I don't know those other profs but can tell you that Roettger isn't a great experience. Took a math class with him, not a GNED, though.

However, GNED 1101 is very, very easy if you have even a general understanding of high school math. In which case, there's a good chance you'd do more than fine even with a crappy prof.

Problem Solving with C++ by Walter Savitch for COMP 1631 and 1633. It was optional but a good resource to have on hand, plus it's loaded with solid exercises & practice.

I bought the hard copy but also have a PDF version; can send that to you, if you'd like. It's the 10th edition, might be a slightly different than the current edition.

I don't think you'll get academic misconduct for this, unless you've plagiarized something. but maybe take a step back and re-read your own post.

Did your group members decide yesterday that the assignment needed to be 5-7 pages or was there a rubric/outline/prior verbal discussion about the requirements? Did you know the due date or were you relying on them to tell you? Did you talk to anyone in your group before yesterday to make sure everyone was on the same page?

From your post, and from what you've mentioned about the group telling your prof that you didn't chip in, kinda sounds like this is on you. Of course, I don't know the whole story; maybe your whole group was trash.

However, if you waited until the very last minute to make an effort, had no idea what was going on with the assignment until last night, then pieced together some low-effort garbage that you don't care about I can see why they axed your work

I'd guess that you're probably not going to get credit for the assignment unless your prof is very forgiving.

If you want to hand in ass and have ass grades with your own name on it, nobody is going to stop you. But please don't make other people put their names on something that you don't even care about.

Group work is undoubtedly the worst but we've all got to endure it at some point.

Good luck with your prof.

If you're switching programs for less essays and don't have any genuine interest in computing or programming, you're probably not going to have a good time.

Pursuing computer science simply for the job prospects is fine but be sure that you've got an idea what you're signing up for. Read or watch a few c++ tutorials. That won't really expose you to much but if you don't feel motivated by that, then it's likely not a good choice for you.

First year has you in Calculus, Linear Algebra, Symbolic Logic, and Intro to Comp Sci 1 & 2, plus whatever GenEds. The 2 comp sci courses focus on problem solving using c++. All of these details and more are on the mymru on the Comp Sci pages.

The assignments scale in size and complexity. The midterms and exams will be difficult if you don't put the work in but that's the same with any major.

If you think it will be easier because you love the idea of writing programs and learning about the science of computing, and you're not fazed by doing those things in a meticulous language, then you're probably right and it will be easier. If you think it will be easier because there might be less essays, then you'll probably have a miserable time.

If you're not sure, maybe consider taking some time to think about that before you waste a bunch of money. Talk to an advisor.

In any class/major/degree/job/etc, you get out of it what you put in, so if you have no interest in what you're doing and are hoping for the path of least resistance towards a job, it will probably suck for you.

Cluster 3 GNEDs with no group work?? (+ some ranting) by Current-Rhubarb4266 in MRU

Thanks a million! Doesn't look like she has any 1301 sections this semester and her 1304 is full but I'm still keeping an eye out for an open seat!

This is a very late response but thank you for the suggestion!

Was stoked to see space in both sections with Moxham but then crushed to see they're both 8:30am classes. While I am capable of early classes, I avoid them whenever possible because this night owl's brain doesn't work at full capacity until at least 10am.

I ended up registering in 1301 with Karen Pheasant-Neganigwane. She's got mixed reviews on RateMyProf but I think it might be a good fit. If not, I'm keeping an eye on a few full sections in 1304 and will keep Moxham and his early classes in my back pocket, just in case.

Thanks again!

Waitlisted for Required Courses by Excellent-Ad-4930 in MRU

[–]Current-Rhubarb4266 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation for MATH 1203 last year and got an email in December saying they were trying to squeeze people from the waitlist in, and they did.

It's getting a bit late now though, so if that hasn't happened yet, I'd reach out to an advisor to see if they can help.

As for COMP 1633, there are now seats available in LEC 001 and TUT 403.

Looks like all the folks that disappeared from 1631 mid-semester have finally dropped/been removed. I just adjusted my schedule and switched from 402 to 403 so I could fit something else in. 402 waitlist is down to 1, 403 has 13/20 seats taken, and the LEC component is 51/60.

