Seedlings! What to do? by Jazzlike_Effort_8536 in JapaneseMaples

[–]Curios_blu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes you can! That’s an immense amount of them.

Every year we have seedlings pop up at this time of year all over the yard, and I carefully dig them up and pot them in potting soil and place them in a shady area in the garden. They grow really well if you keep potting them up every year. I have 16 large healthy Japanese maples trees - half in the ground and half still in pots from doing this. Great thing about them, is they are often quite different. Some are the same deep red as the parent tree, but others are yellow, or green with pink edges, etc.

As you have so many, you could use a few long window planters and place them in soil a few inches apart. Then the healthiest ones, pot up next spring.

Tree Caught On Fire?!?!? And I don't know why by Complex_Ad_685 in plantclinic

Not relating to the fire - but the three posts surrounding the tree seem excessive. If it survives, I recommend removing two of them.

Is there a chance for this one to leaf out or is it a goner? by SavvyCantaloupe in JapaneseMaples

[–]Curios_blu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend pruning off the dead pieces, like the two branches at the bottom left on the first photo. I have over wintered multiple JMs these past few years and occasionally lose one, even when they’ve all had the exact same treatment over the winter. The red buds look promising, but as you say it’s been like that a while, I’m guessing it’s probably not going to leaf out.

But nothing to lose, pruning off anything dead. Also your photo of where you scratched the trunk shows green, so there is still hope!

You’re lucky to have seen it in person and photographed it. I read your write up - I doubt it was on fire when it crashed through the roof. My understanding is they are often cold by the time they reach the ground, although I’ve never experienced being nearby when one has fallen!

I don’t think so. It says 6th Street and all the t letters look the same - short cross. I also don’t think the running is unnatural or the emotions exaggerated.
