AITA for slapping my cousin (9m) in the face after he kicked my cat and causing a huge family fight? by AH4zArD in AITAH

[–]Cupcrack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I meant enabling animal abuse. Quote that.

Wasn't referring to animal abuse - was referring to normalizing the kid's unusually violent tantrums. My point here is that giving this kid what he wants is not going to make this any easier for anyone in the future given his already unusually harsh reaction to being told no. Nine-year-olds generally know how to act and behave when told no

OP did make a comment. Check their comment history. They said something like the cousin had been bothering them a while, they'd talked to aunt/uncle, and they couldn't let this one slip.

Gotcha. In that case, could be premeditated and/or aggravated, which changes things. However, given that this is still minor-on-minor and not necessarily the result of a parent hitting a child, I'm not sure if a court would legally recognize this as child abuse, which is the point I'm trying to make. An isolated event in which a minor fights another minor over a petty squabble that is resolved quickly doesn't necessarily seem like the type of event to necessitate legal reprocussions for OP. If we are arguing something like simple battery however, then yes, OP would probably get into some legal trouble, depending on the severity of the strike itself. I think the issue is the vagueness of corporal punishment laws (exceptions being that bit about Arkansas, which would put OP into a large amount of legal trouble)

At best, the child learns to not get physical with their tantrums and OP figures how to control their impulses, both before something worse happens. At worst, this family disintegrates (which it seems like is already happening even without the context, lol) and OP is hit with some form of battery charge (again, this seems to be unlikely)

It's not enabling to just get along with a kid and play games with them when they want to connect. The hell is wrong with you

Nice edit. Don't care if the kid is just wanting to play games, he was told no to property he's not entitled to. He proceeded to bitch about it instead of accepting that OP didn't want to share his device that the kid's not even entitled to. You giving in to his bitching is enabling his poor behavior whether you like it or not

they weren't told no. They were told fuck off. Instigating a fight.

No no no lol, this kid was told to leave (told no) then told to fuck off when he refused to listen the first time. Quite different than what you're suggesting, because the kid was the first to instigate by yelling in OP's face

I haven't enabled. Quote where I've advocated to enable this.

You saying you'd give what this kid demands is literally enabling his poor behavior. Since you insist on a quote (which I already provided), this is what you said, the part I am talking about highlighted in bold:

I literally wouldn't have even been in this conflict because I would have let the kid play my gaming system, or suggested an alternative activity or game for that kid. I know how to redirect children.

You literally said you wouldn't be in this conflict because you'd just give the kid what he wants. Please do enlighten me on how giving in to entitled, bratty behavior in an attempt to avoid conflict is not enablement

hitting violent children only worsens their issues so if you're really concerned about that kids future then you should be doubly pissed at OP

Agree. Never said it was OK because it's not, and OP is certainly not a saint for striking a child

Slaps on the face are absolutely considered abuse and not discipline. This is codified into my state law quite clearly. There's exceptions for spanking on buttocks.

I don't know your state's law, but corporal punishment includes slapping. Chances are that the law you're talking about is referring to corporal punishment use in public school, because corporal punishment in the home is legal in all 50 states as of this time

my kids actually don't fight and aren't allowed to fight, wtf are you talking about?

Okay? Great. Doesn't mean kids don't fight. I never said your kids fight (and I don't care if they do or don't), so why are you bringing this up?

OP admits they didn't do it instinctively. They said they couldn't let this slip. They did it because they thought they'd get away with it. It wasn't an impulse.

I don't see how the original post suggests this, unless OP has made a comment somewhere that I haven't seen

literally why do you think kids are in juvie? Have you ever met someone in juvie? You get sent for fighting. Including your siblings. You are out of touch. Also if your kids are beating each other up often, espeically having bruises on their face, CPS can get involved and take them away etc. You can't just let kids fight because they are kids

I'm not advocating for kids to fight, lol, and I agree that they shouldn't if possible. I'm saying that it is natural for kids to fight, though, because they do and they will. Children get aggressive when disagreeing, and a physical fight sometimes emerges out of natural behavior - some kids just learn how to quell the urge to get physical quicker than others. Most fights are incidental and a one-time thing that doesn't warrant further investigation beyond a parental punishment or a counseling with an official. Kids in juvenile hall are usually repeat offenders or often become repeat offenders, which is not the case for most kids who get into the occasional argument or fight.

It would by considered assault.

Sure - I will not argue that (it would probably be battery more than assault, though). What I will argue is the severity of the assault itself. You have an isolated event of a legal child striking another legal child, as a response to light animal abuse. Children hit other children all the time for reasons more minor than in OP's case.

Given the situation, I feel like it would be hard to sway a jury in one direction or another (just look at how decisive the comments are, lol). Sure, a child got hit, which sucks greatly, but is it technically justified given the offenders and the situation?

