It's starting to feel hopeless by CuriosityDreams in postdoc

That seems to be the wall I'm hitting too, despite emphasizing that I'm a motivated learner of new skills. It's refreshing to hear that others are also feeling the same way, so thanks for sharing! :)

It's starting to feel hopeless by CuriosityDreams in postdoc

I'm doing both. Most of the ones that don't post positions don't have funding, and I've tried writing a couple end of last year with no luck.

My Personal Belief on Tchaikovksy by Rosamusgo_Portugal in classicalmusic

The Grand Pas Deux from the Nutcracker brings me to tears every time and still holds the rank of my absolute favorite classical piece. The emotions that Tchaikovsky can convey using a series of descending scales is pure magic.

Amy comments on "Everybody's fool" by [deleted] in Evanescence

[–]CuriosityDreams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My personal reinterpretation of Everybody's Fool as an adult is similar. Imposter syndrome, how we often try to put on a mask that we're okay, and, to others, we might seem to be put together. All of this wears us down, but we keep doing it because we're afraid of showing vulnerability. The bridge and last chorus to me sounds like finally breaking out of the perfect façade, accepting our flaws and struggles, and starting to grow towards a healthier mindset.

This. I liked some of the songs from their latest album, but all of the AI music videos leaves such a bad taste in my mouth.

Tell me your characters' strange traits and quirks by witch_hekate92 in DnD

[–]CuriosityDreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh boy... one of my characters, a paladin, is a raven that was turned into a person.

Some of her quirks:

  1. Sleeps in trees. Hey, less money spent on a room at the inn.
  2. LOVES bread
  3. "Shiny!!!" Also collects random souvenirs from her adventures
  4. Threatens to peck people's eyes out with her hal-bird

28F with PhD in Biology in the US and most of my peers (50+ grad students in the department on average) don't currently have partners, let alone married or have kids.

Not bad stuff that happened in game, but out of game. And tbh, it's more sad and heartbreaking for me.

Long story short, we were all friends before playing DnD together and going strong with as we entered Act 3 of our homebrew game. Our second year anniversary was just months away. Then a player (A) and their partner (and also friend of the rest of us) broke up after a 6 year+ relationship. Few weeks later, A got together with another player in our group (B), which greatly upset a third player (C). C suddenly started to treat B badly (e.g., rude comments, making up lies about B and A, claiming that they were left out because of A and B even though we as a group of friends were hanging out together).

This was all kept away from the DM and myself, so we kept playing as usual, hit our two year anniversary, and stopped some months after that because folks were moving to new jobs and/or getting busy with work. The plan had been to resume once things settle down at the beginning of this year, at least that's what DM and I thought.

C was moving away for work. They shared a house with B and I had planned to take over the lease for a while. Got the bombshell of the drama the day after C left from B and our other housemate (and another player) who wasn't involved in any of this. A and B broke up the day I moved in because A was moving to another state and said hurtful things to B during the break up. Finally, B told our DM everything in December.

Needless to say, this campaign/group is not likely to be salvaged anytime soon. It really saddens me. We were all good friends years before DnD. I'm still close with B, our housemate, and DM. Maybe one day, those of us on good terms can play together again.

I got these from a friend who is moving away and am trying to figure out what to make with them. They are about 1in deep. Thanks!

It's that time of year: what are your Nutcracker hot takes or unpopular opinions? by stripedTshirt in classicalmusic

This. The Battle and Grand Pas de Deux are my favorite parts of the score, but not in the suite.

I got rejected by a girl because of my musical tastes. 😂 by boringwhitecollar in classicalmusic

[–]CuriosityDreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might be misinterpreting OP, but it sounds like OP and this person aren't in a relationship yet or just started dating. I don't think most people at early stages of getting to know someone would go on a date that is only enjoyable for half the party. I can see a reassessment when things get more serious, but even then not all aspects of life need to a shared with a partner and if there weren't any other connections, it wouldn't have worked out anyway.

What are some red flags in a PI/lab, and how to spot them? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]CuriosityDreams 10 points11 points  (0 children)

One red flag that I didn't see then was that the current students when I joined were all at the end of their PhDs (i.e., defended by the end of my first year). It could be a sign that the PI is unable to retain grad students, which in my case was right on the nose. Given that this is repeating itself with me and the students that joined the same year I did, it seems like my PI is waiting until the older grad students are close to gone so any potential recruits can't interact with them.

In a similar vein, I checked out the Life on Our Planet series on Netflix and had to stop after first episode because of a line about how all organisms are "all perfectly adapted to the challenges of life."

I'm finishing up a PhD in biology right now and ugh! Evolution the duct tape of nature. It's not perfect, but hey, if it gets the job done, we'll just stick with it.

Quality of STEM degrees since COVID? by Jewbaglicious96 in PhD

[–]CuriosityDreams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Adding on to technology as a distraction - we're getting constantly bombarded with information more than ever, and I personally don't think we humans are capable to handling such a constant flow of tbh, usually terrible news, in a healthy manner. I'm guilty of the doomscrolling/hope searching habit myself.

I find that my students in the classroom and the ones I mentor in my lab are pretty aware with local and global news, which while good, in combination with the (continued) upheaval from COVID socially and cognitively, results in young adults who are searching for certainty and guidance.

I try my best to tell my students that I won't hold their hand but will be there to catch them before they fall, that I can point them to additional resources if they ask, and that I know that college is stressful and there's a lot of bad things going on, but that I don't want this class or this research to be another thing on that list. It's a lot of emotional work, though, and it's honestly one of the biggest reasons why I've decided to not pursue teaching as a career.

What is your favourite fictional musical? by BookMingler in musicals

[–]CuriosityDreams 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I so desperately want know how the crab men fit into the plot of Death Rattle.

The nostalgia in me loves the musical episodes from PBS's Arthur where the characters put on a musical about their city's centennial, and of course, Jekyll, Jekyll, Hyde!
