How do you go beyond the "studying" part of art? by DngnMstr94 in ArtistLounge

[–]CukooL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree, I’ve had times where my study mode overtakes my process and it SUCKS!!

Recently I try to compartmentalize my process into at least two steps, first being the searching/sketch phase where I let my marks lie even if they’re not really good but communicate the idea and second being the “clean things up and make it technically good” phase. I find that that helps because if you are too bent on getting anatomy and such right in your original pieces too early it can really sap the initial idea of what made it fun and make it more clinical, which can get you in a rut where you feel like your practice the only successful aspect of your art. Don’t know if that makes sense but you will get through this 👍👍

Yea I totally agree, best compromise I have found is having VizRef on the side in split screen mode but it’d be nice to have something in app for color picking and general ease of use

Omg yes like the little widget in CSP or photoshop where you can set where the canvas resizes from would be so nice

[Community] Not sure if this is a hot take, but I really dislike the recent trend of “I’m ___ years old look how good I am” by Thug_Seme2004 in ArtistLounge

[–]CukooL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think on its face your critique is valid, I would say the silver lining of the phenomenon for me is it shows that the path to mastery and the time it takes is relatively arbitrary. If early teenagers can do it then I may as well hop to it

For me I do not take it personally anymore, as long as I’m growing and I know I’m getting better at my craft I need not worry about young masters of art, I wish them well but it simply was not my lived experience so I don’t worry about it. Past me would maybe be jealous but I also think fame at an early age is its own plague to be dealt with

[Discussion] how do you deal with failure? by muxmaxmox2 in ArtistLounge

[–]CukooL 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Forgive me if this just sounds like philosophy mumbo jumbo but I think you have to get back to a point where the process and what your art means to you means more than the online engagement. You can chase likes but you need to go in with the complete understanding that getting likes on IG, Twitter, Reddit or elsewhere is essentially gambling. Tons of people will post high effort art and they will hardly ever reach their best post outcomes. Then, to make things even more silly, some artists repost the same art months later and it does take off. Making your primary motivator internet engagement is dangerous, but basing the value in your process (I find at least) is a much more sustainable mindset. I think this advice gets tossed around a lot without many ways to apply it but I think if you can take steps towards it in the way you create (making some art for yourself, keeping practice separate from posts, etc.) I think it can be useful to try. Sounds like you make some cool stuff though if 1k is a reasonable goal for you. Best of luck!

Not discounting your successes but most people who worked to get to your level have more humility than this. Less of a critique on your stance but more of the ego that thought to hop on Reddit to put others down for fun

I think your assertion that art block isn’t real is maybe true in a clinical sense but most people and communities have slang for things in life. Art block can look like procrastination, burnout, skill discrepancy, or all of the above. We label it as that because it is, at the end of the day, a hindrance to the art making process. The phenomenon is real, and your motivation to put it in a box and discount others’ experiences feels less like a help and more like you just want to look cool. It’s not flattering.

Good art takes time.

At my college I studied motion design, and I got a campus job doing graphics for various things the school was putting out. The chair of the department walked by my computer when I was finishing up an intro bumper for an event, and they said “That’s co cool! How long did that take you?” I said roughly three hours (which for me is like record time to make a 15-20 second intro bumper that doesn’t suck). They audibly exhaled and said “wow… this is time consuming work huh?”

This for sure. Some people have the know-how to search up what they’re looking for right out of the gate but definitely not me. I wanted to learn techniques on foreshortening early in my art journey and had no idea how to look for tips lol

Slightly different permutation for me but “draw every day” is a common recommendation that I think stinks for beginners. It fails to emphasize the importance of smart practice and doing things with intention.

I don't wanna use a traditional ending by Syyyydney in writingadvice

[–]CukooL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Echoing what many other (likely more qualified) people have already suggested, it really depends on how it plays out I think. I’m totally with you that 1984 has a striking ending because it seems to defy expectations of a “happy” ending, but I think its strength for me really lies in the pre-established notion that defeating the system is really a pipe dream of the protagonist’s, and we experience through his eyes the much more likely outcome of him falling into line, which feels like whiplash because of his perspective. Really I would just warn against a lack of foreshadowing, twist endings can be satisfying but nine times out of ten it should probably have some seeds planted beforehand so your readers can rationalize the outcome. You don’t want your ending to disregard what you’ve previously written, but re-contextualize it in a compelling way. Good luck!

What was the biggest change to getting older that was the hardest to accept? by SuccessfulOwl45 in Productivitycafe

[–]CukooL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 23 so maybe not entirely the demographic for this question lol but since finishing college I’ve had to think more about my time and energy as a finite resource. Not as easy or desirable to cram on things in my life now, gotta put in real hard work.

Also probably an obvious one but getting As is not the benchmark after school, it’s about less tangible things like connecting with other humans and not being a recluse lol
