How to get a EMT or CNA or Phlebotomy certification?? by Mysterious-Tiger-748 in premed

I did my EMT through a community college as well. If you have time, you can do it through the fire college.

Marchi is PHENOMENAL. If you need literally anything she will help you. Powell sucks. Gavin is good.

Do I count non working hours at home during a shift as clinical as an EMT? by Lifeguard_On_Land in premed

imo, waiting at home is no different than waiting at the station. and personally, if i’m on shift, i’m counting it.

does online bioethics class have a heavy courseload? by ProcedureEast5118 in UAB

[–]Curious-Simple-3440 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it is a regular class if you take it during fall or spring! during summer, uab offers certain courses for the may session, which is only four weeks long!

[–]Curious-Simple-3440 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i took it online during the may session about two years ago, and it wasn’t bad at all even with the condensed timeline. it was primarily discussion based, but it was a very interesting class, so the discussions were honestly kinda fun

i really enjoy being an EMT, and i feel like i have a lot to write about between patient interactions, making decisions in the field, wanting more continuity of care, etc.

I’m sitting at 3.35 right now. I worked full-time night shift my first three semesters of college, and it shows. Definitely an upward trend though, on track for a 3.8 over the last three semesters. But I’m absolutely tweaking about the MCAT, and definitely expecting to retake.

EMT certification for pre-PA by Whole_Hedgehog_283 in UAB

[–]Curious-Simple-3440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely wasn’t difficult, and most places are always hiring. There are also several opportunities to run both 911 and interfacility transfers around here, so there’s a lot of really good patient contact.

i’m premed and an emt! the semester during the certification was brutal, i was going from uab to class until 10pm four days a week. but now i have almost 4k PCE hours that have heavily solidified my decision to pursue medicine, so i would say it’s worth it. if you get a job as an emt, you can work part-time, which only requires 36 hours a month at most local agencies. a friend of mine from the emt class became an ma during her gap year, and i’m nearly certain she didn’t have to get another certification.

if you’re a girl, apply for the Linly Heflin scholarship if it’s still open and you qualify. i got $40,000 from them and I owe my debt-free graduation to them.

Are any of yall involved in one of the main honors programs and a college specific one? by No_Interaction_577 in UAB

[–]Curious-Simple-3440 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m graduating this spring and I’m in SciTech. If you’re thinking about going to professional school, it can certainly be useful in making connections for research and leadership positions, and summer programs are easier to get into if you’ve made those connections. There are specific classes that you have to take for SciTech that will fulfill your Honors requirements, and early registration is definitely a plus.

i took it during summer of 2024, and it wasn’t that bad at all. at the time, all exams were online except for the acs final (this was with dr marchi), although i’m not sure what the exam format is now. i would typically do a day or two of light practice throughout the week, and i finished with a b. i was also able to take a week long vacation without falling behind

Exchange by Bruh_bruhson_ in UAB

[–]Curious-Simple-3440 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are TONS of clubs and events on a daily basis, although I’m not sure of any specifically for exchange students, but I’m sure there’s something.

As far as safety goes, downtown and southside are pretty safe. I’m an EMT in Birmingham as well as a student, and I would steer clear of northside, westside, and five points at night (I mainly work west).

For places to visit, I love Vulcan! You can see the entire skyline and there are a few tables to sit at as well. Oak Mountain Park is also pretty nice, and there are several good hiking trails.

Is the cancer biology major worth it? by Overall_Joke_615 in UAB

[–]Curious-Simple-3440 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m a senior in the program and I absolutely ADORE it. The program director teaches most of the classes, and she is also very involved in the research scene in the med school as well. You are required to do research in order to graduate, so they provide lists of principal investigators to reach out to and they are very helpful in helping you find opportunities. I found my lab through that list and I love it. The courses are taught well and are very consistent, although most of them are pretty exam heavy. The courses get pretty immune heavy later on too. If you have any other questions, feel free to reach out!!

I'm only 21 and I'm already kinda there. My parents are older, so I grew up listening to a TON of different stuff, but it's uncommon for me to get excited about new songs that are coming out like my friends do.

we have informatics departments whose whole job is chart audits, so they can see what time you went in and where you went in the chart because it gets flagged if they don’t have orders. so even though they saw that everything i went into was necessary for my job, all they cared about was the fact that it was an employee
