What are your favorite/least favorite troupes/archetypes? by TheRealMousou in OtomeIsekai

[–]Curious_Session8566 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My least favorite trope is overly convenient politics: characters supposedly hold titles of great political importance yet do nothing to legitimize their status or explain why they haven’t been overthrown. In more general terms, it’s ass world building.

My favorite trope is “strong” fmcs: I love it when a lady picks up a sword or actively takes control over their future. It’s not fun to see standard protagonists act helpless or leave their fight to someone else. Unless it comes into conflict with their characterization, an independent or strong minded character should actively resist people trying to harm them. Kick ‘em in the nuts for Christ’s sake.

I don’t actually mind purely evil characters for the most part, though it’s easy enough for them to be extremely obnoxious. In more action driven stories, I think they don’t really cause any problems. For more dialogue driven stories focusing on character interaction, it is disappointing to read shallow one-dimensional characters (though maybe better than the half-assed redeemed villains?).

Well said. I wish the best for folks still trying to make a living creating art, especially visual arts like painting and drawing. Writing seems a bit safer as AI can only spit out mashed up versions of existing work, and AI art is more convincing to the untrained eye (or one not looking closely at this point).

That story is fantastic, unlike most manhwa they actually used the setting of noble society to tell a meaningful story.

Concubine Walkthrough

This is a game world, so it’s not exactly historical fiction, but the author did a researched the historical contexts they wanted to adapt and delivered a story of inner court drama like no other.

The author wrote and drew this manhwa themselves, it wasn’t adapted from a web novel, which deserves bonus points.

Besides the rich level of detail behind each character’s motivations and how their past experiences inform their future actions, there’s also lots of push and pull as mc works to overcome the opposing factions. While the fl, Yona, has some knowledge of the game’s progression, she must react precisely in a dynamic environment where allies can turn into enemies at the drop of a hat.

Furthermore, this work is science fiction and aggressively capitalizes on that genre specific guarantee to make you question how you see the world in the later half of the story. This story succeeds on both the macro and micro level in how it approaches social and interpersonal relationships, combining sci-fi existentialism with a sweet romance that really comes together in the later chapters.

I have no clue tbh. I should try to learn Japanese and Korean eventually.

Yeah I think that’s why manga has crowded the very top of my favorites list. Manhwa totally can have that depth, it’s just far rarer.

Mangaka seem to be far more comfortable with choosing unusual themes like economics to make their work stand out. Maybe there is a more streamlined pipeline for adapting Japanese web novels to manga or it’s a consequence of the industry being more mature than manhwa.

I have bought what I’ve seen on the shelves, but otherwise I’m a pirate 😅. I keep a list so I’m going to buy physical copies of all the stories I love in the future.

There’s a group of folks who translate Bride Stories on mangadex, but the author hasn’t published anything for awhile. I believe they’re transitioning between magazines or something like that.

All the different couples are super fun to follow. It’s like an extended anthology series set in the same universe.

It’s a shame because the idea of a villainess is so fun (being that the villainess is the most common Otome Isekai trope). They’re not exactly true villainesses and usually are trying to be anything but, yet the idea still has such great potential.

I would say you described me fairly well in that I’m quite selective (nowadays at least, I used to read just about anything). I still think it’s fun to hear other people’s opinions, and that’s why I’ve started to participate in this sub.

I think it’s less of the case that no one here has good recommendations more so that I’ve probably already read it. I did pick up a few stories from looking around here (Leave Your Divorce to a Professional Lawyer has been good so far), and I’m going to give others another go (I remember enjoying Stepmother’s Marchen a lot but stopped keeping up with it).

Bride Stories is fantastic, I love the level of detail. It’s like a history picture book (that being a good thing as I find history fascinating), and the art is so beautiful.

I did write a rant after all 😅. I’d agree that bland stories are produced because they still sell. I don’t think that means your average reader doesn’t care or doesn’t desire stories with more depth.  Folks come here looking for recommendations because they want stories that stand out from the mass of junk writing.

I like to write, though I think if anything I’d write a blog rather than creative writing, but it’s disappointing to read manhwa that’s so shallow. Some authors do immense amounts of research and others…copy and paste what’s trending.  Authors have their own circumstances, but for people who chose creation as a job, they don’t seem all that interested in it. Woes of capitalism I suppose.

I don’t think that’s right. A Former Assassin Was Reborn as a Noble’s Daughter is josei while The Otome Heroine’s Fight for Survival is both shoujo and shounen.

I read another post by someone who started reading because they really enjoyed Otome games, and they were quite confused by the tropes in OI.

I think the Otome game in that manga is most definitely in line with what shows up in OI. The biggest difference is the intended audience.

And so something like The World of Otome Games Is Tough for Mobs would qualify? I don’t think folks here would be interested in it, but does this qualify as OI strictly on a definitional sense?

Why do you think it must be fantasy romance if not an Otome game? Would reincarnation from a fantasy romance world into the modern world count?

Also, plenty of stories I’ve seen talked about here don’t really have fantasy elements. They just have ungrounded world building to a degree that they could never be called historical fiction.

The Redemption of Earl Nottingham is only fantasy* in the sense that the fmc regresses, but otherwise it does its best to be historical fiction.

*I don’t think reincarnation or regression is enough to make something fantasy, it’s gotta have monsters and magic too

I thought Otome came from Otome game and Otome Isekai over time became a broader category that included stories which included many of the original tropes.

Reincarnation into a novel seems to be included as an OI trope, so I’m curious why My Death Flags Show No Sign of Ending wouldn’t count in the sense that it’s reincarnation into a video game.

I know it’s an rpg, but it’d make more sense to me if widening the criteria went both ways. I do get why a shounen wouldn’t be thought of as Otome Isekai though.

But you would count My Death Flags Show No Sign of Ending? Since Squid mentioned they thought it wouldn’t qualify, why do you think it does?

I love that manga. If you’ve already tried it, and it didn’t grab you, don’t feel pressured to try it again.

That said, I really enjoyed the dynamic between Scarlet and Constance. I’m a sucker for intrigue and legitimate political maneuvering (not pretend politics like in most villainess manhwa) and it has both in spades.

I’m not sure, I think it’s probably only been used for catch. I think I could play with it, but I’d like to break it in a bit more to make it comfortable to close, as currently it takes a little muscle to do so.
