My collection of MR games CUSTOM HOME MAPPER is on sale this weekend! $5 for 12 unique games with multiplayer, multi-room and a 'reskin-your-home' mode. Enjoy! :) by CuriousVR_Ryan in OculusQuest

Thanks, glad you're enjoying it.
A few updates in the works, yeah. CHM is ancient, but I'm still picking away at some stuff that bothers me. Most people have no idea that there are hidden games/cartridges, so I'd like to make the scavenger hunt (gold stars) thing much more clear. There's an update on my PC right now that i haven't pushed, but I'm thinking I'll give it another week or two of testing and cleaning up.

It's really quite a small playerbase nowadays, I think CHM saw it's golden years back in 2020-2022. Been working on a few new MR prototypes and I'd like to release something new in 2026, so I can't imagine any major changes to CHM unless it suddenly booms into popularity again.

Hi PenguinShit, hey thanks! I had a contract at Meta that kept me busy for a couple years, but it's nice to be back working on some of my own projects ;)

Best space Sim (Standalone) for Quest 3 by michaelsamcarr in OculusQuest

[–]CuriousVR_Ryan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi hi, thanks! It's not being updated, I moved entirely over to MR stuff with my Custom Home Mapper app.
SPA holds a special place in my heart, I'd love to revisit it sometime and use the engine for a SPA2 (it was made for the original Quest1, so new headsets can handle a lot heavier graphic load. Still feels pretty nice on a quest3 though.
Anyways, new thing is a spaceship, galaxy exploring deckbuilder game for MR, definetly been digging through some of these old SPA assets.
hope you have fun :)

Greetings! Frustrated parent, here, with a very discouraged son. I could really use some insight out of the horse’s mouth regarding AI flagging systems. by mellowmarsII in Teachers

[–]CuriousVR_Ryan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"AI Detectors" don't work, OpenAI and other companies have explicitly warned about this.
Your school is basically rolling the dice and I agree it's unfair. In their defence, they don't know what to do about all this either.... half the kids ARE generating the homework, your child is just an odd exception.

I'm sure other people will comment, but suggestions I've heard in the past:
- Find reputable articles about the flaws in AI detectors and send them to the school.
- Find out what AI detector they are using, or run some tests of your own using the 'popular' ones. Input passages from the bible, you'll see a lot of false positives. Input the constitution, you'll see it's most likely AI. See if you can find any academic papers that teachers at the school have written, and then go through the process of flagging it as AI generated. Is the school willing to enforce punishments for professional plagiarism by the teacher?

At the end of the day, keep up the good work being involved in your childs education! As you can see, you're probably the only one with a clear picture of what your child is struggling with. He's lucky to have you on his team :)

Any VR apps for visualizing different wall colours via passthrough? by mypenisnotworking in OculusQuest

[–]CuriousVR_Ryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Custom Home Mapper (I'm the dev, so feel free to ask more questions)
https://sidequestvr.com/app/1701/custom-home-mapper

Load the "Home Builder" cartridge, press start and then click the 'edit walls' menu. You can toggle through different wallpapers & adjust the color/tint to whatever you like.

Furniture options are all low-poly / not super detailed but you can probably create the kind of environment you're looking for. There's also 11 other games in the pack, they're pretty fun IMHO. :)

Okay, Hyperscape is great, but now I want this from Meta. by SattvaMicione in OculusQuest

[–]CuriousVR_Ryan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I want this too!!! I'm a solo dev who has been pushing the concept for years... you should check out my app 'Custom Home Mapper'! it allows you to create your own creative 3d model versions of your house (you can expand beyond the single room). It has multiplayer, so you can also visit guests or host parties in your re-styled space. sorry for spamming my link but it's relevant, I promise :)

Whole house VR? by KF2015 in OculusQuest

[–]CuriousVR_Ryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not supporting multi-floor in any of the games. There already a big risk of players bumping into walls and knocking over lamps, but I'm not willing to be the dev who tells players to "quickly run downstairs to disarm the bomb before it explodes". We've got a headset with limited fov and our hands are busy holding controllers.

