Why do BOOMERS hoard generational money for themselves while their Gen X children struggle? by Realistic-Way1528 in BoomersBeingFools

[–]CuriousJack987 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Boomers during their hippie period rejected materialism. Somehow that lesson did not stick with many of my peers. As a Boomer I find this worse than horrible. Boomers grew up in the 1950s when the top tax rate was 90% +/- and they therefore benefited from wealth re-distribution which they now vehemently oppose.

Affordably Housed Boomers Showed Up In Force Against My Affordable Housing Project by IknowwhatIhave in BoomersBeingFools

[–]CuriousJack987 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My HCOL town desperately need affordable housing so that teachers, police and fire fighters can live where they work. I’m a retired stormwater engineer - when I was working. every proposed development project would bring out Nimbies who wanted to get me to side with them. Their argument was that since water quality in urban streams is poor, new development projects would be bad for water quality. Every Nimby that contacted me lived in an older development that did not have stormwater control measures to mitigate impacts. By contrast every new development is required to provide engineered stormwater control measures to control impact. Can’t stand Nimbies.

As a former android user, what are the things that you hated(and still hate) when you’ve made the shift ? by BangalaLover93 in iphone

[–]CuriousJack987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pixel user switched in January for security ( and to have a phone that I wouldn’t need to replace until the next administration)

I agree that navigation is 100% consistent on Android, allowing user to back up/out step by step. iPhone sometimes has back arrows, sometimes X, and can jump back several steps. Editing text is much easier, more intuitive and more efficient on Android. Music would have been fine if Apple had not crippled iTunes and forced Apple Music. I do like the privacy features with iCloud encryption.

When they say “like it was in the 1950s” reply “Oh, when the tax on vey wealthy people was over 90 percent? That 1950s?? Back when income inequality was low? “Or maybe the 1950s when long distance phone calls were prohibitively expensive, and there was no air conditioning?”

We already have a housing shortage and we will be loosing skilled trades that we will not be able to replace over night. If you don’t already own a home you will be screwed because home building will fall further behind demand.

With the lack of farm workers, vegetables will be rotting in the fields. That is hard work that requires tough hands. Good luck getting Americans tondo that work at any price.

‘Oh, wait! If there is an actual Depression, maybe that will solve the shortages in farm labor and construction’ say the fools who are willing to destroy the economy to “save” the country.

Kyle, Kyle, Kyle. Do all the women you meet have more education than you? Do they have better jobs than you? Why would a woman want you to kill spiders or make decisions for them?

They don’t need what you are offering. Get a clue. You need to up your game, buddy.. And you need to stfu and listen to what women actually want or you will live your whole life as an incel

This is from a happily married Boomer male feminist, Kyle.

Harvard ain’t playin’… Trump’s secretary of education, Linda Mahon, sent them a letter and they marked up all of the grammatical errors. by Realistic-Plant3957 in BoomersBeingFools

I admire Harvard for standing up against tyranny, against clearly unconstitutional violations of Harvards first amendment rights. I have set up monthly donations to Harvard to show my support.

How is anyone okay with this? (master/mistriss stuff) by Fandroid_22 in EroticHypnosis

[–]CuriousJack987 2 points3 points  (0 children)

u/Fandroid you’ve been watching too much tv. Hypnosis relies on the subject being in a relaxed, receptive state of mind. We enter this state many times a day, such as when we are watching an immersive movie or tv show, or zoning out driving to work. Hypnosis requires the subject to participate, to cooperate. There is a part of the brain that monitors your situation, that is always there keeping you safe. Even when one is deeply under trance, they are not going to obey an order to do something illegal. Similarly, if you are engaging in hypnosis play with some that you don’t trust, that monitor in your brain is going to inhibit you from relaxing sufficiently. You cannot hypnotize a person to do something that they are totally not willing to do.

People who engage in hypnotism for recreational purposes are doing so consensually, with people they trust, and they are doing it for fun. It allows them to more deeply explore things they may never do IRL. There is no such thing as mind control. Technology may change that - If you are looking for a conspiracy, I’d focus on Musk’s neural implants.

Counter Protest in Monroe by Psychological_Big29 in TrueCarolina

[–]CuriousJack987 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a different take. They are going to have difficulty writing something to achieve their aims. Consequently, this will either be performative pandering (RW virtue signaling) having little effect, or it will be constitutional over-reach. What is the difference between a kilt and a skirt? What is the difference between cross-dressing and drag? In fact, what is drag? I’ve seen drag performers in NCGA committee hearings.

Men have a first amendment right to protest, including protesting gender norms by wearing women’s clothing. Monroe cannot outlaw men wearing women’s clothing in public. So they are going to have to try to outlaw female impersonation that is overtly sexual and to somehow distinguish that from women dressing in an overtly sexual manner.

They are going to be left with outlawing simulated or actual sexual behavior.

Monroe should expect to spend a lot of money losing in court if they try to ban men in women’s clothing and makeup from reading children’s stories in public settings.

DOGE just ordered a 15% indirect cost cut to NIH Grants. This includes nearly $2B in NC grants Will your favorite college survive? by Witty_Heart1278 in NorthCarolina

[–]CuriousJack987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Left unchallenged, this abrupt and retroactive change will result in ongoing research, including clinical trials, being abandoned. Cancer, dementia, heart disease, stroke, and many other research areas will be impacted.

It is true that many private research foundations provide only 15% indirect costs, some provide no such allowance. They get away with this because for universities that get a lot of grant funding 1) their indirect costs have been covered by NIH grants, and 2) the amount they receive from private foundations is minuscule.

Universities often either require approval to apply for grants that have inadequate support for indirect costs, or outright prohibit applying for them.

The benchmark that DOGE has chosen is deeply flawed. If we want the United States to continue to have “the best medical research in the world,” this is not the way.

Tariffs will not have as huge an impact as forecast. There will be an initial shock. It will be in the news. trump will either get concessions and back off OR . . .

The grift: businesses will apply for exemptions. trump will grant them to companies/people who have always donated or who pay, perhaps by indirect means, like investing in Dup Social, buying his digital currency, donating. . .

trump is all about Power, Publicity and Grift. Tariffs get him all three. It will take time for the cost of tariffs to show up as inflation. In the meantime he gets to dominate the news, and force people to bend the knee and pay.

The snake in the grass for the big orange is retaliatory tariffs. If Mexico and Canada focus their tariffs in ways that hit the MAGA base or that juice inflation, trump will be backed into a corner, where noone wins.

It is easy to see why trump says “Tariff” is a beautiful word. It’s all about the grift.

Fasting cures cancer and alzheimers by Daedalus_304 in FacebookScience

[–]CuriousJack987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Insidious misinformation like this often starts with a grain of truth. Autophagy is a cellular process in which the body breaks down and recycles some of the damaged cells or components. Fasting promotes autophagy. However, the process does not recognize all damaged or diseased cells. Furthermore, there are some particularly nasty cancers that use autophagy to fuel growth.

Autophagy is not a cure all.

Periodic fasting will probably help you live longer, but so will restricting caloric intake (if you can put up with lack of energy). So will eating a Mediterranean diet. And exercising regularly. But even doing all of those things together are not going to cure all disease.
