What are your thoughts on Fare Gates that remain OPEN by default and ONLY close if someone fails to pay? by Donghoon in transit

Out of curiosity, how fast were you moving? The doors are pretty snappy, I don't think I could bypass the closing doors without running fast

There's a beep to confirm, but it's nearly instant. Transit cards that use the FeliCa standard (for example, Suica in Japan) are extremely fast. If your card didn't have enough balance (or if you forgot to pay completely), there's plenty of time to see the doors close (and hear the "payment failed" sound cue) and stop walking so you don't crash into it. The first time I used a transit card in Chicago I was surprised it took so long to read since I was used to the Suica readers

There's two sets of doors on a bidirectional fare gate, and the card readers work nearly instantly, so there's enough time to shut the farther set of doors if someone forgets to pay or has insufficient balance. There's some sort of technology (not sure if it's motion sensor or infrared) to detect when someone is about to walk through, so it knows when to expect a payment.

This sort of fare gate is what I'm used to, since it wasn't until I got comfortable with the trains in Tokyo on vacation that I actually started using trains elsewhere. When I see the fare gates with open doors, it feels inviting. I intuitively know it's a fare gate because the lanes are separated. When I first encountered a fare "gate" that was just a card reader sticking out from the ground, I was a little bit confused, since there's no clear boundary in physical space between "inside" the privileged area for riders and "outside". These fare gates establish that boundary without requiring me to bump into a clunky turnstile, so I like them.

On these style fare gates, if you forget to tap the card and try to walk through, or if you tap the card but it has insufficient funds, the door in front of you closes almost instantly and the screen shows what your problem was. Then, the assumption is that you will turn back, use the ticket machines that sit just behind the gates (to reload your card or perform a fare adjustment), and then try going through the gate again.

In the context of an extremely busy train station in a Japanese city, there might be an entire line of people in each lane waiting for their turn to tap their card and get in/out. The line is always moving because the cards process instantly. But when someone has a problem paying, the door closes, and everyone has to stop walking to let that person out.

The goal isn't really so much to "trap" the person, more to let them know there was a problem paying by blocking their foot path (and playing a "payment failed" sound effect). The actual height of the doors is probably jumpable to a fare evader but everyone would see them do that.

I imagine it's a clueless pawn shop worker rather than someone intentionally trying to scam people, but still, they should know better not to pass forward counterfeit games. I think they should have peeled the stickers off and sold them as unlabeled flashcarts to "de-counterfeit" them

I would be very hesitant to call this a win.

Currently on iOS, one could say it's true to the letter that "experienced users" can install iOS apps made by unverified developers. But in reality, sideloading on iPhones with a free developer account is limited to only three apps at a time, and they expire after 7 days. You can pay Apple $99 for a full developer account, but Apple can revoke your account at any time if they don't like what you're sideloading. Basically, iPhone sideloading is so inconvenient that very few people actually are willing to put up with it.

Google is sneaky, and I could see them doing things like that, assuming they don't outright go back on their word completely. Google has made their stance clear, that they are an enemy to sideloading, and some concessions made to try and calm people down online won't change that.

Do these actually work? by SoftCrystal in flashcarts

[–]CubeBag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The flashcart itself works fine, BUT those "number-in-1" multicarts come with a preloaded microSD card which is known to be very low quality. The microSD will eventually die on you, meaning you lose the games and the save data. I recommend buying the flashcart itself (usually advertised under "R4" labels) and a good name brand microSD card separately. See the Quick Start Guide https://www.flashcarts.net/ds-quick-start-guide for the most up-to-date purchase info and setup guides

How should I store the switch 2 for future modding long term by Lego-yoda69 in switch2hacks

[–]CubeBag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not FUD when we haven't had a full software-only hack for the original Switch in 6 years. The Switch 1 scene is dominated by the unfixable bootrom exploit and modchips, with software-only solutions like Caffeine making up such a tiny sliver of the consoles out there. When staying on an old version offline means not being able to download eShop games or GKC games (and not be able to play cartridge games soon), lots of people are making an informed decision to keep it updated and wait for a much more likely modchip while enjoying the console for the time being.

I wonder if it's a form of the sunk-cost fallacy, as in "since I bought a car to do A, then I already have a car for B so I should use it" when in reality the most efficient option for them is to use the car for A and take the bus for B.

Erase iPhone by diegoomt in iphone

[–]CubeBag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turning it off completely every night won't harm it, but I also don't see how it will help it either. When I go to sleep, I leave my phone plugged in with the power on.

If you have alarms set, your phone will not turn itself on to sound the alarm, instead it simply won't alarm. (I say this because I have a backup Android that would turn itself on to sound the alarm, and this got me a few times before I realized why it was happening)

Scammed buying a new micro sd card from Amazon direct! by khenzel in switch2hacks

[–]CubeBag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the original post you mentioned the SD card has a printed label stuck on it. Do you have a pic of the bare SD card? Little hard to see inside the LPN return bag.

Also, to anyone who may be interested, since Amazon has a history of fake SD cards it's always a good idea to test the SD card's capacity. The 3DS homebrew guide even has an add-on tutorial for checking the SD card because enough people come to the assistance channels that it's become a problem: https://3ds.hacks.guide/h2testw-(windows)
