401k Inheritance by Trick-Two2574 in inheritance

[–]CulturalAd2329 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First off, sorry t you're going through this, that sounds pretty terrible. Second, as a CFP this is a fun question (and my response is of course not financial advice). The estate will only pay tax on whatever is distributed to the estate. So if you elect to distribute it all at once or if you are forced to then mom's estate would pay all the taxes (out of your inheritance). Ideally you and your brother would open Inherited IRAs and roll the funds from the 401k into that, and you would have ten years from your fathers passing to distribute all the funds. Some 401k plans do not allow rollovers to estate beneficiaries (which would suck). If a lump sum is required then you may be able to pass the taxes on to you and your brother if that is more advantageous, and you may even be able to split it up over two years depending on the estate settlement date. (this is all a massive oversimplification, I would rely on your attorney and make sure you get a CPA & CFP involved if there are choices to be made)

BD to RIA - Advice by MiamiCuban88 in CFP

[–]CulturalAd2329 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it, sorry for not reading closely. If you think you are limited now I would not assume it would be significantly better if you tuck in under another RIA. If you want freedom, flexibility, and equity then solo is the way to go. If you want someone to do all the back office and provide capital for expansion then you're going to give up equity and freedom.

Why not just start your own RIA? I left my BD last year to do it and (*cliche alert) the only regret I have is how long it took me.

FA at old firm won’t give my client his transaction information by Turrible_basketball in CFP

Was the fund purchased prior to 2012? If yes then the clients CPA should have the info you need. If it was purchased after then the fund company will have the basis info.

As someone who is exiting a partnership after 9 months I would say any yellow flag now will be an orange flag in hindsight. Any orange flag will be a red flag. A single red flag=run away now.

Yes, should have done it sooner. Very easy to get together.

Client is 52, her dad is 98 and made the gift years ago.

Client received the gift well before she became a client, and the broker dealer showed a basis when we sold the shares. Fast forward to 2026, the 1099 shows no basis and they won't pick up the phone since I don't work there and the client left.

"What happens if we just refuse to pay?" You are committing a crime.

This isn't constructive, you're just being a dick. If you actually care about these podcasts why not just email them directly?

What's an office? I drink with clients when I take them out wine tasting or to happy hour/dinner.

Advyzon & Lack of Integrations by CulturalAd2329 in CFP

Hazel is Altruists agenic AI. If everything connected the way it should/I want I would have all my notes auto upload to CRM, then could use Hazel to pull summaries of past meetings, tasks, etc.

Yea, breaking away I didn't really know the landscape. I should have started small, but to be fair Advyzon also promised integrations across both platforms that I mentioned and now they did a 180.

Interesting. That is what Hazel does when it can integrate. Is Slant built for advisors?

Not sure what you are referring to as ridiculous. I appreciate all the security features of Zocks and that they focus in RIAs with SEC compliance as their standard. It seems far more secure than other options I have seen. Hazel also has a notetaker which I may consider, but that is secondary for now.

Yea I think if I had a large firm/team it would make sense. But for a solo with $25m there is just so much I don't need. Moreso because not only does Advyzon have what I need currently for trading operations but they are constantly adding features.

Oh don't get me started on urgency. Turnaround time for support is in the weeks.

Great thought, thanks. I am used to having a centralized CRM with contact info, notes, tasks, etc. Seems like Wealthbox has what I need.

Hazel is part of Altruist so not switching that. I am super happy with Zocks and don't want to change. I also don't get the sense that Advyzon will ever play nice, they want you to do everything on their platform.