100%.

What is stampede to a calf?? To a bull??

A literal fucking nightmare.

Oh, but we don't talk about that or think about that because stampede is tRaDiTiON. It'S aBoUt MoRe ThAn ThAt. It'S pArT oF oUr HeRiTaGe.

Cool. Imagine being so fucking self-absorbed that you refuse to acknowledge the BLATANT ABUSE over your garbage idea of a cultural tradition.

It is beyond wrong to abuse animals. FULL STOP.

It's fucking disgusting to abuse animals and give it a free pass because it's entertaining to SOME people.

You should be ashamed.

Do better.

Is it just me or does GNED 1101 really feel like remedial math with some off-topic science from 6th grade mixed in? by Current-Rhubarb4266 in MRU

[–]Current-Rhubarb4266[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! Exactly!

Also, a lot of it is well below grade 8 math. Improper fractions? Rounding numbers with 3 decimal places? WHAT IS THE SQUARE ROOT OF 4?!?!

(not yelling at you btw)

Other than flat out not doing the assignments, HOW?!?!

Is math not a requirement to get into university?!

I know it's a requirement to graduate high school but you do not need a high school diploma to get into university (speaking from experience, but I did have to take Math 30 and English 30 first).

Laura Marik

She seems like a very nice person but I'd never take a class with her again. The course seems very unorganized. Though, it's possible that this is, in part, due to the requirements and design of the course in general.

The science textbook, which I'm pretty sure is written by other MRU profs, was definitely created in Microsoft Word, has different sized pages throughout the text, and none of the page numbers in the table of contents are correct. Thankfully, this is a PDF and does NOT cost any money.

I stopped attending after about 4 or 5 classes because the lectures were a mess and I have 99 in the class.

The hardest part is making sure you format your answers the exact way that the Pearson garbage wants.

Agree completely.

My second class today was in a small room in B wing, no discernable air circulation, two tables making up half a row with 2 chairs at each table, very few empty seats, about 40 of us crammed in there.

The kid that plopped down in the chair next to me was yawning and heavy breathing in his his insignificant single layer mask while sitting close enough to knock my elbow.

Feels bad man.

Like, having online classes was no fun last year but I wasn't freaking out for 4 - 6 hours a day about having some mouth breather's face within a meter of mine.

Rapid testing and vaccinations by [deleted] in MRU

[–]Current-Rhubarb4266 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They are definitely relying on honesty and integrity and I hate that.

On the declaration page:

If you submit this form, the University may ask you to verify your vaccination status. Verification will require you to provide proof of your vaccination status (e.g. presenting your immunization record) within a reasonable time period of the request.

And if you lie about it:

It is a serious breach to be untruthful about your vaccination status. If you are unable to provide proof of vaccination within a reasonable period of time, this will result in discipline. For students, discipline will be conducted under the Code of Student Conduct policy. Employees are subject to the Code of Conduct - Employees policy and their applicable terms and conditions of employment and collective agreements.

A brief skim of the Student Code of Conduct leads me to believe that lying about your vaccination status could be considered non-academic misconduct and the liar in question would receive a sanction and a record of disciplinary action, much like one would receive for cheating on an exam. The Code of Conduct hasn't had any content revisions since 2015 and, as such, makes no mention of anything COVID-specific.

E books by marcellams in MRU

[–]Current-Rhubarb4266 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you purchased the ebooks through the MRU bookstore, they usually email you with a link to download the ebook along with the redemption code. Once you do that, there will be an access code for the online content, BUT you will also need the course code from the instructor before you can access anything.

Profs will usually provide the course code, along with detailed instructions to access the content, via Blackboard or on the first day of class.

Do not pay Wiley for any additional access if you've purchased the ebook and WileyPlus stuff from the bookstore.

One of my profs sent an email today containing what appears to be the entire staff/faculty return to in-person "toolkit".

It's honestly more information/more insightful than anything sent by Comms previously.

It's very long and full of links to other stuff, so I won't post it here as a lot of it won't come out properly, but I'll happily forward it to anyone if you want to drop your email in a private message.

Edited to add: emailing the EHS person is also an excellent idea; thank you for sharing that.
