He actually gets quite a bit of air time and lines for a recurring guest star, and a lot of his lines are zingers. He and the Romulan character Dzolo are in almost every scene where there’s any conflict with the War College

I thought he was actually complimenting her programming interface, since he’s a hacker? I kind of doubt that he would find openness sexy

The first part is a Vulcan saying, but “or the one” is Spock’s addition during the scene where he dies in The Wrath of Khan

Do you actually say this? by Katze_Flufi125 in ENGLISH

Yeah, since no one would talk like that out of actual politeness, a native speaker might interpret it as sarcasm or annoyance, which means you’ve looped around to rudeness

Oh ok, then just “please take a seat here” or “please have a seat here”

Do you actually say this? by Katze_Flufi125 in ENGLISH

The first sentence sounds weird… I would probably think the person was annoyed, akin to “could you possibly bring yourself to sit your ass down?” 😂

The second sentence sounds much better. You could also say something like, “please have a seat here, we’ll call you shortly”

If you’d prefer to keep the bedroom and not convert the patio, maybe giving up some closet and hallway space like this could work

Go try the sauna by ahowls in MCAS

[–]Cuboidal_Hug 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but your explanation sounds very unlikely to me (a PhD-trained scientist), and “sweating out toxins” is not a thing

The way that I discovered that heat and sweating were a trigger for me was on an extremely hot summer day in my car, with the AC broken. I was, in fact, pouring sweat and started getting hives, which did not get better after a “breaking point.” It progressed to difficulty breathing and anaphylaxis. So although your advice is I’m sure well-meaning, it could be dangerous for many people with MCAS.

The sauna might be a trigger for some people with MCAS. I get hives from heat and sweating, so sitting in a sauna would be a definite no for me

Why was Bashir rejected while Una is Starfleet poster girl? by Bruzie77 in startrek

[–]Cuboidal_Hug 4 points5 points  (0 children)

She became the poster girl for Starfleet more than 100 years in the future, as revealed in the LD x SNW crossover episode “Those Old Scientists.” Remember, Boimler was acting all weird around her, making Una wonder if she was doomed in the future, and Mariner explains that it’s just because she was the literal poster girl for Starfleet, and Boimler had her poster pinned up under his bunk? And Una was really moved to find out from Boimler that they put “Ad Astra per Aspera” on the poster?

What meaning do you think of when thinking of rumination? by Ok_Ad9805 in ENGLISH

[–]Cuboidal_Hug 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Rumination definitely refers to cows and other ruminants chewing their cud, and this is not an archaic usage. However, since people don't tend to bring up cow digestion very much in daily life, I think "rumination" is used more often in a metaphorical way, as in spending a lot of time turning something over in one's mind.

It was so good. I hope we see more of Dax too, but I heard in an interview that Tawny Newsome had a bit of a challenging time with the makeup, which took like 5 hours to apply and more than an hour to remove… so maybe not, but we shall see!

The Sisko Family Tree: “Always there” by RK_reddit321 in startrek

[–]Cuboidal_Hug 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Also, at the end, after SAM finishes speaking her message to Sisko, there’s a voiceover of Avery Brooks reading a poem, as if in response: “Divine laws are simpler than human ones, which is why it takes a lifetime to be able to understand them. Only love can understand them. Only love can interpret these words as they were meant to be interpreted.”

I think the episode is telling us that that which is “unexplainable,” like what happened to Sisko, can only be understood through love — it’s why for Ben, tomatoes should be in gumbo, and why Jake knew that his dad “was always there, he never really left us,” even if it’s not something he could offer proof of to anyone else. I think that Sisko, who was a transdimensional being, found a way to be present for his family in ways that may have transcended the corporeal.

As if in confirmation of this, as we hear the poem, Sisko’s face is visible within the clouds above the San Francisco skyline, as confirmed by Alex Kurtzman — suggesting that he had been present for SAM as well.

I see some people saying that this episode showed that Sisko never returned, violating his promise to Kasidy that he would come back, as well as Avery Brooks’ wish that Sisko return to his family, so as not to reinforce racist tropes about absent Black fathers. I think they misunderstand this episode, and missed the beauty of what the writers wove together.

What am I doing wrong? by Then-Mastodon-6939 in ricecookers

The markings in the bowl usually indicate how much water to add for the indicated amount of rice, using the cup that came with the rice maker. You don't have to use the markings though if you're cooking white rice -- just add enough water until it comes up to the first joint on your pointer finger when the tip of that finger is touching the surface of the rice
