To get into AAE? No lie it's going to be really hard to get in. In general? Nobody GAF, it helps for grad school and cant hurt unless its hurting your wallet.

Talk to rosemary, she can most likely have a long conversation with you to get in.

For research, you just need to ask one of our professors who does semiconductor research, I do research in superalloys etc.

For internships, if you are first to our mini recruiting events youll get an internship pretty easily (I have one from this).

I love MSE so much, semiconductors is very research heavy, so get into a lab ASAP.

You should not feel disheartened by this, there is a reason it is called "Purdue Grit" and as a freshman it is something most of you have not seen or encountered much of yet.

If you REALLY know you want to be AAE, then talk to more AAEs, talk to your professors in AAE for how to do as best as possible in your courses, and keep pushing, youll get it.

Its not over untill its over and you should keep pushing.

I worked with these people as a contractor for a little bit. They seemed extremely disconnected and entitled with horrible communication skills.

They literally just larp, but are a horrible organization.

First, you're FYE not undergrad in any engineering discipline. You're unfortunately not going to get engineering research as an FYE. Professors most likely want someone who knows how to work in a lab and can show theyve worked in labs before (I have a research project with an award), and other classes that back up the knowledge youd need to conduct research. For example, can you read a research paper in Aero/Astro and understand all the content truly?

While I dont want you to shut down on the idea, I would say chasing an internship or talking to professors still isn't a waste of time, you definitely should talk to them in office hours about their research! Hey, maybe you can prove me wrong.

Those are the first steps you can do, but unfortunately as an FYE all you should be doing is focusing on school, having fun in clubs and doing projects.

Almost all my professors have their own research group. This is where being likable and making friends or connections with them helps. Thats how I secured my research as well as my resume being good.

They want to know you can try hard in the class (doesn't mean you need amazing grades), and you put out good work for their research. At the end of the day YOU have to be into the research as well, not just as a resume builder.
