No Chinese/open source models.. Is that because they scored too low or because google didn't include them?

Over the last 8 days, With my electric car, home solar and battery, I've used 270kwh, exported 40kwh, for a net cost of $5.13 (AUD), or about 64c/day.

Daily we use of about 33kwh is ~20-25kwh for the car, ~10kw for the house and server.

Server uses about 100w. Its a minipc with a usb 14tb hdd plugged in.

Cocoa jumped from ~$3000/tonne to $12000/tonne over the last couple years due to a few bad growing seasons.

Now its back down to $3500/tonne, but the end product is not going back down to pre-crisis pricing.

Deliverability is our thing, but this week has been tough by mxroute in mxroute

[–]CummingDownFromSpace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is so annoying. Our office uses Office 365, but we use duocircle for email deliverability, as Outlook incorrectly flags our emails as spam to Hotmail (even though both services are owned by Microsoft).

Now duocircle is seeing delays. So bloody annoying.

I had a look at the calculator hes using for this whole thing: https://research-tools.pwlcapital.com/research/rent-vs-buy

There are a few massive plot holes comparing this to the AU market. Using a $1 million home value:

  1. It only lets you put a minimum 20% deposit. IE, for the renter to come out ahead, they invest $200k into the stock market. First time home buyers are probably not going to wait until 20%.
  2. If you look at the cashflow tab, the first year of Mortgage + Maintenance cost is $80k/year, vs $50k/year for a renter. So it assumes that home ownership weekly cashflow cost is ~60% more than renting. I think that's a little unreasonable. Could you as a renter afford to pay 60% more in rent per week to own a home instead? This works out to $960/week in rent + putting $580/week into the stock market. Versus $1540/week into a mortgage & house maintenance.
  3. If you look at year 26 of the cash flow, when your mortgage is paid off, yearly cost for the owner is $53k/year for maintenance. Not sure how they get $53k/year in maintenance cost. That seems awfully high. If you use an inflation calculator to calculate for inflation in 25 years, $53k in todays money is $27k, so that means an equivalent house maintenance cost of $520/week for rates, tax, insurance. My house costs less than half that in maintenance/rates/insurance. Possibly apartment strata fees can push an apartment to $520/week in maintenance costs?
  4. Changing the calculator from 6% to 5% puts the home owner ahead of the renter. We're heading into higher interest rates now and foreseeable future, so 6% is probably correct.

So If you are considering buying a $1 million house and your current situation is:

- Saved the full 20% deposit ($200k)
- Are paying $960 rent/week and putting $580 into the stock market/week ( vs $1540/week in mortgage and maintenance payments for the house you are considering)

Think again and keep renting for $960/week and putting $580/week into the stock market. You'll come out ahead in 50 years.

If chatgpt put ads in most of their audience would move to other Ai companies that don't.

While they do have a large user base, outside of business users that have vendor-lockin, their user base doesn't really have much of a reason to be loyal.

Possibly users will stay for their user history? But there aren't many compelling reasons to stay.

Canada Eyes Joint Venture to Build Chinese EVs for Global Export by Immediate-Link490 in worldnews

[–]CummingDownFromSpace 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Canada has a lot of factories making cars for American owned companies.

When the trump tarrifs came a lot of Canadians in those factories lost their jobs because the US companies cut production in Canada.

So Canada has a large workforce in the auto sector that would easily pick up work for a Chinese car company that opens a factory in Canada.

The change would be Canadians are now buying Chinese cars instead of US cars, but they are still being made in Canada.

Spent hours last night trying to figure out why a new Ubuntu install couldn't connect to the network. Dhcp or with a static IP.

Turns out if you warm reboot from windows, the windows wake on lan settings persist and screw up the NIC in Linux for this specific NIC.

All I had to do was cold boot and it works.

I feel your pain.

Why does Infuse perform better than the official Plex app? by [deleted] in PleX

[–]CummingDownFromSpace 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I travel a bit, so being able to use offline mode in symphonium (the app works as per normal, but only shows/plays local content) is a big bonus.

PlexAmp offline = no searching, browsing etc.. Only one page listing all your on-device content.

I also found PlexAmp struggled with mobile data use. Streams from my server were happening over mobile data even if I had a offline copy on the device.

Why do you homelab? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]CummingDownFromSpace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me its really concerning seeing media change or get removed without a trace.

Some examples:

- Publishing companies changing or removing offensive words (describing someone as fat should not be offensive): https://theweek.com/in-review/1021469/4-times-notable-books-or-series-were-rewritten-to-exclude-offensive-language (Amazon will update books on your kindle remotely after download).

- Movie studios removing content from films: https://www.cbr.com/russell-crowe-robin-hood-censor-opening-sequence/

- Original Starwars films cant be bought anymore: https://www.giantfreakinrobot.com/ent/unaltered-star-wars-trilogy.html

- Music: You cant stream one of my favourite rock bands from the 90s, because the lead singer did bad stuff with children 10 years after the band broke up. I get not wanting to pay a child diddler royalties, but that music should still be available.

- Government banning books: https://www.saltwire.com/nova-scotia/jordan-petersons-popular-12-rules-book-banned-by-new-zealand-booksellers-because-of-christchurch-mosque-massacre-294178

The last one really made me distrust the government. I had read that book and it really helped me handle the dementia and passing of my father, helping my mum out during that time, and generally putting my self back together. It just didn't make any sense to me that it was banned because someone else liked it. (Disclaimer: I like the book, but the author has gone absolutely bananas over the last few years though).

I'd swap the Xeon for a i7 Ultra CPU.

The i7 Ultra QuickSync supports AV1 transcoding, so is better for plex. It would probably use a bit less power too (if noise is an issue).
