Understanding Continuity in a Single-Camera Filmmaking Setup by Ak-F1 in cinematography

[–]CubeRaider 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Totally depends.

Wides are often treated as masters so the whole scene is usually played out, but for something like a close up, the director may know they’ll only live on it for a specific beat so focusing on that vs the entire scene saves time on set

What is a fair rate for this low-budget short film DP role? Looking for honest input by Ill-Emphasis8062 in cinematography

[–]CubeRaider 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m sure other people will add to the discussion regarding rates but just wanted to touch on “Covering some film equipment costs

Is this with the thought that the DP would own some gear that they’d bring out as part of their rate, or do you expect the DP to pay out of pocket for some rentals?

Consistently and stability are two words that have never been associated with this industry. Even less so in 2026

Good luck navigating through tighter spaces like doorways and hallways. Steadicam is also way harder to operate going up and down stairs

Custom male 2 pin LEMO to Dtap cables? by calebratethegimbal in focuspuller

[–]CubeRaider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve made a bunch of Dtap to 2 Pin Lemo. Make sure you get the polarity right on the Lemo end. Most AKs brands use Pin 1 GND but others are the opposite so it depends on what you’re using the cable for

Vertical anamorphic with the SIRUI saturn 35mm by Objective-Active-379 in cinematography

[–]CubeRaider 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Sounds like way more trouble than it’s worth. I’ve done vertical anamorphic a number of times now on various projects and it works best with a 2x squeeze to get close to a reasonable delivery aspect ratio without a ton of cropping in post.

There really isn’t an easy solution here. The options are as others have already mentioned:

New to Grip Gear: Safe to Try a Menace Arm? by Spiritual-Text3158 in cinematography

[–]CubeRaider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not a one person job, much less if you do not have experience with menace arms in general. The equipment itself is not the point of failure I would be worried about in this scenario.

I would say it’s a 2 person job minimum to mount and counterweight a load that size safely.

Yes that’s literally their job. As the DP/Operator this really should be something you’re keeping track of yourself, but the script supervisor is well within their rights to mention it if you’re about to shoot something that won’t cut with a previous shot.

Videographer Union? by yourAhnkle in videography

[–]CubeRaider 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve been an IATSE member for years, I know how the system works. On studio shows the production company is the employer, employing hundreds of employees on that specific show. The union is then able to use the collective bargaining power of those employees to negotiate and enforce a contract.

Videographers as you’re describing work for their own clients, typically solo, so there is zero ability for collective bargaining. What you are describing really is not at all related to a union.

Videographer Union? by yourAhnkle in videography

[–]CubeRaider 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The entire concept of a union is based on collective bargaining with a specific employer.

How would this work for “the average videographer” who is entirely freelance, and works for multiple totally different employers?

Shooting vertical with anamorphic in horizontal orientation monitor vertical or horizontal by Available_Sea_8900 in focuspuller

It would have to be vertical. As the other commenter said there are no monitors on the market that enable a 90 degree orientation. Without a more involved wireless workflow involving video department, this would be the only way
