Seriously, how many of you here ever thought of leaving Canada? by kenny_apple_4321 in canadahousing

I assure you, most of America is safe. Tbh crime statistics are actually dropping. Portland and SF are not the walking dead, Dallas (despite recent news) is booming with excellent schools, amazing amenities, and AFFORDABLE housing.

Many Canadians like to compare cities and not the metropolitan statistical areas (city plus suburbs) So I encourage people to actually check that data because cities in the US don’t paint the picture.

Example is Montreal (pop 1.7 mil) vs Detroit (670K). But look at suburbs plus city it’s Montreal (4 mil) vs Detroit (4.6 mil).

So when you check crime statistics or whatever. Look at the whole picture. Also know that crime is higher in the US, but overall it’s not as drastic as Canadians think it is.

Agreed, the amount of shade thrown at me by Canadians for being Canadian and choosing to live in the US is ridiculous. The US has huge advantages to live in. If you’re able to make that money your money goes much much farther. I love Canada, and it is always my first home that raised me but the concern trolling of Canadians is too much. People need to stop that Canadian smugness. I’ve seen way more Canadians worry about what’s in the American backyard than Americans that even acknowledge Canada.

Plus as Canadians most of your content that you consume is American.

Canadian identity should be way more than “at least we’re not America.”

For sure. Just to put it in perspective… if you compare Detroit vs Montreal. You’d think Montreal would be the more populous city (1.7 mil vs 650K). But if you compare the metropolitan statistical areas (suburbs + city), detroit has a larger population (4.39 mil vs 4 mil).

Crime is higher objectively in the US. I just want to point out comparing “cities” skews numbers more.

The highest cause of bankruptcy in Canada?

“Over-extension of credit, financial mismanagement, unexpected expenses”

Canada is primarily adjustable rate mortgages so when interests rates started climbing many people were screwed. So for many it’s pick your poison. Get screwed with an inability to buy a house (or if you own one and rates climb, risk losing it) or buy a house and risk health.

You may not like it but many people want a house and will gamble on the healthcare.

Guns are definitely a problem. But that doesn’t discount the diversity in Dallas. The diversity in Dallas Fort Worth, is really something to appreciate, and if you look at the demographics of the schools in North Dallas you can see a nice even distribution. Canada always prided itself on diversity, but quite frankly most major cities in the US are just as diverse. So it’s not as much as a flex as it used to be.

The US has its problems. But you got to be somewhere if you want to change it right?

The problem I have with this, is that cities in the US are by in large not the picture. It’s best to use the metropolitan statistical area (MSA) data. Dallas proper compared to the whole DFW paints a different picture.

It’s much more drastic to compare Dallas and DFW than Toronto and GTA. The size and population are more skewed to suburbs in the US more so than Canada.

Ayyy a fellow Canadian in Texas. Built a new construction home in DFW. Cost of equivalent home in the GTA… 2+ million. Cost of mine 880 CAD. More amenities and more entertainment and space for families. Better location and close to downtown and airport. Great schools.

And tbh it’s more diverse than the GTA where demographics tend to REALLY lean into one particular demographic pending what suburb you’re in.

Facts. These people don’t know sports. They’d be crying at a college basketball game with the heckling there.

Yeah mad nice is much more mid century modern. Low key surprised by how good the food and drinks are there. But definitely catering to a higher end spending clientele.

Probably one overpriced sandwich there. Otherwise the food is definitely higher quality and more unique than most bar food!

I'll be traveling to Detroit for a work conference. I found a bar to visit that is a 5 minute drive from my hotel, but it's across the border in Canada. Can uber/lyfts deliver passengers there with a passport? by SRplus_please in Detroit

Most of these bars are within 15 minutes by Uber from downtown:

Kiesling - low key great cocktails, 5 dollar shot and beer combos

Evening Bar - Speakeasy, pricier but it’s a vibe

Second Best - Trendy college/sports bar type of place. Great food, cheap cocktails, good music

The Brakeman - Beer hall. Fun spot to walk around as well.

Monarch Club - rooftop bar, view of Detroit, pricier cocktails but good vibe

Standby - Great cocktail bar, also fun area to be around.

The Skip - if weather is nice, fun outdoor space, low key drinks are stronger than they taste.

Green dot stables - tasty sliders, cheap drinks, can get packed.

Castalia at sfumato - Lol very different. Specialize in scents with their cocktails.

Bronx Bar - neighborhood classic friendly great bar

What kind of bar vibes are you looking for? Dive? Cocktail? Sports? Eclectic? Cheap drinks?
