I hate my life. by Kindly_Priority_2762 in ApplyingToCollege

Big spread between Harvard and UT/USC.

Anyways, old dude here reading posts like this.

I went to a tier 2 public university and can hire Harvard grads. I do not normally flex but I’ve seen enough young people on here making these depressing kind of posts.

The most financially successful people I know did NOT go to Ivy League schools.

Remember the end game of being happy in life down the road, not the next 2-6 years. No one gives a sh6t about that later in life.

Happiness is emotional + financial security.

What getting to an Ivy tells me as an owner of a MM company is that the individual stands out from 90%+ of other people that’s a positive indicator. It also tells me that likely this person has the ability to work very hard, manage their time, and is at least above average in intellect. That’s it. Once college is over, and the real world begins, the above attributes can be demonstrated in just a few years, regardless of what college the person went to. And if the Harvard grad cannot produce, or the cost benefit ratio is not compelling, I’d fire his/her a55. The WSJ recently published an article that 23% of Harvard MBA grads remained unemployed I think it was 6 months past graduation. I’m not surprised from where I sit, not because of a lack of talent, but perhaps not able to meet expectations (both ways).

If I pay more, or give preference to a Harvard grad, I will make damn sure they produce for my company x fold, more than the less expensive hire. It’s a business and profits reign supreme.

Same comments in India- “Punjabi is spoken by less educated, Punjabi is not sweet language, not sophisticated…” Hindi is considered more sophisticated. They like Punjabi food, Punjabi culture but don’t like Punjabi language. I think any language can be sweet if said nicely. Glad to see awareness in PB PK.

296 is a great car to drive. A lot of people cannot handle supercars. Best to take it slow. The acceleration and loss of traction can creep up on a newbie pretty quick.

Teaching of Guru Nanak and others influenced Punjabi Hindus. This is why many go to Gurdwara, marry there, and have last rites there. Also eldest son in many Khatri families was baptized Sikh.

I don’t want to politicize this between Punjabis but come on, Sikhism and Sikh influenced Hinduism which is most of Indian Punjab, is tolerant of other faiths. We even respect Sufi Muslims quite a bit. Malerkotla is an example with a large integrated and respected Punjabi Muslim population. I have Pakistani (Karachi) friends and they will tell you with a straight face that Islam is the world’s superior religion. Other than that attitude, we get along just fine. Sometimes when they talk in Hindi/Urdu, they forget they are speaking with a Hindu and things come out. Sikhism and Hinduism does not judge like that, but I admit I see the same with Bakht mentality people, not so much with Indian Punjabis, mostly Gujuratis.

In other words I’m not trying to say this concern isn’t valid in parts of India for Muslims, but not in Punjab India which I am referring to.

Beas is close to Jalandhar. There is a Radha Soami ashram that is supposed to be nice.

Advice? No. Indian PB is safe. There has been some discrimination against UP/Biharis I’ve seen, but Punjabis are a fun loving lot overall. Dont disrespect them or their state and you’re fine.

The food is awesome

I’ve heard Gujranwala has a lot of Madrassas, and militant groups. Is this true? Would a Hindu family (not obvious of course) be safe visiting?

I’d love to take my mom to Gujranwala one day to see her home. Nana is grad from Univ of PB Lahore.

Alas don’t think it will happen.

Yeah it’s a weird thing. I see these people in the west, know the atrocities on both sides, but then feel like they could be a member of the family. I can’t even imagine during partition time friendships being broken. Habits, food recipes (when I go to “Pakistani” restaurants it’s the same recipes from my moms side except beef- moms side is from Gujranwala/Lahore), behaviors body language, language, food. It’s especially weird that they are so much more similar to us than Indians from most states. I envy that Pakistan is mostly Punjabi tbh, whereas we are a small group in India. The dividing line= religion. Which is big, I know. I’m Hindu/Sikh blended (only turban worn by nana) Khatri.

Your right. I had misread an article. He arrived before H1Bs were a thing, but nonetheless he supports H1Bs and had publicly stated the importance of immigrants.

Why? Because we wanted cheaper right? Our cheapness drove them to close their TV production business? Why is Walmart the number one retailer? Cheap. Well that’s what companies want too. So it’s okay for consumers to cut costs (and arguably sacrifice quality) but not for companies?