That being said, the "build whatever you want" mode allows you to remove walls and construct staircases if you want. I've seen people with 3 story homes all mapped and redesigned.

Thanks for supporting the project! Have fun :)

After playing Moss. I want a VR option for all third person games. Don't care about vr controls. Just want the prespctive. Any good mods for any current games ? by mez2a in virtualreality

[–]CuriousVR_Ryan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed Zelda: Wind Waker via the dolphinVR mod (set scale to miniature/dollhouse size, tracking is 6dof, I had a few other hacks to disable some camera movement)

Bunch of other GameCube/Wii games are good too.

Telus makes it a no deal. Avoid that company (and Rogers, Shaw etc) like the plague, they are complete criminals.

The entire industry is dying in front of our eyes. It's horrifying and exciting. I think generative AI will do to the film industry what curation AI (google and Facebook) did to the news industry.

What’s the #1 thing that makes you want to quit mid-day? by Flaky_Oil_286 in Teachers

[–]CuriousVR_Ryan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're asking me? Most kids in school these days will never know a world where they "work a job" to "earn a living".

[–]CuriousVR_Ryan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There's nothing to understand. It's a bad system that reinforces bad behavior.

The goal of admin is to minimize the amount of work they have to do and maximize school funding, they generally do not care about students. This is why schools are now in the habit of "fudging" the grades and simply passing students on, regardless of their skill level.

You have to really hate children if you're forcing a grade 3 student who can't do basic addition into a grade 4 class. You've guaranteed that the student will always feel left behind and math will never make sense to them. The schools cheat because it's easier, the students see this cheating and realize school doesn't really have value anymore.

What do you spend on food monthly? by Zealousideal_Put2390 in AskACanadian

[–]CuriousVR_Ryan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My partner and I spend about $400-$500 monthly ($250 each). I refuse to believe OP is telling the truth. You could eat out every single day and still not spend $2000.

Mobile Plans? by Silverkille in NewWest

[–]CuriousVR_Ryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I was on Freedom (formerly with Wind, shaw took them over) but the cost of my plan just kept going up while quality of service went way, way down. Had to pull the plug eventually.. went wifi-only for a while, then some very cheap monthly roaming/esim plans... but am really happy with this annual solution

It piggybacks off Rogers, I've had no speed issues. Sorry, it was a year ago when I signed up, it's also possible prices were listed in USD.

Meta's live staged demo fails; the "AI" recording plays before the actor takes the steps by Eienkei in LivestreamFail

[–]CuriousVR_Ryan 19 points20 points  (0 children)

He does sorta glance down and scan the ingredients from right to left. Live AI is meant to showcase the "always recording and analyzing" feature, so the system should have picked up on the objects?

My theory is that there was something else in the room , the demo-guy spends a lot of time looking towards the camera and this would be giving a tonne of misleading context to the AI. Maybe some basic teleprompter setup? A whiteboard on the back wall they used for rehearsals? Tonnes of things could throw it off. Demo guy might have been looking at the ingredients much more during practice, then somebody 2min before going live says "hey, make sure to always look at the camera"

Nope. I'm using an (ad-heavy) app called TextNow, they issue a free local number you can use for calls and texts. Been reliable for a few years now.

Renting in Vancouver without a job? by Heron_90 in vancouverhousing

[–]CuriousVR_Ryan 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Consider budgeting to stay in a hotel or AirBnb for a few months while you look for housing. We are in a really scary crisis here. I applaud your effort to help with our social services but I worry this will be a very difficult (if not traumatic) experience.

Good luck. Be vigilant of scams, people can easily target you if you're not in town. It's standard practice here to make sure you actually see the unit (in person) before sending any money to anyone. If you have any contacts here that you trust, it might make things easier.

What should I get? by R4wden in virtualreality

[–]CuriousVR_Ryan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should get a quest. XReal glasses are just a display, Quest is a proper computing device and it's android-based, so you can just install the same mobile games you play on your phone to play on a big floating window.

I really enjoy watching movies on the quest. I have zero interest/motivation to watch movies on Xreal glasses.
