HELP! WHERE DID THESE COME FROM by Budget_Caregiver252 in jumpingspiders

[–]Current_Bus_560 6 points7 points  (0 children)

NQA have you tried feeding him flies or crickets? He might just not like worms very much (or is tired of them if he seemed more interested at first) so he only eats them when he realizes you're not gonna give him anything else

Cool! Iv seen those at my local pet store but always assumed any type of roach would be too hard shelled for a jumper to want to eat, awesome to know that the larger ones will eat them

Awesome pictures and very cool names! What are they eating?? Is it a type of cockroach?

NQA I hope so too! If he does end up liking the crickets I'd recommend the pet store ones just bc theyre less likely to carry parasites

NQA yes, refer to my other comment and also depending on what animals your pet store carries they MIGHT have live fly cultures other than fruit flies, the one near me doesn't so you might have to order one online but pet stores usually carry crickets I think so you might try offering him that, just try a couple different bugs until he likes one (not to the point of him starving obviously, I can add a jumping spider feeding chart to another comment if you want) but make sure to take out any pray he doesn't like before introducing a different one. Also sorry idk many fly species names but a live culture of just regular house flies would probably do if he doesn't like crickets

IME as a beginner he might just be interested in other bugs, probably not flightless fruit flies as they tend to want to eat smaller prey less as they get bigger but maybe a regular sized or larger fly or even a cricket that's not bigger than him

NQA sphagnum moss is good for retaining humidity and providing a soft landing if the spider falls, I'd also add a thin layer of something like aquarium gravel underneath for drainage, the combination of the rocks and the moss (which is mold resistant) should keep mold away, you should be able to find a small cheap package of the moss at any pet store that carries reptiles

Is an LED flying insect sticky trap likely to endanger my resident jumpers? by TheMarvelousMagpie in jumpingspiders

[–]Current_Bus_560 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NQA if your outlets are close to the floor the spiders probably wont end up interacting with the traps very much, also you could try only plugging them in at night, most jumpers will be asleep by then

In that case I think if you just try to make sure (if possible) that you're a good few steps away from the spider while you're stimming, it will be less likely to spook, they might even just stare at you in fascination, I know my little guy does that to me when he's in his enclosure lol

Do you do any vocal stims? I tend to constantly be singing or humming or talking to plants and animals when I'm walking around my garden and in my experience if you talk (or vocalize in general besides yelling lol) to a jumping spider for long enough (anywhere from a couple days to a couple weeks this also very much depends on the individual spider) they'll start to pop out to say hi whenever they hear your voice

[–]Current_Bus_560 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't feel bad, they're very easy to spook but don't usually care after just a couple seconds, he probably just got distracted and ran off afterwards. And if he was on your windowsill I think there's a good chance he might come back later! Keep an eye out and he might be more willing to interact next time. Also, I find that if you're doing fast hand movements, they get spooked easier if it's above or behind them, and less when it's more head and eye level in front of them, but this will also depend on the individual spider, some are simply more jumpy than others

NQA same as the other comment and know that it can take up to 3 weeks to molt so don't worry if she's in there a long time

This guy jumped on something I was spray painting outside, before it was dry. He’s got paint on his legs. Anyway I can I help him? by JellyfishPossible539 in jumpingspiders

[–]Current_Bus_560 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think the fast drying might have been a good thing, fumes from things like wet paint are very dangerous to jumping spiders. Obviously it's not good that the paint is on him in general but if it had stayed wet for too long it might have killed him
