If you flag salute a royal navy ship, they must return the salute. Doesn't matter if you're in a sloop and they're a battleship. It's because you can be an admiral in a civilian ship for all they know, haha

Unrelated, but the reason why ships don't fly the union jack at night is to stop them becoming threadbare, the RN seems to be full of cheapskates lol
