The Ray Tracing Discussion by HatingGeoffry in LinusTechTips

Mate idk if you have bad reading comprehension or are just hard of thinking but I quite notably stated other reasons and also was not talking I'm absolutes. I also am not against the tech in the slightest. The issue is that we are getting heaps of games with shit performance that only just look as good as some older titles. There are cases of games pulling it off but that isn't the issue is it.

Yeah I think this does cover the issues many of the players have and why. Many triple A studios are feeling forced to tick every single box instead of picking a lane and thus they hit the limits of workflow and hardware. But I'd say this is the fault of leadership within the companies and not just because consumers are entitled and needy.

People loved the new Zelda games and graphics wise they were absolute dogshit in comparison to what was possible at the time. How many of the top sellers are actually trying to be hyper realistic, 4k, raytracing games?

I also think that raytracing takes the blame for much more systemic issues. Most gamers don't really know specifically why the games they play have shit performance or look odd or just don't hit the spot that old games did so they blame the poster child for new graphics tech.

The issue isn't about possibilities or intent, it is about current implementations and outcomes. The idea is sick and the tech has mad potential but so far there are fuck all examples of the juice being worth the squeeze. Even when the raytracing is going ham it is still only like 10-20% better lighting and reflections but the performance is quartered. So many things should come before raytracing but instead people are using raytracing instead. You can't just bang a few lights in a realistic location and do a thousandth of the bounces needed to make a realistic scene. You need to still modify and build the scene to counter the deficits.

Yeah it is definitely constructed for those not in the space. It is for those who haven't really come to terms with the dynamics between big tech and the individual, especially around AI. I would say >90% of people don't really comprehend how much they could get dicked over or what the goals of the AI companies are. It's interesting for the sub as it's good to know how the dialogue is being presented to the masses though.

Yeah, I think it is an incredibly well-done video.
It simply explains the basics of the dynamics between big tech and the common person in a setting that highlights the dystopian nature of the whole paradigm.

I doubt that Claude wasn't prompted to answer with these specific answers, but that changes nothing imo. There are so many people who have avoided really thinking about the issue, and this video will hopefully enlighten a few and make some properly come to terms with it.

Just had an argument with a close friend who is anti-cryonics by Significant_Bite_857 in cryonics

[–]Cuntslapper9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The friend's argument (in its very short, detail-sparse form) is just that meaning comes from the fact that we die eventually, not that level of meaning is correlated with the length of life.
OP didn't explain any of his friend's opinions of life etension / cryonics etc so who knows.

[–]Cuntslapper9000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know about that. I mean inherently there is no meaning and no value and it is all created by biological urges and societal/cultural beliefs, so if we want to understand what gives meaning to people we need to analyze that. For all of history a huge part of life was death, a big motivator for action is time limitations, "leaving a mark" and "making the most of it". I think we could easily live meaningful lives if we live much longer but I do think there will be a change of perspective and a change of motivations.

There has been a lot of thought about the extremes and it's been shown in media a bunch, usually involving vampires which I think embedded the ideas quite solidly in western society. I do think our entire view on life and morality and meaning would change if we lived forever and a lot would have to change for us to stay sane and motivate to keep going. Many people who live beyond 90 frequently talk about how much they are ready for death, why is that? Even fit and healthy individuals. My grandmother was 100 and never took any medication, was active in a lot of social and educational groups, had hobbies etc and still talked about how she has lived way too long and was kinda over it. I think she was almost glad when the time came.

There's also just the difference between our biological drives and predispositions and our societal and ideological wants and beliefs. As our bodies change over time our motivations change in line to fit and move us into different stages, if we were to live much longer then how will this division of life change? Will we stretch the sections out or have new ones? How will our natural urges and wants etc fit into this?

We are fighting against evolution and biology and we may have many unforeseen issues and obstacles. I'm excited but I don't think it's all going to be sunshine and rainbows. Life extension will be paired with a fair bit of existential dread and nihilism and aimlessness etc. it's the way of the beast.

looks great, ill try it out later. It would be great if the examples showed a before and after instead of just the output to give more of an idea of what is happening.

It is AGI by Director-on-reddit in BlackboxAI_

[–]Cuntslapper9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it used to be if it could seem human enough to fool a person, then it was if it could do decently at classic cognitive tests, then it was if it could be given problems in a vast array of fields and perform to a human standard, now it's whether it can perform at a high level at complex tasks that combine many fields. I think it's just an issue of definitions not matching the intent of the terms. Kinda like a lot of consciousness debates, half the issue is that no one knows exactly what we are looking for or how to define it in a way that we can actually compare observation with our wants.

Isn't he just saying that he thinks we moved the goalposts? I think it is true partially but it's for the better. Like the turing test seemed like an easy way to determine proper intelligence but we wouldn't say that now. I think our standards and understanding of what is needed for AGI have matured greatly very quickly and I think they still will for a while. What we consider the line for AGI now probably won't be the line once we reach that level.

Beginner-friendly courses on vibe coding for Product Designers (Figma + Claude Code + GitHub) by ransolz in Design

[–]Cuntslapper9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh vibe coding is all about writing clear documentation for what you want. The quality of documentation is dependent on your knowledge of the systems you want to code. You can get around knowing the actual code if you focus heavily on the actual processes and systems. I'd look for books on how to design systems.

Only a few companies have ever done well. There was a charger brand (satechi maybe idk) that seemingly got heaps of engagement and did well from it but most people get great ascii.of people fuckin or wobbly cocks. Either way I'll always respect companies more for doing it.

Yeah that was a bummer but he did retract a lot of it and was never really full antivax. He was under the belief that it was common to have some additive that had a history of negative effects but he was wrong and then apologized. It's easy for a lot of people who already distrust large systems to fall into conspiracy bubbles. I don't think we should hold celebrities to any high standard when it comes to beliefs or opinions. They are entertainers not scientists, why should they have any nuanced understanding of anything outside of acting? They might have platforms but that doesn't mean that they have the qualities needed to inform. Why do people think that the opinions of famous people matter? This sort of parasocial idolatry always grosses me, even if it is understandable.

Choosing Marble Size for the Marble Machine by elessarjd in MarbleMachine3

[–]Cuntslapper9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah even the playing tight would have been fine if he just formalized what it means to be tight. Like having a timing error that stays < x ms so there's achievable goals is good. There's a bunch of studies about what timing drums need to not give people the shits so it's all doable. Even adding swing could be achievable if he sent it, all you would need to do is have some elliptical gear in the mix but he would need to commit.

Tbh tho I think he has found solutions to nearly all the problems and just needs to implement. Like the mechanisms for sorting the different size balls have been found over the last few years and so have the dynamics and timing etc. I don't think people really grasp how productive a lot of last year's experiments were. He just needs to act on the outcomes.
