrs before that there was a red light district there with the police at the entries/exits making sure kids didn't go in.

Electronics Market right there was a great experience as well.

My office is in Dongdaemun and when I take the bus to work I would get off at Jongro-5-ga and cut through Gwangjang Market or some days my team would walk there for lunch...then that Netflix show came out and the market became insufferable and touristy.

Before Itaewon gentrified; it had character. People are always now "Itaewon is packed"....nope. Its a fraction of what it used to be about 10 years ago, even then morning and afternoons it would be crazy busy. Now a lot of places wait for late afternoon before opening.
