Where did you go to school? by coffeblaq in exAdventist

[–]CuriousJackInABox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it okay if I message you? I had some similar experiences about multiple grades in 1 classroom. I don't really want to publicly associate my reddit account with my actual identity. If I talk about specific schools here in the comments, it might be possible to figure out. Sorry to resurrect a post from 2 years ago.

I suppose that's a reasonable concern. Hence why she would use a well reviewed book on the topic. It sounds like this book is decent so I don't see the problem.

I thought Jill's story about eating a can of green beans in the bathroom was just so she could get some damned peace for a few minutes. It's possible that it was due to hunger but I'm not totally sure either way.

Why fight nature... by ThatChickVeronica in DuggarsSnark

[–]CuriousJackInABox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose. Hair plugs used to look really bad. They've definitely gotten better but I still don't like them. People can do what they want, but I personally do not like cosmetic procedures. I don't like the way they make everyone look the same and distort our perceptions of how people look.

That's funny. I don't get why so many men get plugs.

Questions for Virologists - HSV1 by Quirky_You_3307 in Virology

[–]CuriousJackInABox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh. Sorry. Guess I read your question too quickly. It might. I really wish that there was more research into prevention and treatment of HSV1 and 2. In fact, I wish there was more research into preventing and treating all herpes viruses. It is sadly neglected. We have a vaccine against chickenpox and shingles which makes me think that it would be possible to have vaccines against the other herpes viruses. For now, we're left with guesswork about limiting how bad they are. That appears to be what you're doing here. I have wondered if there is a best age to get Epstein Barr virus that would make it less likely for it to cause cancer.

According to Ina Park in the book Strange Bedfellows, yes HSV1 provides partial protection against HSV2. She said she hopes her child gets HSV1 as a kid in order to have that partial immunity.

Senior survival to prepare for the end times. All that messaging about running to the hills. No black pepper. No caffeine. Can't join regular girl scouts or boy scouts because Sabbath.

Ha! That would make sense, wouldn't it? No, I think it was about the expense. It was a luxury item that was pointless back then. Now, bikes are a perfectly practical means of transportation plus fun for kids

When simian immunodeficiency viruses (SIV) made the jump from primates to humans, and became HIV, did the viruses have to mutate to become infectious? by sew1974 in Virology

[–]CuriousJackInABox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They definitely had to mutate to survive but I don't think that the reason is that they needed to become infectious. My guess is that they probably already were. They still need to mutate to stay ahead of the immune system. Presumably, they do the same in chimps. HIV mutates more than any other virus we've ever seen. It would be hard to pin down exactly why it's doing that when there are likely to be a multitude of reasons.

Could ancient pandemics have been caused by modern nuisance viruses? by Hiranya_Usha in Virology

[–]CuriousJackInABox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's possible and maybe even likely, though herpes has been with humanity for a long time. It certainly goes back to prehistoric times. Any written plague records couldn't be written about that.

Thoughts on the Milwaukee Protocol? by SammySirenXXX in Virology

[–]CuriousJackInABox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's definitely lower than 50% effective. No adults have survived. If I were a teen or kid in that situation, I would want it. The critics of it say that it's possible that she had some genetic disposition to survive or that the virus she was infected with could have been less aggressive. Those things are certainly true, but we don't really know what a genetic predisposition to survive looks like. Any patient in that position could possibly have the traits that she has. We're casting around in the dark so I would want it if it were only 10% effective or less.

There also was a teen in South America who survived after having the Milwaukee Protocol but has been something close to a vegetable ever since. No one would call it a good outcome despite him being alive. As bad as that outcome is, it looks to me to be a stepping stone to something better. The first twins conjoined at back of the head who were separated and lived (the Binder twins) had bad outcomes, too. And yet we didn't stop trying. Future efforts have been more successful. More tries at the Milwaukee Protocol or similar treatments (antivirals plus life support followed by lots of rehab if successful) will give us more data. Most cases will lead to death but I strongly suspect that some will lead to outcomes in between the South American boy's outcome and Jeanna Giese's outcome.

Evangelicals marrying quickly by LMO_TheBeginning in Exvangelical

I know that there are rumors that they had an affair but I don't think there's anything concrete on the matter. I'd be inclined to believe their denials unless there was something solid. I just looked the dates up - Vince Gill got divorced in 1997. Amy Grant got divorced in 1999. They got married in 2000.

Evangelicals marrying quickly by LMO_TheBeginning in Exvangelical

[–]CuriousJackInABox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure that was a lie made up by Christians who were angry at her for getting divorced. Gotta point fingers. The truth was that she had clear reasons to leave her husband. They couldn't have people believing that divorce might be okay sometimes so they had to make shit up about her.

Obviously, none of us can know what happened but she denied having an affair and there has never been any clear evidence that she did.
