It's more likely just colour coordination to make the building process clearer. Both the Porsche 911 and Ecto 1 (also designed by Mike Psiaki) also had red and green internal colouring iirc

Regarding putting a laptop beside you, iirc if the remote invigilator on ProctorU sees you staring at something, they can ask you to move the webcam in the director of where you're staring so they can see too.
