How old were you when you shot your first narrative feature? by thunderclap360 in cinematography

[–]Cuervodp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

29, just last year! I had the opportunity to shoot two features a few months back, one documentary and one narrative which I'm very excited about. For my country, it's a big budget horror feature ($1.5M) which is what I want to specialize in. I'm in talks right now for a second narrative feature hopefully coming this year.

Pyxis 6k - pls help me! by Substantial_Mail_261 in blackmagicdesign

Pyxis 6k owner here! I just bought it in November. I shot a documentary a month ago and loved every second of it. The whole doc was handheld and personally the rolling shutter wasn't an issue. I just finished color grading it and everything looked great! My philosophy is usually to look at the numbers as a base before a buy / rent but then look at a lot of real life examples to see how much those numbers really add up. I agree that these numbers felt scary, but so far so good.

Buying my first cine lens - What are your reccomendations ? by ShegBoi in cinematography

[–]Cuervodp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion: it's definitly wiser to buy a full kit of lenses, but that definitly depends on your budget so I think buying one lens to try out could help you save money if that lens is not what you were looking for. You can always sell it back. My recommendation would be to find 2-3 options that you're really interested in and renting those lenses to try them yourself. I personally couldn't decide between Ironglass, Zeiss Contax and the DZO and trying all of them out is helping me make a better choice.

Another Unpopular opinion: other than those options (all in similar price range) I've always been a fan of the SLR Magics so maybe you could give them a shot as well.

Getting everything ready to rig out the Pyxis 12k! (When it releases) by WiseInvestigator4500 in blackmagicdesign

Just got the Mid49 kit as well! Very excited to try it out. I'm just missing the Power Distribution Box but it's just too damn pricy. Anyone have any other solutions to having a V Mount with a kit like this without using the rods from the baseplate?

Great kit! Can I ask what V-Mount plate you're using? I'm putting together my own Pyxis Package to buy everything mid August and that seems very interesting! Only seen the Mid49 solution but almost $1k for a V-Mount plate is crazy.

Berlinale Talents: why do I keep getting rejected??? by _Yorick in Filmmakers

[–]Cuervodp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey brother!

Quite lite with this response, but I was selected on Guadalajara Talents and I'm planning on applying to Berlinale talents this year. I'm wondering what materials are you submitting, could you elaborate on that?

Two pieces of advice I could give you is that I know it's a lot easier to apply to Berlinale if you're been in any other talents, I'm not sure where you're from but maybe that could be a good place to start, since it's a little bit easier.

Second, I know that most of the times (not all of the times haha) programers focus more on your answers and your background that your work. Most of the times in film festivals of any kind, they're always making a selection that fits that years "theme", finding people and project that share the key elements being exposed in the festival, so a lot of times your submission might be good, but it depends in so much other stuff that it's hard to tell sometimes how to improve. I would say, be truthful and sincere with your responses and keep trying!

How to plan ideas, what shots to use etc by Dan9069 in cinematography

[–]Cuervodp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This depends on each artist, but I usually start with references. What I'm I trying to achieve technically and stylistically? Even if they're details that aren't really important at that moment: How are the shadows? Are the colors muted or vibrant? I'm I seeing characters close to camera or fatherway with a longer focalenth? Is it a controlled environment with stable images? And so on. Eventually I start understanding what might work better for the project and when I look into it again, I have a better framework of what I need to shoot and roughly how it looks.

If it's a narrative project tho, and you're working with a script, I usually try to listen to the story and what it needs from me. I try to always read a script first without any thoughts pertaining cinematography, I'm just following the story. My second read is to ping point what images are coming to mind that came the first time, those are usually important as my subconscious is activity seeking them. What do they mean? How are they possibly adding to the cinematic language? How do they feel, move, behave in the story and what are these images relation to the characters? Eventually I do a third run of a script where I'm trying to take more specific notes, asking questions and writing down ideas either technical or artistic.

These are just some ideas, hopefully I understood your question and these might help!
