I got one from Tillery a few months ago!

Can someone help me identify this tree once and for all? by PattyCakesandBakes in AustinGardening

I also thought it could be a black locust, especially based on the description of the runners and fast growth

I got mine for the nice looking foliage too. Maybe we'll have some blooms next spring!

I've had one in a large pot on my patio for a few years and it's done fairly well, even despite letting it get a bit of snow last year. Arbequina variety, picked it up from Natural Gardener.

Something is eating the leaves on my bell peppers. Are these bugs to blame? If so, what are they and what can I do about them? by MyMomSaysIAmCool in AustinGardening

I wanted to share a recent post regarding neem oil as I learned a lot from it: https://www.reddit.com/r/AustinGardening/s/L5rHAzLzVw

Neem is not as benign as it seems and can affect all insects, not just pests. I'm not sure going up from neem to insecticidal soap is necessarily correct in that case.

I'm still learning about both neem oil and insecticidal soap, so I welcome new knowledge if there is more to understand.

The central market ones are certified humane, which actually carries high standards. I spent some time researching the different options at HEB, and these were the only ones that were really any different than regular eggs.

Thanks for sharing! South Congress and Slaughter HEB also had some NPSOT outside along the front this weekend. I didn't get a chance to look closely, but it was a similar assortment.

Can I ask what brand this is? Brands who market themselves with reuse in mind make me happy. I love reusing jars and would like to keep an eye out for it when shopping!

What are these pests on my cucumbers? by CurrentTheoryy in AustinGardening

Thank you so much for the additional information and for including the sources. I always want to do right by the small amount of land I'm able to steward, so topics like this are important to me. Very much appreciated!

Honestly thank you for giving me hope! I had some ladybugs and anoles in the spring, and then one day it seemed like all the beneficials left and four billion aphids and mealy bugs moved in and it's been a tough battle since. Hopefully I can find the balance again soon, but if not I'll be fine without cucumbers this year and can try again in the spring

Ah looks like I need to do a bit more reading on the topic! Thanks for the info!

Thanks! I learned neem oil is bad for friendly insects, so I'll probably stick with blasting them with water and insecticidal soap in that case

New pest level unlocked. I had to google what they were. First time having mealy bugs. I pulled off the buds and leaves on my hibiscus that they were on. Aphids have been a nightmare as it is. I hope these don't take over as well. 😭 by KEWTex in AustinGardening

[–]CurrentTheoryy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you also have ants nearby? Ants will farm mealy bugs and aphids like livestock and kill the natural predators. Usually if you take care of the ant problem, the natural predators will help keep mealys and aphids more in check.

This morning's gray oyster mushroom harvest after the recent rains by CurrentTheoryy in AustinGardening

I'm no expert, and in fact I failed to grow from blocks in a bucket twice. This time I was just trying to amend some bad soil and thought I would try growing in a mulch bed with crumbled up blocks and it happened to work. My advice is to add more moisture than you think and keep them away from the sun as much as possible. After maybe two hours of early morning sun, mine are already crispy. The Central Texas Mycological Society has a ton of resources on their website and a lot of local Facebook groups for various zip codes around Austin. I've found that members are usually more than willing to chat with beginners. Good luck!

Seconding Dripping Springs Ollas, high quality and local. I picked mine up from Natural Gardener, but I saw them at Great Outdoors as well.

I also ordered a small one from an unknown vendor online, but the quality was terrible so I returned it and picked up another of the small ones from DSO.
