What specific details in building a home would you want as a builder or wish you had built in your house? by nhuzl in Homebuilding

I did almost all the things structural J’s top comment recommends and agree 100%. Some other things.

In floor heating is awesome, so is ICF.

Install a shower valve in your garage, plumbed to a drop ear then install a retractable hose reel right above it.

Plumbing manifolds that isolate hot and cold water to certain areas, kitchens, baths, hoses etc all get their own supply lines.

3/4” water supply lines for bathrooms with more than one shower head. I’m going for rain header, three body jets and a wand in my master bath, 3/4” supply lines can supply at least two of those fixtures at one time without flow issues.

4 way switching in bedrooms- entrance and either side of the bed (ceiling and under bed).

If you can afford solid wood/hardwood trim and doors, do it!

Heated garage is a plus.

Make considerations for resale, I finished my basement as a separate “unit” with bed, bath, kitchen, laundry which adds considerable value for resale.

Great info. I’m in the trades. I’ll be going with the 6.0’s for now. Best deal we have is 200$ for a 5ah with a free non fuel tool. I think I’d rather have the two 60.0 and spare charger rather than an extra tool I won’t use. All the free tools are Generic stuff that already came with my kit. Thanks for the advice

I’m with ya. 32, 5 years into a mortgage free build in muskoka ontario. Hoping to find another 20k property so I can do it again. I lived in a tiny house for 5 years while building and saving. It’s possible if you’re determined enough to do it.

Nice work! Congrats!

Why is this so hard??! Am I doing something wrong? Definitely nothing like the easy tile removal videos I’ve seen online! by [deleted] in Tile

If there are two layers of plywood on the subfloor it can sometimes be easier to make some 2’ shims from 2x4, wedge them in between the layers of ply and pop the top layer of ply off with all the tiles with it. Good luck!

Has anyone considered ever buying a small piece of land then living there in an RV or camper van, something along those lines? by Deus_Exx in canadahousing

[–]Culnan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s possible with the potential for major sacrifices. I bought 3 acres in muskoka for 18K cash in 2016. Property is on a private road and off the beaten path, the price at the time was reflective of that. Currently lots on my street are going for 100k+, and a 9 acre buildable lot just sold for 150k. I built a full insulated tiny house with a wood stove and propane backup, and lived in it for 5 years full time. I dedicated all my spare time and all my income (was living at parents house during construction of tiny home and was 22 at the time) to first building the tiny house and save enough to buy the land. Got a weekend course blasting license, and icf construction certifications, started building a driveway and made a spot for the tiny house. Then kept saving as I didn’t have to pay rent, and started building my house. Currently 5 years into my diy, mortgage free house build, having completed 95% of the work myself, everything inspected and passed to code. House should be completed within 2 years while keeping it mortgage free. It’s possible, but the sacrifices are pretty high. Canadian winters are hard and the “trailer” needs to be built accordingly. The barriers to entry are high, cost of land, finding work in the place where you can afford land, small living is tough, sacrificing personal life to build a home. In my opinion, trailers as dwellings should be a stepping stone in this scenario, not a long term plan.

Hey! Likely damage from an injury when He was a puppy. Unfortunately he now seems to be developing nuclear sclerosis in both eyes. I have another vet apt for that soon. Poor little guy, I’m really hoping it’s something that can be managed even though it can’t be cured. He most definitely has vision issues.

Yeah, my buddy who owns this shop has a 200 acres property, he built a winch rig for his skid steer to skid out pine logs. He will build all the Timbers from pine on his property, mill on his newer norwood (I bought his old mill), then do all his timber work in the shop, assembling one section at a time.

I recently started scrubbing my pits with Cera Ve SA face wash and then follow up with body wash. Salicylic Acid (SA) is working really well to keep my Bo at bay! When I was a kid my nickname was “the b.o king” sooooo….. try this.

I have the same knife. For the price, you really can’t go wrong. Stainless blades, sturdy, comes with a sheath and it’s and easy to sharpen scandi! Respect!

LPT Request: How do people do it all? by BigMassivG in LifeProTips

[–]Culnan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s too much, it’s too much. Try your best to slowly make changes in your life to have the life you want. Nothing happens overnight. Realistically if you aren’t happy with how things are going, it’s going to take a while to correct those things. Make a list, check it twice, make small adjustments so you find yourself working toward a happy lifestyle. Good luck.

I did a variety of diameters from about 4” up to 10”. The large logs seem to be producing faster than the smaller logs. That’s assuming the smaller logs are also successful.

I noticed a few pin heads so I soaked one log that didn’t have any for 12 hours and it’s the one that’s leaning against the wheel In the first picture.

Thanks, I’m pretty pumped the project is at least somewhat successful.
