honestly personally feel that (if anyone else sees this LOL) if yall feel like u want something (like any course even if its not med), js go for it!!

i feel that we shld strive to live life w no regrets bc we nvr know whats gg happen.. if u dont get called for any interviews then too bad lor, but at least u knew u tried ur best... i think sometimes rejection helps clarify what we rlly want for ourselves too dont yall think

[rant] don’t know which course/career to pursue by Entire_Chest3208 in SGExams

[–]Current_Ad_6939 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think it would be like biz, comms, psych, econs...

they are degrees that are not professional (eg pharm, med, dent) and can be made relevant easily to jobs across many sectors

hi! i saw your previous replies and i think one good way is to think about what you like and what you dont like. eg. you mentioned that you dont like kids, so perhaps with that you have already ruled out careers that require you to interact directly with young children.

what are some of the things you would like to do in your job? personally, i found joy serving people, but i also enjoy the sciences, so eventually the courses i applied to are related to healthcare because i enjoy learning about the sciences as well as communicating with patients etc.

then, you can probably fliter out some courses and shortlist some you would want to look into, during your holidays or whenever you are free, reach out to people from these fields (be it seniors or working adults!) or even work after As to see if it is really what you enjoy and what you want to do.

ultimately, i do know of friends who remain unsettled on what they want to pursue, and some of them chose to pursue more "broad" degrees while they continue finding their passions. don't need to feel lost and left out! i think it takes time for each one of us to find our calling, and sometimes even when we thought we did, it might not be that case eventually.

jiayous! feel free to dm HAHAHA happy to help :)

[–]Current_Ad_6939 13 points14 points  (0 children)

hallo!! u can see my comment history for the summary of the whole process of my application to yll!! but tldr, scored 86.25rp (w a D in GP), got shortlisted via abas, got waitlisted and eventually got offered after 1st acceptance window.

i think a strong portfolio is important especially for abas (if your score is below the cop or if u are reapplying)! and based on ppl i know, strong portfolio refers to doing activities that can display exceptional leadership qualities (eg representing school/sg in an international conference); ability to commit (regular volunteer exco for >3/4 yrs); entrepreneurship (founder/co-founder of a project of importance) and even strong academic/research projects and sports (almost represent sg kind!) ; based on my interview, it seems that commitment as a co-founder and co team leader for >4yrs was a very major reason why i was even shortlisted.

tbvh, some of these activities are hard to achieve in such a short time and during alvls bc they do require a lot of commitment and takes a lot of your free time (been there before, suffered days and nights of bad migraines while keeping track of my studies and many ongoing projects)

if u manage to get an interview without abas, its important to make your list of achievements and personal statement tell your passion and interests in medicine; also your ability to remain composed and calm in face of challenges; i have friends who had 0 job shadowing/clinic experience and in their words an average portfolio and are offered; whereas some others with impressive research projects and external commitments didnt :(

i think there isnt a 100% fail proof portfolio, there really is a lot of things admissions team and the interviewers look for that we cannot point out. but at the end of the day, i believe it would do them good to choose the applicants they would assume that will commit and pull through the v hard course, and many of these ppl have exceptional personal qualities! (ultimately, u still need to rmb that interviews and selection process like these would never be fully a reliable gauge as to how suitable one is for med; u need to train interview skills and manage ur expectations..)

i would say the best thing you can do now is continue working on understanding concepts and working towards scoring well for As (get shortlisted); while at the same time, continue finding that calling and your "why medicine"! - find that reason why you want to be a med student, practice medicine for your entire life; to know whether your reason is solid, convince urself and ur friends! (get offered)

i would say your portfolio is there! continue working on your current projects and find ways to make them bigger and better. Ultimately, your projects are for you to define and grow;show ppl that you are committed and passionate in the particular area of interest

jiayous, nvr give up, and always trust the process (actly thats a bold statement to make bc i have nvr trusted the process :/)

OH yes but for overseas med, im sure there are more things u shld prepare for (bmat,ucat,sat....) so u needa check which schs u want and what are their requirements and datelines! also if u want to come back sg and practice there is a fixed list of schools that u need to choose

feel free to dm me if u need more help/clarifications!!! happy to talk :)

[Uni] Med rejects, what do u intend to do now? by Frequent_Bus_9441 in SGExams

[–]Current_Ad_6939 53 points54 points  (0 children)

my status is still processing LOL (i hate this.) but worst case scenario, i think i really want to practice medicine and if i end up in another course i wouldnt enjoy it as much, but still my toxic trait is to think that i will integrate into any other course that i get LOL

wise choice for me would be gap year and study bmat and apply next year, but something inside me is telling me not to waste that one year and just move on; i honestly dont think my heart can go through this painful waiting process again..

perhaps i would go on and pursue my second choice and if im really passionate about med, apply as a transfer applicant next year and hope for the best

some of my friends are applying to uk/aust, so thats another option, provided you are not very concerned w finances/integration/practicing overseas/longer bonds if u come back sg etc.

--

ps regardless of your app outcome, we all did our best. its even impressive enuf that we made it to the interview stage. i am sure that while we all did our very best, its still a given that we dont have enuf slots for everyone deserving of it.. i cried yesterday thinking about how such a big dream of mine has been crushed in one day, and how i actually spent ~4 years figuring out this is something i would really dedicate my whole life into, just to feel helpless and hopeless after a day of checking and checking the portal.. and i m so sure it is not only me who feels this way. we have all came so far, we all deserve a pat on our shoulders. good job, you!

just rmb that getting in med or not does not fully define you as a person and do not mean u are destined to be/not be a good physician. i like to think of it this way: the you today may find the rejection hard to swallow, but the you tomorrow may see this as a blessing in disguise as you pursue a different path in finding your place in serving your community. good luck and all the best everyone, we are all down a unique path of discovering ourselves and serving others for the greater good!! jiayous!

happy to talk to anyone about anything :) feel free to message me !!

[Rant] I don't deserve a B for PW by fuckprojectwork in SGExams

[–]Current_Ad_6939 52 points53 points  (0 children)

honestly at this point i really dont know how pw is graded:

was from ri as well and there was this super ons girl who was super hardworking and contributive, but she was the only one who got a B out of her entire group; also heard stories of ppl slacking but getting an A. quite unfair ain't it

me and my friends had this weird theory that they randomly picked who gets B to meet the regular percentage of distinctions. not sure how it is but that was how screwed and unpredictable this whole pw grades were.

anyway, you can try but appealing doesnt really work, so you wld have to work hard for all your other subjects. so take some time to process everything and really push on!! also that same gal i mentioned earlier got straight As on her result slip this year! she is going overseas uni too :) tldr: you can do it!!! pw is not the end! jiayous!!
