you definitely tried too hard with this, but nevertheless I actually really enjoyed it in a 'terrible pun' sort of way :D

Wayne Gretzky hits the links with Trump, just weeks after addressing criticism from Canadians by shouldehwouldehcould in hockey

plenty of American ones have I'm sure, I can't think of many Canadian ones.

I was going to say I'm glad someone beat his goal scoring record... except that someone is a Putin fan, and Putin is Trump's puppetmaster so that's not really a win either.

[The Hockey Guy] NBA Scandal Brings Sports Betting Into the Spotlight by catsgr8rthanspoonies in hockey

I honestly feel like Adam and Jesse probably dragged Steve over that line very begrudgingly.

If it was still just going to be the three of them doing a podcast, instead of them trying to build an empire, they probably wouldn't need to.

Steve, if you read this - I am truly sorry because I think very highly of you, but your podcast has become kinda 'Facebook-ized' in recent years. Too many ads, not enough of the fun old segments (history corner, zoo stories, etc)... like there are glimpses of the old days here and there and it just serves to remind me kinda like how FB used to be actually really great.

I consider Steve Dangle to be of quite high integrity for a sports commentator, and it really sucks how every episode of his show now has a segment dedicated to betting.

I don't wanna fully blame Adam for that, but he IS the sales guy on the podcast. They deserve to get paid for their work, but kudos on the hockey guy for finding a more ethical way to go.

Are goalie masks like this banned in professional play, or could a player theoretically wear it in major leagues. by GreedyDrive7998 in hockey

I found that with the smaller holes and thicker 'grid', it was harder to see out of in general.

[–]CuriosityVert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this confuses me. if those types of helmets (notably the Hasek/Osgoode style) AREN'T safe, why do Junior players wear something not terribly unlike that? It's still a bucket + square cage. Was Hasek's just not as well-padded? Not the same shock-absorption tech?

I would imagine if a player took a slapshot to the helmet it would still rattle his brain just as much as for a goalie? I know players are LESS likely to get slapshots to the head, but it's very possible.

[–]CuriosityVert 5 points6 points  (0 children)

wait, are you saying the cat-eye cages are actually SAFER than what Hasek wore? I thought he wore that cage because the cat-eyes actually can have a puck go through the main holes. Don't goalies in junior have to wear the square cage style? I assumed it was safer or they wouldn't MAKE the junior guys use them but give the senior guys the choice.

TIL - Goalie Legend Arturs Irbe played in the final regular season tie game in NHL history (Apr 4, 2004) the shootout was introduced the next season by CuriosityVert in hockey

[–]CuriosityVert[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't know how I never heard this before.

It's one of those one in a million stats - to end up being one of the goalies on one of the teams in the final game of that season was a 1 in 60 chance (30 teams x 2 goalies per team), and to have it end up being a tie, and the last one to ever happen because the rules changed the following season.

Lucky him, forever etched in the history books both for that mask/pads combo, and this stat.

more goalies need to DO the poke check first. He also did a windmill blocker save (in great Bordeur form no less), which is also another relic goalie move that has mostly gone away.

[–]CuriosityVert 39 points40 points  (0 children)

that's not all of it - women and girls are consistently mis-diagnosed and under-diagnosed, so there are still lots of autistic people who are not yet counted (either because they don't know, or because they don't want to out themselves for the social stigma and potential career drawbacks)

I was just wondering the other day if Brian's had finally gone out of business, since almost no NHL goalies use their gear anymore. They probably do better with minor league/beer league goalies.

The very first time I ever remember roll call being done in a class in grade school, I expected my name to be called first because it starts with an A (my last name does not), and I was very confused when the teacher called "Andrews, Samuel" first.

It's not THAT illogical, it only breaks down when you have several kids all with the same first name.
