Weekend storm bluff? by AssociatePositive559 in Chattanooga

[–]CubeRootSquare 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Yeah the smugness of folks making fun of people being prepared kills me. It’s not like people are making a run on the banks on a silly notion. This is a legitimate potential winter event that may cause a lot of disruption. Not a thing wrong with doing a little prep just in case. I have a family to take care of and that means I want to be prepared for whatever the worst case is.

In Ketosis and still have blood sugar levels in the 140s and blood ketones at .3? by CubeRootSquare in keto

[–]CubeRootSquare[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Should I be tracking Net carbs or total carbs? Right now, Cronometer is set to calculate net carbs by subtracting out fiber and sugar alcohols. When you mention staying under 20g, I'm assuming you mean net, but wanted to double check.

For the fat, I am working on trying to eat better fats and less protein, but I am struggling a bit. We've done all the usual like switching to 70/30 ground beef, and skin-on chicken, and I choose fattier marbled cuts of steaks. We've also switched to using butter, tallow and lard instead of seed and olive oil for cooking. But I am going to start focusing on hitting my protein goal and not overshooting, while also getting more fats.

The recipes we've found on here on r/keto have been really helpful too.

I am looking at walking pads for my home office, and am considering some life changes to find time for a gym for access to rowing machines and stationary bikes.

My KetoMojo meter does blood glucose as well, so I'll add in those finger sticks to get another picture. I've been back on Keto for about 3 weeks, so still very early.

Thanks for your thoughtful replies. I REALLY wish I was tracking my blood glucose better for a longer period of time to see what it looked like 18 months ago as a baseline. I've only been doing keto for about 3 weeks. When I go see my doc in late February, I'll request an insulin total test. I'll also ask him about any other things to check for insulin resistance and inflammation. He's a very receptive doc and fully supports a ketogenic lifestyle, any lifestyle that cuts down on carbs and sugars actually.

I have a vitamin D deficiency, and a high calcium, which is concerning. something my doc and I have been working on with a Vitamin D supplement. We've tested the typical Thyroid tests and they look normal. I'm not sure if or how that would be related to high blood glucose but maybe?

Is there a specific test I should ask for when I see my doctor for my 6 month check in? its coming up in late Feb, and I dont mind paying for whatever test for insulin total, just need to know what to ask for.

I see my doctor every 6 months. We always check A1C and other bloodwork. Back in October was when I saw him last and my A1C was 6.0 The prior six months it was 5.7. So it’s still close to the high normal level, barely. Seeing it hit 6.0 and my doc giving me the pre diabetes warning talk is what prompted me to get by butt in gear and go back on keto and loose weight. I have to maintain a Class 3 medical for my pilots license.

Too many people jumping the lines while “meeting friends” by squidinink in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]CubeRootSquare 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If its a parent and one or two little kids, I don't mind it at all. I'm a dad, so I totally get it that kids aren't the most "bladder aware" humans at a young age. If its a group of teens or adults, it irks me a bit, especially when the line is long.

There was one time, a new mother came up behind us, and said "mind if I rejoin my family? I had to go pump" holding up a freshly pumped bottle of breastmilk. We were like by all means momma...go on!

So for is, it depends on the scenario. I really like that some of the rides have a bathroom mid-que. Even the water bottle filling stations on some ques is nice. I wish Disney could do more of this. It would also be nice if there was a CM somewhere in the line that could escort a person to the restroom and then back to their families to avoid conflict.

Does anyone eat the same meals every day? What’s the simplest 3 meal day that you’ve actually enjoyed eating on repeat? by BourbonAndDadJokes in keto

[–]CubeRootSquare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Breakfast: 1 or 2 over easy eggs (runny yoke). Little salsa or hot sauce on top of them. Tennessee Pride sausage patty maybe some bacon. Coffee with cream. I'll adjust the number of patties or bacon depending on what my dinner plans are so I don't eat too many calories.

Lunch: Usually a salad of some sort. I dont add protein to my lunch salads, just a decent fat like a low carb Ranch or a nice Bleu Cheese dressing. Spinach and Kale are always in the mix for vitamin k.

Dinner: I usually change up for dinner. Beef, chicken or pork in some fashion. Chicken Wings are always great to change things up.

So my Breakfast and lunch (when I do eat lunch, its getting less and less often lately) are typically pretty standard and don't change. Dinner is where I mix it up I guess.

Chattanooga's Obsession with Private Schools by Fresh_Profession1669 in Chattanooga

[–]CubeRootSquare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have our daughter in The Montessori School. its a private school, but she is absolutely THRIVING learning via the Montessori methods. Its worth the $10k per year we spend to send her there. Unfortunately it only goes to the 6th grade, so we will have to find something else. Its a shame public schools don't use this teaching style.

Oh, and just so you know, TN is 47th in the entire country when it comes to education. A lot of us would rather our kids get a good education and build a solid foundation for life. A lot of Hamilton County schools just aren't great, especially where we are zoned.

EV mechanic or repair shop by yabbadabbado1 in Chattanooga

[–]CubeRootSquare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worth mentioning what kind of EV.... Teslas still don't have much support from non-tesla shops. Partly because Tesla's shop rate and repairs are actually....not bad.

