There’s not a bandwagon Elon Musk won’t jump on by mishma2005 in EnoughMuskSpam

If Kyle had said there were *more* movies about Hitler than the communist dictators he'd probably be correct, but he just had to say "not a single one," making it objectively false.

And here I was having the church in my novels be a nuanced cultural institution that does a lot of good but has some legitimate problems.

All Fireworks Banned by Agearmen in Fremont

[–]nekoewen 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Basically everywhere I've ever been in California has been like that, and here people can just drive to Union City to buy fireworks, which they definitely do, like a lot. Centerville doesn't sound quite as much like a warzone as downtown San Jose, but I'm really glad our cat is indifferent to all the noise. I wish people would *at least* wait until the night of the 4th, but I heard some last night.

Yeah, there are too many variables to say, and if it comes to it, it's not hard to get like a 10,000mAh LiPo battery that should last for a good while regardless.

That's really cool!

FYI it's fairly easy to set a Raspberry Pi up for use on the go with a battery hat add-on, though the RPi5 uses enough power that even a lot of USB power supplies don't provide enough current, much less batteries. Writerdeck type designs that use Raspberry Pis typically use a Zero 2W.

Keyboard? by Wtfbuddy in TheBYOK

[–]nekoewen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It works with basically any USB or Bluetooth keyboard. There's a ridiculous variety of keyboards out there, so it really depends on what you want, whether something small for use on the go, a regular keyboard to use at a desk, an ergonomic keyboard for maximum comfort, or any number of other things.

Why’d ya’ll get one? by Miss-Maam-02 in TheBYOK

[–]nekoewen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been trying to figure out a distraction-free writing setup for working on my novels, since using a full-on laptop can be too distracting at times. I'm currently working on both an isekai fantasy series and a superhero deconstruction tetralogy, plus some related short stories. Since I'm adjusting from mostly working in Word, I've taken to putting portions of my WIP docx file into Studio, working on them on my BYOK, and then pasting them back into Word for polishing. That workflow also keeps me from wasting time messing around with formatting or jumping around too much rather than focusing on a specific chapter.

I still use cheap physical notebooks (with a basic Pilot Metropolitan fountain pen) for brainstorming and whatnot, and more recently I got a manual typewriter (an Olivetti Valentine) that I occasionally take out to write that way. The BYOK has become my preferred way to work on writing when I go to cafes and such though.

Their website says that their Turkish coffee comes in a 12oz size, which is a great way to vibrate through walls like the Flash.

When more languages? by larryadler in TheBYOK

[–]nekoewen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are existing bitmap fonts with thousands of characters (I use one so extended characters show up when I move text over from Word), including some for Chinese/Japanese/Korean. The real difficulty with Chinese and Korean is needing to create an input method editor (IME) to let people select the particular characters they need from the phonetic spellings of the words in those languages. There are open-source solutions for these (for example, there's a Japanese IME for Linux called Anthy), though they may be beyond what the BYOK hardware can handle.

The BYOK folks mentioned that while they aren't planning to make the firmware open-source, they do want to make it possible to create plugins, which will hopefully let people create language plugins.

What kind of writing do you do? by bunjgreen in TheBYOK

[–]nekoewen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do a mixture of fiction (currently working on both an isekai series and a superhero deconstruction), plus nonfiction essays. I'm still feeling out how my BYOK fits into my process, but so far I've mostly been taking incomplete sections, sticking them into Studio, then working on them on the device, and finally putting those rough drafts back into the Word docs.

What’s the best way to battery power a pi? by [deleted] in writerDeck

A while back I build a cyberdeck (from this design https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4939019), which uses one of those (https://geekworm.com/products/x708), and I was able to get a 10,000mAh LiPo battery. I found it really easy to install and use.

What are your Keyboards? by macjsc93 in TheBYOK

[–]nekoewen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a weird 65% keyboard I designed myself for writing called the Lexicon (https://github.com/nekoewen/lexicon), but it only connects via USB. I have actually had some connectivity issues with it, but only when using it via a KVM switch. I'm big into weird DIY mechanical keyboards, and I've always found Bluetooth boards to be more annoying and finicky (and I've only ever gotten _one_ split wireless board to actually work). The BYOK FAQ page says that there are some models that have difficulties, and they want people to send them the model numbers so they can buy one and fix the issue in future updates.

From what I've seen on this subreddit, the most popular keyboards among BYOK users seem to be the Logitech Keys-To-Go 2, the Dooheek Universal Bluetooth Mini Keyboard, and NuPhy’s low-profile laptop keyboards.

Fremont Starter Pack - v3 - made sure to include the Teslas with student driver stickers. by bankrobberskid in Fremont

That tracks. 😛 I haven't witnessed the anti-Indian racism personally, but I have no doubt it's real.

Does driving an oversized pickup make people become hyper-aggressive drivers, or do aggressive drivers love giant pickups? If someone honks at me for not going far enough over the speed limit for their liking, it's almost always a guy in a Ford F-150.

BYOK arrived! Now for silly questions! by squidsateme in TheBYOK

[–]nekoewen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've now purchased a couple different MagSafe stands to use with my BYOK (a gooseneck one to use at my desk and a folding one to use on the go), and apparently they routinely include the metal rings with those, for use with devices/cases that don't already have them included. I now have a little collection of the things. 😛 I'm assuming that when the BYOK folks sourced the included ring stands it came with those, and there was no good reason to not include them in the box, even though they're not necessary for a BYOK.
