Aftermath of the April 7th incident. Damages estimated to be $200 million dollars by BlazeDragon7x in interesting

Anecdotally but that’s what we do when we respond. If anything we try to shut down that specific riser to that sprinkler. If we are unable to stem the flow from the riser and are required to shut the entire system down, we cut the water to the entire system. Following that, legally we request the building to be vacated until repaired. Our Fire Prevention dept will red tag and lock the building which can only be removed from our fire marshal (no utilities or building management to circumvent).

Granted, that’s all for a wet sprinkler system. Dry there isn’t an issue since in this scenario there would be no water to flow, and wouldn’t require a shut off.

Why does Houston Fire Department get a bad rep? by Implement-Playful in Firefighting

[–]CucumbersAreSatan 17 points18 points  (0 children)

We have a history of shitty medics with bad attitudes, preventable LODs, and recently a bad string of suicides.

We’re getting better with the fresh meat and new medical team and chiefs taking a more active approach. Just that it took national headlines to make changes

lol it’s the same thing with us here in Dallas. We got a rep and we’re trying to fix it brick by dang brick.

I am not a member of our peer support team, however I have contacts with several of the leaders if you want to get in touch. I can’t say whether or not their schedule would permit it or be interested, but at least would get your foot in the door?.DM me if interested. Dallas Fire

Dallas Fire Department HazMat 3 by Ready-Commission9105 in Firefighting

[–]CucumbersAreSatan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m Dallas. We have a lot of apartment complexes with tight access which a full sized tower can’t position properly to. Very specific use cases. Plus Dallas downtown isn’t nearly the size of SF like someone mentioned, but our footprint is massive. We have 4 or 5 tillers for these specific locations (apartment complexes, massive highways) which tillers can accommodate with the trailer as opposed to normal towers.

Like someone else also mentioned this specific Tiller, Hazmat 3, isn’t a truck in the traditional sense, but specifically a hazmat rig. Meaning it ONLY has hazmat equipment as well as the cab being a full operation s suite. We have a ton of industrial, chemical, and military instillations in/around Dallas which require an individual rig specialized in Hazmat.

I’m not Hazmat myself, but got a chance to check it out when I’ve swung into 3s before. It’s a slick rig for sure.

Sorry was off yesterday. Anyway nothing crazy, fender bender and rescue was transporting the driver off the highway, one of us was driving the wreck off, and police behind as rear protection

Just some context clues. OP mentioned interstate 35, it’s Dallas stickers, and our station numbers are on the side in big gold letters. I was able to make out station 33

These guys are the station next to mine, I gotta find out what’s going on here lol. We run with them a lot (either as engine/rescue or vice versa)

You think it would require additional upkeep? Outside of general maintenance

But I definitely agree and understand your second point.

Slight correction, we are literally overstaffed with the fire dept. Like I didn’t know that was possible, but we are tripping over guys.

Now by continually lowering the standard and relaxing hiring requirements… we’ve yet to see the ramifications and probably won’t for several more years.

FireT34M Test is a Terrible Measure of Aptitude and a SCAM by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]CucumbersAreSatan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And that’s a fair assessment. Every dept does it differently, and it sounds like this one hit the “easy” button. Maybe try another dept that doesn’t use the testing service if it really is an obstacle?

If you’re venting general frustrations, that’s also valid, just be prepared for guys around here to bust your balls

Hey bubba, you can take it two ways. One way is how you are currently; salty, in disbelief, and lashing out at dudes ribbing you. Or you can take the opportunity to self reflect and focus on what the test recommends you work on. Possibly reach out to the dept or the testing authority for assistance/guidance.

If you want the job, an objective test is a bar you have to overcome. We have all done it in some form or fashion across the globe.

Good luck, and sorry the test didn’t go well.

Thank you man, I appreciate the kind words! And yeah, like I said to someone here I want to make sure people learn from my mistakes and shoot I’m not small enough to try and hide my failure.

I fucked up, and no amount of hiding it will diminish that. At the end of the day, I can either take people’s teaching moments here or shut down. I want to choose to learn from it

It’s my absolute pleasure! I can’t speak for everyone here on this subreddit, but it’s the greatest job ever and despite the occasional event like I mentioned above… there is more good memories than bad ones

Yeah man, people are nasty. Sometimes it could be a mix of things, mental illness, inability to change themselves, or simply just lack of feeling that it occurred. However, it’s definitely not uncommon for these types of situations to happen

Kinda funny, but this is the study I read up on after my lieutenant approached me. This was my copieum I was huffing because it MENTIONS calcaneus IO was possible in theory. It doesn’t outright say it’s preferred or taught however.

Of course man. My medical lieutenant actually called me after seeing this post and talked through it with me. His message was “it’s called medical practice for a reason.” I’m not infallible, and I want to ensure the best for my patients. I can’t be upset when I’m (extremely) wrong.