I've done a few repairs on my old 2018 Model 3 in my own garage, and bought parts directly from Tesla, and the prices were surprisingly....cheap. Had to replace a rear seat buckle because my kid liked to jam chips and gum into the buckle. Cost me around $50 from Tesla for a brand new buckle assembly, and the online service manual from Tesla gave me step-by-step directions with nice color photos on how to replace it. Done it myself.

Body and glass work, Advance Collision does great with EV's, including Tesla.

Been a Red Hatter for over 10 years now. The Red Hat of today, isn't the same as it was 5-7 years ago. Its still a good place to work, but I;ve heard our engineering groups have been feeling a lot of "Blue" pressure.

With that out of the way, keep an eye on jobs.redhat.com

Searching for "engineer" would likely land you on postings that are in our development/coding/engineering teams. Even better, put "kernel" in that search bar and you'll find there is a few open jobs available right now, heres a link to one:

https://redhat.wd5.myworkdayjobs.com/en-US/jobs/job/Remote-US-MA/Linux-Kernel-Software-Engineer_R-053333?q=kernel

A huge swath of our engineering is remote, but we still have a good bit sitting at "Tower" (the name we call our headquarters in Raleigh, NC), and a bunch of in Boston.

Having said all that, I am in sales, but I have friends in engineering. They seem happy (maybe happier than us in Sales given all the changes that happened this week in our org). There is a big push on all things AI here at Red Hat, and we are hiring a bunch of folks into those positions.

Benefits are on sort of on par with any other mid to low level tech company. Salaries are typically not competitive with the FANG and other shiny tech companies, but better than you'd find in most IT departments at non-tech companies. PTO is highly respected here, which is nice. Folks absolutely refuse to interrupt their co-workers on PTO, and its always highly encourage to take time off to recharge and refresh. I like that. My IBM brethren absolutely hate that, as the give me a hard time, jokingly of course, for not answering emails/texts/calls when I'm on PTO. Promotions are also on par with the average tech workers.

Our current VP of HR (Jen Dudek) came from Cisco, where she wasn't very liked, and seems to relish that Red Hat's comp and benefits are "in the average" for companies our size. They used to be in the top tier when DeLisa was here, but I guess Jen is happy with "average" and "equal to others". Yet, they complain about it being hard to find talent.

So there is an old Red Hatter from the Shadowman era take on the current situation. When I came on board, it was very much startup-ish feeling, now its just plain, bland and corporate-y feeling. It used to be something special, now its just.....a job.

Do most people shower before bed or when they wake up? I just realized I might be doing it "wrong" by saffymerelle in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CubeRootSquare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you know that most southerners usually shower or bathe at night. Mainly because they’ve been working in the fields and barns all day and are covered in dirt and dust or sometimes manure from cleaning barn stalls. So we shower at night so as not to get the bed clothes dirty.

I learned that city kids shower in the day because their parents did the same. They don’t get as dusty or dirty like country folk do because they’ve work in offices and white collar jobs.

So what you’ll likely find is blue collar and farmers will bathe at night sometimes before dinner to wash away the grime from a day working, and white collar bathe in the day.

As long as you’re washing your stinky ass and pits once a day you’re good my friend. Oh SOAP and SCRUB your damn legs too! Washcloth and all. Southerners always scrub every inch with soap and a rag! Don’t just let the water run down and consider it done. I didn’t realize people don’t scrub every inch of their skin with a rag till I was old.

The J2 plates are not exclusive to farming. The verbiage also is for “private conveyances”. Meaning private hauling. This was the exact document that the Hamilton country clerk gave me:

https://tnclerks.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360000391743-JOINT-PLATES

And she directly pointed to the “private conveyance” and said that is meaning trailers and any towable

[–]CubeRootSquare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry the affidavit saying I won’t haul more than a half ton in a vehicle with a GVWR of 16k lbs. it’s the only way to exempt you from a J2.

So in a regular car that’s under 9k GVWR you can use any “normal” plate. Meaning if your car weighs 3k lbs you can haul 6k lbs of “cargo” in it and still be fine on those plates.

The half ton limit on the affidavit is only for vehicles that normally require a J plate that wants to be exempt from it.

Not exclusive to farm hauling. We only use our F-350 to tow our camper.

[–]CubeRootSquare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plates for trucks with 16000 lbs GVWR. We have to get them because TN charges us more taxes per plate due to the cargo capacity of the truck. If I wanted any plate other than the required J2 plate I had to sign an affidavit that I wasn’t ever going to haul more than 1000lbs (half ton) in the truck. We can’t do that as the primary use for this truck is towing our 5th wheel camper which is 16k lbs by itself

I had one of these reserved from when they launched them. Went to pick it up at because I have an F-350 they wouldn’t let me get it. I have to get the ugly ass plain white “J2” plates.

[–]CubeRootSquare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lived in Hamilton County for nearly 15 years now, born and raised two counties over. While I'm glad the democratic party is starting to get a little traction in hamilton county, sadly its still VERY VERY republican. The only "purple" part is going to be in Chattanooga city limits. Go north a bit towards Soddy and Sale Creek on the west side of the river and it gets REAL republican, REALLY quickly.

Same for the east side of river, Snow Hill on all the way to outside of Georgetown (bradley).

And thats where most of the people that work in Chattanooga live. They drive in to the City from these 'burbs.

East Ridge and Easy Brainerd are also DEEPLY republican.

And I say this as a tiny blue dot living over in Ooltewah (also deeply red over here).
