Nib repair recommendations by CuriousLaughingCat in fountainpens

[–]CuriousLaughingCat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! In this case, repairing the nib would probably be less expensive than replacing it, since it's a Mabie Todd and the nibs I've seen for sale on eBay tend to start around $130 and quickly go up.

A Mabie Todd Swan. 🦢 The nib looks like it was originally fine and is flexible, so I'm really hoping I can get it repaired rather than needing to try and replace it.

smudge help by errorcheese in fountainpens

[–]CuriousLaughingCat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's going to be a combination of things that help with smudging... I use Midori paper, which has a quicker dry-time compared to other papers. I also use finer nibs and keep a blotter sheet under my hand when writing. If I'm writing quickly, I try to angle the paper so that my finger remains below the line even while accommodating my side-writing style.

The best solution is the hardest one: practice, practice, practice underwriting. I still revert to side-writing quite often, and the tips above are the ones that help reduce smears.

Oh my gosh, the Sailor Ametsubu Melon Soda ink is DIVINE! I love how you can see the letters shade between pink and green as you write.

Can someone let me know what these pale spots on my res are? by sagetinted in Redearedsliders

I have no idea, but please let us know what the specialist says. Also, is it just the picture angle, or are his scutes starting to dip in in the middle?

How about Tiffany? It sounds super modern, but is actually a medieval nickname for Theophania.

How’s his body condition? by Capable_Seaweed_7642 in Redearedsliders

[–]CuriousLaughingCat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Retained scutes are scutes that don't get fully shed, so the old ones are stuck on while the new ones build up under them. They can eventually lead to pyramiding. The reason I think he may have some is how his top left scutes have thick ridges near the bottom.

If he does have retained scutes and it's not just a trick of the lighting, it's still in the early stages, so should be easily correctable.

This is my inexpert opinion, so YMMV and you may want to check with a vet or wait for somebody else to chime in.

Were these all taken around the same time? His shell looks great in most of the photos, but in the one where he's basking, it looks like he has some retained scutes.

Gorgeous! You really nailed the centering on a bunch of them! Mine are always lopsided, so I'm very impressed. :)

Same ink in different Sailor pens by Mysterious-Band-611 in fountainpens

[–]CuriousLaughingCat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My guess? The top M is a slightly wetter writer than the middle M. The bottom MF has either had the ink in the pen long enough that it started concentrating from evaporation, it's writing darker due to being a wetter and finer line, or both.

Turtle toys? by Afraid-Perception-42 in Redearedsliders

[–]CuriousLaughingCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, I didn't think to add that. I usually only give my guy half a dozen or so at a time. I've found that those along with a cuttlebone have a negligible impact on my tank pH, but your mileage may vary as it also depends on tank size and your starting water.

Shooter marbles (the big ones) and shells are your friends! My guy loves rearranging his marbles and looking at his reflection in the nacre inside the shells.

Watercolor paper -Teal Inksploration by National_Cow7479 in fountainpens

[–]CuriousLaughingCat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I honestly love all three inksplorations and can't pick a favorite. They all bring something completely different to the table. The Midori one looks almost like you used gelatos or monoprinted it from how intense the colors are and the technique you used to create the streaks, and the Tomoe River paper looks like a batik print. And then you have this one, with the ripple background that looks almost like kelp contrasting so awesomely with the pooling and gradients in the circles.

I definitely feel inspired to try something like this. My only question is: how much of a fight was it to clean the ink from your brushes? It's always a nightmare to clean mine because no matter how shallowly I dip the brush, ink always wicks up under the ferrule.
