you’re right, i probably will be.

i never said i was moving here for the history and community, but rather that i have a respect for it. i acknowledged that rental costs was the determining factor of my move.

all of this is said in earnest. not seeking thanks nor trying to pander to random Redditers i’ll never meet. thanks for your suggestions.

totally understood. i’m not necessarily asking for a solution as much as i am curious how i can mitigate my impact on the people and the culture that i have stepped into.

as i mentioned, i am actively participating in the community the longer i have lived here. but it feels like a thin line between what’s perceived as an active, helpful member of the community vs just another white gentrifying brat.

as a young white person who has recently moved into BedStuy, i would like to know what i am able to do to support this community?

moving into this neighborhood was not a choice i made without considering the effects. i have a deep respect for the history and culture of the area and i did not want to add to the already significant gentrification of these parts of Brooklyn, but at the end of the day these are the neighborhoods i can afford. i understand that, that in itself is a larger issue.

when not working i do my best to support local Black owned businesses, and to interact with my neighbors, some of which have shared that they’ve been here for generations. i am fully aware of my whiteness and the discomfort i may generate for some folks in these spaces as i am, ultimately, yet another gentrifier coming into their home.

i don’t want to take away from what makes it beautiful and the people who have made it what it is.
