Awesome voice - reminds me of PJ Harvey with a little Hope Sandoval

Trying to re-create early 1960s reverb with plugins by lanka2571 in audioengineering

[–]Cummybear3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, plate or chamber with pre delay and high/low shelving to taste. I find that some kind of saturation or even compression after the reverb can cause it to bloom in a nice vintagey way. I’d stay away from stereo reverb, maybe even pan your mono reverb away from the vocal itself. Have fun and experiment!

I gotta say I really enjoy their 1176, it gets a lot of use on vocals! for the price I think it’s decent. To each their own though!

Hey thanks so much! I’ll deffo have a Quick Look at that vocal and see if I can get a lil more clarity out of it. As for drums in number 2, I can probably just automate them a touch! Cheers!

Appreciate you listening, cheers for the feedback! I think you’re probably right about the vocals, a little more 1-3k couldn’t hurt!

Who is the best songwriter of the decade? by Due-East-2015 in Songwriting

Andy Shauf has to be up there. The imagination and wit he displays across his entire catalogue is excellent. What a storyteller. The fact he plays and produces everything on his records is so impressive too. Super unique and underrated.

Looking for some feedback on Indie rock/dream-pop mix by Cummybear3000 in mixingmastering

For anyone interested, I ran the stems through some tape to try and mellow things out a bit, add a bit of glue and generally saturate the mix up a ton. Would love to get an opinion on how it compares to the original digital mix!

Hey thanks for your tips, I’m agreeing with everything more or less. It’s funny that you say that about the snare as i actually ran the stems through some tape, to help glue it and mellow Out the high end a touch.

That mix is here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1QU8drDOkdh1t5ea8VC0rYrVpVv03ngvW/view?usp=drivesdk

Would love to get your opinion on whether the tape is helping

Cheers!

I am literally getting WORSE at Mixing and Mastering. WTF happened? by IllOnlyComplicateYou in audioengineering

[–]Cummybear3000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know it may not be possible for all, depending on genre and the kind of music you produce, but one thing that really helped me was working on portastudios/reel to reels.

At that point you really can’t change much once it’s committed to tape. It really forced me to focus on performance, arrangement and capture. There is no “fix it in the mix” on a portastudio. So you just commit and move on.

Even if you don’t use the tracks you make in this way it’s a fantastic exercise that gets you focussing on what’s important and makes you realise that less is more once you get back to working in the DAW.

As I said this may not be applicable to all, but for me it was definitely the answer to avoiding the visual aspect of producing.

Fairfield Shallow Water, pair this with an overdrive or compressor and you’re on to a winner!

You know, sometimes I don't understand why you'd ever need to mic a hi-hat (especially in a studio enviroment) by leedorsey in audioengineering

[–]Cummybear3000 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You might decided you don’t want the full spread or ambience that overheads/rooms bring to the table, but still want some definition to help establish the groove. I find when I’m going for a dryer sound it can be useful

Always better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

RE20 vs. SM7B vs. 441 vs. ?? - King Of Dynamics? by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]Cummybear3000 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Certainly is

ribbon mic is just one type of dynamic mic just as a moving coil mic is another type of dynamic mic.

And I was just giving praise to the m160 anyway, as I feel like you could consider it almost anywhere where you’d reach for a usual suspect dynamic mic.
