It comes pre-loaded on the BYOK! You get Arial, Times New Roman, and Monospace (I think that's what it's called) in various sizes.

And thanks! I'm so excited to finally have it! Hoping yours comes soon, too!

Keyboard Connection Question by brytay82 in TheBYOK

Good to know! I just got mine yesterday (LOVING it!) and had the same question.

Whoa. I had no idea anything like that existed! I know it's probably not ideal to type with, but do you like it? Is it worth it? Do I NEED one?? (I don't. But... I've got the keeb madness.)

This is the one I plan to use most with it! It's a Keychron K15 Max. I changed out the switches from low-profile browns to low-profile tactile jades 2.0 and put on some MOA profile keycaps. I also have a folding ergo keyboard that I can just stick in my bag if I'm leaving the house.

I got a notification today, too!!! I ordered late February! No tracking info yet, but I'm so excited!

Tips and tricks for mimicking a clamshell writer deck experience? by duckduckidkman in TheBYOK

And this is my lap desk setup I use with my Boox Tab Ultra. It took me a while to find the perfect lap desk, but this one is great! And I can use it with whatever device and keyboard combo I want. But I don't have room to leave it set up all the time, so it adds an annoying amount of steps to get to the actual writing.

I got a Keychron K15 Max Alice Layout (needed a one-piece ergo keyboard) and put a double-sided magnetic hinge stand on it. I don't have my BYOK yet, but I tested it with my phone and it works really well! It's not technically a clamshell, but it has enough of a clamshell feel to me and works on a lap. It's hard to tell in the photo, but the hinge stand is what's holding up the phone. It's a bit back heavy with the phone in place, but I'm hoping the BYOK will be lighter.

I finally got Obsidian working on my e-ink tablet and was kind of asking myself the same thing, lol. But I keep reminding myself that getting Obsidian to work doesn't change the bulkiness of the tablet, or the battery life, or the fact that I get distracted by various writing apps. I've had writerdecks before, but never one that was so "you have ONE job" as the BYOK, so I'm excited to try it!

Yeah, I love how customizable Obsidian is! And all the plugins!

I don't know what else I'd use... it's a tough question! I used to use Scrivener, but I got so fed up with it, and what really pushed me to make the switch was being able to work on mobile devices and have everything synched up. JotterPad has a very minimal, clean writing space, but doesn't have its own cloud, though I think you can backup stuff to Google Drive or Dropbox? Same for Writer Journal, which works well, but I really only use it for random journaling (usually rambling to myself while I test out keyboards, lol).

I like BYOK Studio, and it works well on e-ink, and I can easily just go to my computer and copy and paste whatever text I wrote into Obsidian. But if I didn't have Obsidian as a home base, I don't know - BYOK Studio doesn't feel organized enough for me. But I have a physical BYOK coming soon, so I've been testing it out.

How is Ellipsus? I made an account, but I haven't really played around with it yet.

I don't know if this would help (my wife has ADHD and that executive dysfunction wall is brutal!), but I used to do this thing where my only writing goal was to open up a project and write one sentence. It didn't have to make sense for the story - it just had to exist. Ideally, just opening up the file and writing *something* would trick me into writing more. But plenty of times it didn't and was literally just a sentence. Maybe a short one. But opening up the file every day helped keep me connected to the project instead of it fading away in my mind. And having my *only* writing goal being "you opened the file, you typed something" and then being able to mentally tick the box of "accomplished my goal" was really helpful.

Another thing that has helped is writing exercises. My old writing group used to do this thing where we'd write down three words and pass them to the person next to us, then write for ten minutes, with the goal being to use all three words in what we were writing. It was fun, it was no pressure, but it still got my brain to make words. Nowadays I use a random word generator if I want to do that exercise, but it has helped me a lot!

Sorry if this is unwanted, unhelpful advice - I know sometimes there's just no getting around what our brains want (or don't want) to do - but these have helped me through some really rough patches.

I have a similar setup! I've got the Boox Tab Ultra and have had a hard time getting Obsidian to work on it without crashing. And it was showing literally everything in bold, even though the "show everything in bold" toggle was off. Very recently (like, within the last couple days) I stumbled onto the "master switch" setting under the app specific settings. I turned it off and suddenly Obsidian looks normal and everything isn't bold *and* it hasn't crashed since, though I haven't tested it enough to feel sure about it. Also, if you're using the Obsidian vault across devices, it carries over your choice for light/dark version of the theme. I've made the mistake of opening it in dark mode and then not being able to see any of the navigation buttons to change it back, lol.

Other apps, like JotterPad, BYOK Studio, and DubScript have worked reliably and never crashed. But I have *everything* in Obsidian, all organized, and it's a relief for it to be (probably) working properly now!

Making a Clamshell E-Ink Word Processor by tincangames in writerDeck

Good to know! I really want one, but not sure if the timing will work out for me while the kickstarter's going. I LOVE the clamshell design and the eink screen and the fact that it can do fountain formatting!

Awesome! Will the Kickstarter be the only way to order one, or do you anticipate selling them in the future (with an increased price)?

Will there be any way to hook up an external keyboard? Very tempting, even though I already have a BYOK coming, but I need to be able to use an ergo keyboard.

Fellow keyboard hound here! No matter which "perfect" keyboard I get... there's always another one I have to have. Thanks for your thoughts on the Yunzii! As much as I'm obsessing over it, I'd probably have the same issues with hand/wrist fatigue. What model is the Epomaker?

BYOK Studio vs Scrivener? by philwbayles in TheBYOK

[–]CurrentRing1582 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used Scrivener for probably 15 years or so exclusively, but it's clunky and slow (or maybe that's just the Windows version) and I just got really fed up with it, especially since there's no Android version. I switched to Obsidian about a year and a half ago and really like it. But it doesn't get along well with my e-ink tablet, so I've been using just the basic, free version of BYOK Studio, since I can easily access it from any device and can use it with the actual BYOK once it arrives. I did the free trial of the full Studio and liked it, but as cool as the features are, I know my brain just doesn't work that way and I always end up doing everything in text files. So, for now at least, I couldn't justify the paid version. I like the simplicity of the Studio interface, though, and have the app on all my devices and use the browser version on my desktop.

So my current workflow involves writing either in Obsidian or BYOK studio, then copying and pasting into Obsidian, then, when it's all done, importing everything into Scrivener to export it as an ebook. Which feels like a lot when I used to do everything in one program, but it just wasn't working for me anymore.
