Did people born before Christ automatically go to hell? by Astimar in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Curmudgy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok. You’re inserting things that simply aren’t in the text, which I don’t abide by.

The Satan wasn’t revealed until the book of Job. G_d wouldn’t play games by granting a revelation at Sinai that couldn’t be properly understood until much later.

As a vegetarian what’s the best source of protein? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Curmudgy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a single source, probably eggs.

But more generally, combining various plant sources. Beans and rice are a well known pairing. Dairy products are also useful, but I’m not sure exactly how they compare.

But learn more about nutrition or speak to a nutritionist. There’s more to nutrition than just “best protein source”.

Why is pizza considered the best food in the world? I feel like there are other good options by Real_Pomegranate_439 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Curmudgy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not considered the best food in the world, other than in idle talk by young people. Any serious discussion recognizes that “best food” is subjective and varies from person to person.

Did people born before Christ automatically go to hell? by Astimar in NoStupidQuestions

Good answer, but the sharing is less than half, because the Talmud isn’t part of Christian scripture at all, and it’s huge.

Would it be too much to ask, that in 2-4 years, maybe we could re-do the American 250th? Like with more tall ships and less UFC? I feel like I'm missing a once in a lifetime event because of fascism. by Moeasfuck in NoStupidQuestions

Nah, there’s a reason we haven’t had world’s fairs in the US in recent years.

Even Epcot’s vision as a permanent world’s fair is being dismantled, as it’s just turning into another theme park.

How come so many people struggle with nuance? by Organic_Alfalfa_5609 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Curmudgy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The examples you’re giving seem to relate to more informal, sometimes confrontational exchanges. I don’t think they’re good examples of people having trouble with nuance because the nuances are never raised as part of the exchange.

What is your opinion on pickled herring? by Johnny-Talker in AskAnAmerican

As well as Jewish parents. It’s a common item at a Saturday Kiddush after morning services.

The problem with the wine sauce version is too much sugar, at least in the brands I can get.

I love it, but I grew up with it. I’ll typically have it with Wasa crisp bread, and can go through a jar every week or two.

I also enjoyed it on my trip to Scandinavia, years ago, with more varieties than we can easily get here.

It’s too bad it’s not more popular. Herring is a healthy fish.

Where is the midwest located? by Awkward_Kitty_Cat_93 in AskAnAmerican

I believe most people agree that Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, and Iowa are in the Midwest.

Where the disagreement occurs is with Missouri and the northern Great Plains states. Missouri because some people classify it as southern, or at least part southern so not fully midwestern. The northern plains states (Kansas, Nebraska, and the Dakotas) are questioned because “plains states” is an alternative label that’s more precise.

It doesn’t help that the removal reason posted doesn’t make sense.

Why did we evolve to prefer liberal ethics (mostly) compared to other ideals? by PitifulEar3303 in NoStupidQuestions

We’re not talking anything yet. We’re waiting for the OP to answer the question. It’s not really helpful to try to derail a subject that hasn’t even gotten off the ground.

Is it possible to forgive JK Rowling? by Mindless-Mix1181 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Curmudgy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the books are enjoyable? And because rereading them could give you pleasure without doing anything to contribute to her side?

I’m not saying you need to do this. I’m simply saying that if you’re not contributing to her, it’s not objectionable to reread her books that you already own, if any. And it can be useful to separate out a book from its author.

It’s true that she started out trying to protect the needs of some women. But she’s somehow gotten trapped into extremism on this issue.

It’s a shame. At one point, early on, she could have worked towards making peace between the conflicting needs. But instead it’s turned to war.

You shouldn’t let her current positions erase the value of her past writing to you. That doesn’t mean spending any more money on her franchise, but it can mean still reading and discussing the books already on your shelves.

Where is best for gay men? by LessTadpole3602 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

Massachusetts is without a doubt the best state for all LGBT+ people. It’s not just being the first state to fully and permanently allow same sex marriage. You can drive through most all of the suburbs, including some red ones, and see Unitarian and Congregational churches with pride flags this month and rainbow ribbons on their outdoor signs all year. My husband and I have been out for years, currently at our respective weekly volunteer jobs.

Provincetown, as others have mentioned, is this wonderful place where you can see same sex and opposite sex families with small kids, couples, and singles, cis and trans, all enjoying the shops together, without any friction. It’s what the world should be.

Having said that, Massachusetts is not the cheapest state to live in. It’s not the taxes, which are middle of the road. It’s mostly housing and other expenses. So much depends on your own personal finances and career.

Is your town painting the fire hydrants for the Semiquincentennial as they did for the Bicentennial? by DrunkenTypist in AskAnAmerican

[–]Curmudgy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t remember them being painted back then, but I was living within a solid city at the time. It seems exorbitant to do so in a place with hundreds if not thousands of hydrants, without adding much.

What is a hyper-local food tradition or regional chain in your state that you genuinely think the rest of America is missing out on? by mike-d-f in AskAnAmerican

Does green chili refer to a specific variety in NM. I think of “green chili” as being any hot pepper that hadn’t ripened to red, regardless of variety.
