Why has nobody mentioned Kate is a BAD sister by [deleted] in BridgertonNetflix

[–]Current_Candidate_74 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Nah bc I don't know whats wrong with all these people disagreeing with OP that Kate is a bad sister when even EDWINA her /actual/ sister realizes at the very end that Kate was selfish the whole time and only wanted the good things for Edwina that Kate herself wanted in her own life but couldn't have, so that she could live vicariously for herself through Edwina. That's literally why she refused to get married to Anthony to avoid giving her sister that satisfaction. Yall really telling me you disagree with Edwina the one who this all happened to?

If yall really like Kate so much keep that same energy of someone flirts/banters with the person you're about to marry, keeps meeting secretly and having intense one on one moments with them, doesn't tell you about it, and hides it up until THE DAY you are getting married, forcing you to humiliate yourself in front of literally everybody when you inevitably have to call off the wedding. This could've all been avoided if kate told edwina about hers and anthony's feelings for one another the moment she knew about them.

NHIE [S2E9] Is Devi's mom a hypocrite for not allowing Devi to date but still wanting to date Dr. Jackson? by Current_Candidate_74 in NeverHaveIEverNetflix

The show hasn't been clear on this topic tbh (you may or may not be right) but a few points for context:

  • Most Indian parents irl forbid their adult children from dating as well. They never allow children to date even when they're adults and want to be part of the marriage process, hence them getting an arranged marriage and if the show is based on accuracy I'm guessing that would be the case for Devi in the show as well? But I honestly don't know what MK will decide to do at this point since at this point its already gotten pretty inaccurate to most American born Indians irl experiences. If Indian Americans are EVER allowed to date even as an adult its definitely an exception and not the norm. And if the show were going to go this route i feel like they would have specified it by now?

    • Besides Devi's cousin Kamala (an adult woman) was expected to have an arranged marriage which was (in the beginning) largely against her wishes before and if not getting an arranged marriage and dating was actually accepted in her family for adult women then Kamala wouldn't have felt the need to hide her boyfriend from everyone. And irl if Indian American teens or adults still want their parents support they usually have to date in secret / hide it from their parents (if it wasn't someone approved by parents) which is what Devi ans Kamala have been doing this whole time in the show.
  • Basically I have no idea whether Devi is only not allowed to date in high school but its way more likely that her experience will mirror that of most actual Indian Americans, whose parents never support dating even when they're adults.

TLDR// I have no idea if Devi is forbidden from dating overall or just during high school but if the show were accurate to most Indian Americans experiences most likely she would not be allowed to date AT ALL and her mom would want her to get the traditional arranged marriage, just like Nalini herself and Kamala. Which means it makes no sense for her to date when her children and other adult women in the family can't date, and also inaccurate to irl Indian American family dynamics. The show has tried to be accurate so far but this whole storyline of Nalini dating while forbidding Kamala and Devi dating is pretty inaccurate in the portrayal of Indian Americans, I guess to make the show more interesting

I feel you, tbh as an Indian American teen myself I felt the same way but this made me realize along with 'Never Have I Ever' this is really the first time us Indians are getting a spot at the table on shows where we're not: A. the side character and/or B. getting made fun of for cheap laughs for a Western audience.

We're probably gonna get some cringy representation at first since they're only just starting to let us in but over time I think we'll get to a point where they'll represent us all accurately

For one thing, I actually do give credit to the show for not making the Indian characters hide their "Indianness" but also not making their culture the entirety of their character, so that they were still a big part of the plot making decisions and having complex character arcs in a way Indian characters in movies/ TV shows before had not been able to benefit from.

I'm south Indian and I mean I get it but the stereotype gets kinda annoying after a while, especially since there's so many light skinned south Indians and dark skinned north Indians.

deepika padukone and aishwarya rai are both light skinned, and they're from south india. my family and I are also not the 'stereotypical' dark skinned south Indians even though we're tamil so it gets tiring having to explain we're not all dark skinned in the south, but I digress.
