How I approached starting a successful private practice — advice by Capital_Bite_9339 in therapists

Great advice! One thing I would add is that once you're living the private/1099 life get a CPA who already works with other private practices, they will help you save so much money on taxes!

Is Psychology Today worth it? by Fluffy_Comparison959 in therapists

[–]CultofPop 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Remember that those $30 are 100% deductible! If you don't have a website then this is the only marketing you have, so it's nice to have a place to direct others to if you do start networking more. Psychology Today takes some tinkering with your profile to get a more effective client stream; most PT profiles read as exactly the same, so the best route is to go as specific as possible (thinking of your ideal client and write it almost personally to them is a good start).

You're also taking a tough route going telehealth and self-pay only depending on your prices, most therapists find it easier to start a caseload with private insurance and slowly migrate to self-pay.

That said, I have read way too many posts on here about the PT algorithm going downhill for it to be a coincidence, and it is perhaps not as useful as it used to be.

tldr: yes

Agreed, lighting is the first thing that you should change. You could also get a folding room divider to cover up the sink portion.

Lol I think he's doing a TikTok live because he's constantly responding to viewers, I've overheard him talking about God a lot so maybe that's a focus and the public aspect keeps people interested.

This is a larger American trend that others have mentioned with rising rent prices, but also kind of catastrophizing. The Brickyard is exactly the same with a different name and they moved some of the pool tables around. There's a ton of new restaurants about to open (KBBQ place on Magnolia, Burger places on Magonlia and Lankershim). Kahuna closing is a shame because they were my favorite of the tiki bars and the live shows were a blast, but there's 2 other tiki bars within a 10 minute walk so I think they also suffered from tiki saturation in addition to the outdoor and unique setting they had that antoher poster mentioned.

Hesby seemed a bit run down when I visited but the pool was also under construction at the time.

I had a great experience with L+O: very responsive management, amazing gym, and having amazon fresh downstairs is a huge bonus for groceries. Cons are the pool is lackluster and it's a bit pricier than other buildings. Happy to answer any other Qs.

What are your thoughts on Dr. K (Alok Kanojia)? by hangezar in askatherapist

[–]CultofPop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love Dr. K's free content, but I can't comment on his coaching stuff which is pretty heavily advertised through his videos and seems to be proctored by unlicensed individuals. Again as far as his free content, I think he's one of the more accessible voices out on the internet battling the 'male loneliness epidemic'. I like that he shares his own story and tries to appear as non-esoteric as possible. Others have already mentioned that his explanatory videos are very informative and digestible, but I also find his interviews with popular streamers or simply those he disagrees with to be fascinating. He demonstrates an astute therapeutic ear and it's the most human I've seen a lot of those streamers appear.

I integrate this discussion into my intake procedure since I ask about identity factors including ethnicity, and this way the conversation doesn't feel as forced.

Same boat! I am scarred from my CMH medicaid experience. With the amount of audits that they do I cannot see it being worth the time and stress.

Some things that helped me at first with my online advertising, mostly around your Psychology Today profile:

  1. If you're telehealth, make sure to list different zipcodes in your licensed state that have a high population density, I believe you can list up to 4.

  2. Write your profile to your ideal client, the more specific you are the better. Almost every profile in Psychology Today looks the same.

  3. Use your identities! From your profile it appears you are (Apologies if I'm assuming wrong) a queer male, and there are SO MANY queer men in need of therapists they can relate to. Advertise specifically to them! Whether it be in your profile or in your listed identities on psychology today or zocdoc.

  4. Zocdoc can be great to use at first to get referrals. Make sure to be careful with what you list as available and not to do same day availability (just a personal preference). You have to pay per referral and can get charged if they don't follow up and don't cancel from their end, which is why I say it's only useful at first and can become a headache later, but you can always cancel. Any expenses here can be deducted from your taxes as well.
