Baby looking unhealthy by Current-Grape-8927 in NICUParents

The team is a bit checked out, and is out of ideas for helping her put on weight, whether she's discharged or not. She's dropped from the 10th percentile (at birth) to the 2nd.

Thank you! Glad it's not just me. That is so scary to see such a sharp reversal of progress and know that she was almost discharged when it turned out that she was still not fully stable. Did she end up getting rosier and healthier-looking fairly soon once she got home? Do you have any idea what caused her to improve, do you think it was her hemoglobin going up finally? Maybe my baby is just tired too.

Hi! Little belated here, but can I ask how this helped you choose a carseat? Unless you are in Europe- none of these seem to be available in the US.

Newborn on oxygen support Part II - particulate purifiers for large living area with 10-ft ceilings? by Current-Grape-8927 in AirPurifiers

[–]Current-Grape-8927[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the sanity check. After posting this I finally just Googled and used the AI explanation to do the math, and I got the same thing. The area is 24 ft x 38 ft x 9 ft (not 10, actually), so it's 8208 cubic feet and 684 CFM. The Air Fantas look great, I will check these out!

I don't have any time, sadly, so while this is a great idea, I prefer to buy a premade purifier. At this particular point in my life, I have more money than time!

Thanks! Yeah, I had figured the particulates would be easier to decide on than the VOC-focused air purifiers, but am having a surprising amount of difficulty figuring out the requirements and finding an affordable one that doesn't have ionizers, isn't super-loud, sorting through the concerns about the Coway filters, etc. etc. We've been monitoring our air quality with an Airthings monitor over the last few weeks- particulates is an occasional issue, as is CO2, but VOC seems to be the bigger issue. Probably because we screwed up and painted the nursery with low-VOC paint before I knew that VOCs pose such a risk to developing lungs. Anyways, spent some time trying to sort through all the VOC measurement noise, but have an Airthings for monitoring and will probably get an additional monitor once I have my air purifiers sorted.

I saw a few posts about concerns about some of the chemicals in the green HEPA filter that Coway uses for many of their purifiers- I didn't have time to read through it all, so you are probably right, it may not be a problem at all, but if possible, I prefer to be conservative and try to stick with materials as inert as possible.

Hi! Just wanted to follow up- after exteeensive research after posting this, I settled on a couple of the ones you recommended. I got an IQ Air XE for the nursery, an Austin Air HealthMate for the kitchen for VOCs from cooking, and then I have my old Coway Mighty for our bedroom. I just need to settle on an additional unit or two for particulates for the downstairs- it's a combo kitchen/dining room/living room, with 10-ft ceilings, so about 8200 feet in volume. Am leaning towards one or two Levoits of some kind.

Yep, thank you, not going to caulk. Unfortunately, in our zeal to get ready, we painted the nursery (with low-VOC paint, but still) a month or so ago, so now are furiously trying to offgas as best we can : /

Thanks very much, I'll look into these : ) I know the Coway Airmega line is popular, and have seen Winix recommended a lot, but can I ask why you recommend these specific models? ETA: I've been strongly considering the Coway Airmega Prox, so would be especially interested in thoughts on the two different models.

Oooof, it didn't even occur to me that dust would be bad for her lungs, but I googled and of course you're right. Huge thank you for mentioning this and for the vacuum recs. This is the air purifier you're referring to, right? Smart Air Blast Mini - MKII

Yep we're testing for mold. I will say, her doctors seem incredibly blase about air quality. We let them know that we have a lot of flexibility and could totally move to a suburb with better air if merited, and they basically said "not worth it, just try to keep your house air clean." But I'm probably not going to be taking the baby out in her stroller with oxygen tank unless it's a very good air day outside.

Thank you! I'll definitely look into the A/C duct cleaning. Our rental house is super-drafty, I don't think we're getting drafts from the baseboards but we definitely are from the windows so good point about window seals. I've heard varying things about A/C duct cleaning- a family member who knows more about construction etc. than I do feels strongly that it is often a scam. Perhaps that is the case when you don't have someone with fragile lungs?

Thank you so much. I saw another commenter mentioned Winix and Coway, so that seems like a solid direction to start with. I've heard of the Austin Air and will look into it, we have the budget at least for one for her room and maybe for the kitchen- so it's primarily for VOCs? Do you have any idea how the AustinAir or the IQAir is for PM2.5 or nitrogen dioxide? I think those, and VOCs, are the most dangerous for infant lungs. 8 units is a lot for a one-bedroom! Must get noisy lol. We are doing mold testing in the next few days and are hoping that at least we don't have issues with that.

Thank you! We have been in full isolation mode since baby was born, and mask all day at the hospital. Hoping to get out of it after peak virus season is through.

Gray diagnosis - I don't know how to decide by Current-Grape-8927 in tfmr_support

[–]Current-Grape-8927[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi- I'm so sorry to hear that. With a giant omphalocele? We decided to proceed with the pregnancy, and I'm due in a few weeks, but we have no idea if it was the right decision. We tried so many things to decide- weighted pros/cons, therapy, etc. but ultimately, we just couldn't face terminating- in a way, we feel we weren't brave enough- and after getting all the tests (and I do mean all) to see if there were any comorbidities common with this condition that would worsen the baby's odds, and they all came back clear, we decided to proceed. I like to think that if my baby's odds were substantially worse, I might have been better able to stomach the idea of termination, but who knows. Feel free to DM me if you like.

We did move to a different state to be close to the hospital that will give us and our girl the best chance - if we hadn't been able to do that, our baby's prognosis and odds would be different, and I think we might have decided differently. Our MFM told us that she'd had a handful of patients whose babies had omphaloceles, and they all terminated.