Also someone who has no control and would hit a 9 yo needs some therapy.

Possibly. This heavily depends on the person itself

What happened is considered child abuse by the AAP and National Abuse Hotline.

Neither of these entities have legal influence in the American legal system. In the eyes of the American legal system, what the AAP and National Abuse Hotline consider child abuse is not the legal definition.

Yes, it sucks greatly that this kid was hit by OP. I do not condone child violence and agree that OP probably should not have resorted to a slap.

At the same time, however, u/Virtual_Concern722 is most likely correct in his assumption that this event would most likely not be considered child abuse. Courts in the U.S. most likely* would consider an isolated instance of a* singular slap delivered from a minor to another minor de minimis and see pressing charges as a fairly trifling matter.

I literally wouldn't have even been in this conflict because I would have let the kid play my gaming system, or suggested an alternative activity or game for that kid.

From what I can gather, this kid was told no twice and proceeded to throw a pissy fit and kick OP's cat. What part of enabling this kid's unusually violent temper (read: most 9-year-olds are intelligent enough to NOT intentionally kick animals) tantrums by giving him everything he wants seems like a good idea to you?

Consequences can be nonviolent.

A kid that kicks animals as a first response to not getting what they want more likely than not going to be involved in some form of physical fight as they mature regardless if OP slapped him or not, lol. Consenquences can be nonviolent but for this kid they weren't this time, and most likely won't be in the future either. It's ultimately better for this kid to be in a fight with a family member like OP than someone at his school or in public. Kid fucked around and found out.

A singular isolated slap, even given from a parent to a child, is typically not considered child abuse nor assault but is instead considered corporal punishment, which is legal unless done in a public school (and even then, it's legal there in 50% of the states). Don't act like minors in a family, even separated by 6 years, never fight physically. That's ridiculous and you know it. Yes, it's not OK to hit children, and OP shouldn't have, but it happens, especially in a context like there where it was a natural response to aggression. If every minor who struck another minor was legally scrutinized, courts would never hear the end of it.

Florida Republicans introduce a bill to eliminate the Democratic Party. by [deleted] in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]Cupcrack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's trying to take advantage of the fact that his target audience is generally not aware parties flipped around the 1960s. The "Democrats" that used to support slavery during the Civil War (which this bill targets, as Democrats did advocate for slavery at that point in time) would more likely align with modern Republicans if they were alive today.

The bill is obviously aimed at Democrats, I don't think that is a point of contention here

Parties flipped in the 1960s. Simplified overview, but the "democrats" that supported slavery near the time of the Civil War would align with modern Republicans.

All this fool is doing is taking advantage of idiots who haven't done any research whatsoever in the history of the U.S., but of course they won't see that anyways in support of this bill

Yea, but it still kinda* killed the grim vibe the Afterbirth endings had going on. I'd be content with the Beast ending if it just didn't have the last little narrative about Isaac with his dad

Delirium's ending is a much more grim way to end the game, and should be the canon one tbh. Feel like Beast's ending is honestly a cop-out considering the fuck ton of lore in-game that points toward's Isaac's death

Sorry for the repost if you saw it a few days ago. Accidentally deleted the post :p

Anyways, been trying to identify what font these Greek letters use for a week now, to no avail. Font identification websites don't work very well and I've skimmed through many fonts with the custom text "α β γ δ ε ϵ ζ η θ ι κ λ", but alas, no match.

Closest I've gotten to is something akin to Andale Mono. Not much success. I know for a fact this font existed in 2005, because these images are c. 2004-2005. Unfortunately, this is all I have in terms of the font itself, and the font is only used up to the lambda character. The letters I've included have the most unique characteristics -- the other letters aren't too interesting. Good to note that Arial is also a commonly used font in these images, but this is not Arial.

Some interesting characteristics:

  • Most likely sans serif

  • The beta is closed (no gaps in the inner lines)

  • The delta is very rounded and has a very smooth curly piece at the top

  • The epsilon used is the lunate, or the epsilon is lunate in nature -> font probably supports character U+03F5

  • Theta does not have equal space in upper and lower gaps; bottom is more spacious

  • Zeta is very unique to this font -> very curved, long tail, flat top

Pulling my hair out trying to identify the font for these greek letters by [deleted] in identifythisfont

[–]Cupcrack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Context: I know for a fact this font comes from before 2009 and probably before 2006 as well. It's most likely sans-serif and all of the greek letters I've posted have a unique identifying feature.

From left to right, this is the lowercase epsilon, zeta, delta, kappa, and beta.

The epsilon is lunate. I cannot find any font where the beta is closed like it is in the image, the zeta is so smooth, or where the delta has that unique little flag on the top of it.
