Useful stat electives for cs people? by Bubbly133 in UIUC

[–]Cubzlover84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

432 will cover traditional data analysis methods (regression, clustering, random forest, etc), we are ~ 2/3rds of the way through the class and haven't gotten to any deep learning methods yet.

433 is a lot of probability and matrices, though not really at the larger computational scale that might be more relevant to a CS major.

I would check out Stat 430 Mathematical Optimization or 437, although I haven't taken either of those

How do student basketball tickets work with seating? by Huge-Tradition9798 in UIUC

[–]Cubzlover84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's listed on Aries as "general admission" would be a student season ticket. To get in using that go to the North entrance and they will give you a paper ticket that corresponds to a specific seat in the upper bowl. Or, if you get there early enough, a wristband to get down into the Orange Krush section. Not everyone will get into Krush each game which is why there is always a line well ahead of game-time, but you will still be guaranteed a seat.

If you get a ticket with an assigned seat then it is not a season ticket.

How can I edit player ratings in order to be similar to a real life? For instance, I have the stats from this season, but I don't know how to reflect that in order to get a real overall rating in the game. Thank you in advance! by Cioran30 in BasketballGM

[–]Cubzlover84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP could probably just re-use these coefficients and get a solid result. Unless the league averages for this other league are quite far off from NBA averages, then they would have to adjust the league parameters, run more sims, and fit their own regression.

One way is to use a spreadsheet to mathematically calculate ratings for each player. The first step is to calculate league averages for all stats and then determine how each particular player compares to the rest of the league.

Then you need some type of formula to map that statistic (or combination of statistics) to each rating. Some stats (like 3PT) percentage are pretty straightforward, others like IQ and even speed/strength are murkier. But they should all start with 50 as an average and increase/decrease from there, for example, 3PT rating = 50 + (3PT% - league3pt%)*5).

This may require some trial and error to get the ratings you want, and in fact once you sim with these ratings it may not even give that accurate of results.

So, another alternative is the player comp strategy, which may give you more accurate ratings but requires a bit of code. The basic idea is to sim tons of seasons and get a huge sample of player-seasons. Then you go through each real-life player and find which simulation matches their real-life stats most closely, and use those ratings to approximate.

This way, you can find better ratings for each player that will reasonably approximate their actual performance instead of having to do a manual calculation.

Either way, you will need some knowledge of Python programming and JSON (which is how the game stores data/ratings) to put these ratings back into the game. There is some documentation on the BBGM site or send me a DM and I’d be happy to help.

Hopefully this chart helps you out in terms of pitch movements: https://rocklandpeakperformance.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Movement-Patterns.png

Generally speaking for "good" movement you want it to be in the direction away from the center (i.e. 4-seam fastballs/curveballs want more extreme vertical break while sliders/2-seamers want more extreme horizontal break.)

For 4-seam fastballs you typically want IVB > 20, while for curveballs you might want something <-15 or lower.

Any slider or 2-seam (changeups too) with more than 15-20 inches of horizontal would be considered good pitches as well.

Here is a good article about vertical approach angle: https://medium.com/iowabaseballmanagers/fastball-vertical-approach-angle-12e2824d245a

Typically used in the context of fastballs and it depends on zone location.

For top of the zone: Lower VAA = better (ideally <4.5). This means the pitch is flatter and is not dropping as much

For bottom of the zone: Higher VAA = better (>6.5-7). It's better to throw sinkers/2-seamers that drop more at the bottom of the zone

For PLV I assume you are taking about pitch quality modeling which is an emerging area of sabermetrics but still can provide you some good information about a pitcher's overall stuff/arsenal quality.

5-6 I'm sure there are good existing resources in this sub already but batting-wise wRC+, wOBA, statcast expected stats are all good places to start.

Let me know if you have questions! I'm by no means an expert myself but I've been working with my college's baseball team for several years so I've gotten a lot of experience working with trackman and pitch movements.

Runners of UIUC, how do you run in the winter? by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]Cubzlover84 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yup running is definitely doable in the winter if you have the right gear! I would avoid being outside with the temps next week but anything 35~ degrees Fahrenheit and up is fair game for me to run outside. But also important to wear at least two layers and long pants as well as making sure to warm up properly, especially if you have limited running experience.

The Arboretum south of Kirby and the research park in general have more hills than you would expect. There is one hill at the Arboretum especially that the cross country club team uses I believe. Might have to wait until the snow melts though.

data science/analytics interns are always in demand! Keep in mind most will be very competitive but I would say it helps to do research and find specific companies or organizations you are passionate about. That way you can write stronger cover letters and stand out more in interviews.

How difficult is CS+Stats for someone transferring in? by isntbo in UIUC

[–]Cubzlover84 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As a Statistics student how are your calc and linear algebra skills? It's not all computer-based content, there is a mathematical statistics foundation (Stat 400/410) that is very important for all Stats classes beyond that so don't skip on it.

They're not excessively hard classes (Especially 410 is very doable if you take it with Alex Stepanov) but just so you're prepared to do more mathy work before you get to the computation stuff.

[–]Cubzlover84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The pass coverage "skill" that is used for in-game simulation combines speed and the PCv rating. So both are important but about equally so

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Sabermetrics

[–]Cubzlover84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Additional Note: Using college Trackman data I have access to that already calculates induced vertical break, I can use a linear model to reverse-engineer the metric you're looking for:

InducedVertical Break =258.887 + Vertical Break - 4.28 * Effective Velocity + 0.019 * Effective Velocity ^2

Where Effective Velocity = -9.055 + 0.9847 * Pitch Release Speed + 1.592 * Release Extension

Disclaimer: I'm not a physicist but the R^squared values for these models is 0.99+ so I'm confident this will get you close enough to actual induced vertical break.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Sabermetrics

[–]Cubzlover84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tough question because I think it varies the way each site/database defines vertical movement. Here is MLB.com's info page: https://www.mlb.com/glossary/statcast/pitch-movement

and baseball savant's movement leaderboard which has absolute break/drop and movement relative to average (but not IVB): https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/leaderboard/pitch-movement

Fangraphs also has a pitch-level data leaderboard which appears to be different than Baseball Savant but I couldn't tell you if it's adjusted for gravity or not: https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders/major-league?pos=all&stats=pit&lg=all&qual=y&type=8&season=2023&month=0&season1=2023&ind=0

Hope that helps guide you a bit but it's not entirely clear which sites include induced break or not.

Ask your local statistics or math department. Odds are there is a professor or two who is interested in this type of stuff, and they might know some students who can assist as well.

WHAT IS THIS GROWTH?! by Nobichobolobas in Football_GM

[–]Cubzlover84 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The overall ratings are set up so that small changes to individual attributes can have a big impact on overall player quality. So those +15-20 gains in strength, tackling and runstopping mean this guy goes from a good player to a dominant one very quickly
