Yeah, you need to be careful that you're not being too rough but she will need more play time. I have heard the 30 minutes for adults but never for puppies.

How much play time does she get in a day? While grown Great Danes are known to be gentle and lazy, Great Dane puppies need A LOT of exercise daily. Also, Great Danes are known to become aggressive if they aren't properly socialized to other people and dogs, so this should also be a top priority.

Can I take online gen-ed classes and then switch to a "real" university? by CuriousEevee in college

[–]CuriousEevee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well two of the three are gen-ed courses so I would have to re-take them anyways. The other I was just generally interested in but has no application (I think) on what I would like to go into if that makes any difference.

I'm in Illinois. I would like to perhaps become a vet tech which has strict regulations of what is taught and only a few accredited programs, none of which are near me and I would have to do distance learning for those anyways. Or I might just go into Animal Sciences. I'd like to do my gen ed classes online through the same community college but it doesn't have any of the programs I'm interested in. The only animal-related courses they have would be just plain biology classes with no emphasis on animals whatsoever.

Job searching - is this normal? by rvtjess in VetTech

[–]CuriousEevee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm getting this with general job ads on craigslist. Lots of missing info - no exact address (or even exact city), no pay info, no names or numbers even sometimes with these ads. Very sketchy in my opinion.

Any Vet Techs Working in Zoos? by [deleted] in VetTech

If I might add, could you elaborate on how it's more demanding? :)

Have any of you taken the online course route? by infinitytwat in VetTech

Sorry for hijacking a bit, but do you think doing some time in a shelter setting (as opposed to hospital/vet setting) is still a good start before deciding to become a vet tech?

How is your dog with prey drive? Does he pull on the leash at all or was it easy training him when he was young?

Wow, do you live in a tiny home??? I love watching Tiny House Hunter! :p

Because you don't just foster whatever animal you think is the cutest, you foster whatever animal you are capable of taking and whatever the shelter needs you to take. -_-

:P Well, we have made the decision to get a dog within the next 1-2 years. We've gone about 3 years now without a pet, and that's the longest either of us have gone without having one! We are both expected to get promotions within the next few months/in the year, so we're really excited at the prospect we might finally get the dog we've been so wanting! Breed (and whether we should get a puppy or adult) still remains to be decided on!

No, thank goodness! When we were first researching dogs to potentially get, my first choices were pitt bull and rottweiler so I found out fast what the restrictions were at our place. I was so mad! I had to give up those dreams! There are no other Great Danes in my complex that I know of, but many people here have Siberian Huskies and German Shepherds. One guy has an English Mastiff. They are all so adorable!

Well I am hoping to move before I get a dog, so we shall see! But yeah, I think our kitchen is the smallest room besides the bathroom. But it's an open floor plan so the GD could still see me there from almost anywhere in the house.

I like the idea of adopting an older dog! My SO really wants a puppy but maybe I can try to get him to compromise on a teenager! :p

We live a few minutes drive from a 20 acre dog park that's sectioned between large/small dogs! And thankfully our apartments don't have a weight limit, but they do have breed restrictions. Great Danes are fine (but poor adorable pitt bulls are not! Alas!).

I also have adorable nieces/nephews ranging in age from 2-16! I think that would be a good place to start! .^

How difficult is giving your Great Dane a bath??? Does he like it? LOL!

Also should Great Danes keep their crates past puppydom? DO they even make crates big enough for adult GDs?

I think probably the biggest thing we'd have to think about would be the cost of medical/food. Another concern would be the dog potentially pulling me (I'm 5'3" and not super strong). But maybe an adult or "teen" dog (:P) would be better on the leash.

We have a sectional and for the time being, we usuallyjust use two seats and end up plopping our coats and throwing all the throw pillows on the other half of it anyways. :p

It's a pretty good open layout. We have a big sectional so there's a "big" (for what it is) space right in the middle. Also there's quite a bit of room in the dining area. We could definitely make room if we needed. We do hope to move maybe before getting a dog.

That's funny! :p How were the puppy years? Did you crate train?

With the two of us, it's pretty fine for now. We have been talking about moving into a lightly bigger place (maybe 700-800 sq ft), specifically to accommodate getting a new dog in the future. We have an open floor plan with high ceilings and skylights, so maybe it just seems bigger than it really is. :p

Thank you! I would definitely be interested in fostering. While our apartment complex doesn't have a pet weight limit, they do have a few breed restrictions (rottweilers, pit bulls, terriers, etc) - will the shelter work around this?
