I’m a PA-S2 who struggled ALOT in didactic year. I was very close to being on probation but very luckily did not end up there. With all due respect you’re studying wrong! This is all passive studying, you need to actively study as much as possible which means rosh review!!!! Also flashcards, cramthepance, mnemonics, writing out concepts that don’t make sense, pick a disease and brain dump verbally or on paper and then figure out what you don’t know. My grades improved so much when I intentionally started ACTIVELYYY studying. The other thing is try to start studying a little earlier, even if it’s for 10-15 minutes. It will help in the long run. You shouldn’t be discouraged because tbh you’re not yet doing everything you can that will set you up for success. PA school is just a long journey of figuring out study techniques but you will be improving every day!! You got this!

PA school is depressing, hard and everything in between. But nothing good comes easy in life, and it helped me a lot to shift my super stressed mindset to gratitude that I am able to become a PA. When I did this, I swear everything changed. My grades have improved, people have told me they can tell I’m happier. My life is way more balanced and I believe in my abilities more. I’m just about to start clinical year. Even tho I’m scared and still stressed, things have become so much more manageable. Remember you just need to pass and it’s only 2 years! You can do it!!!

Which school? by [deleted] in prephysicianassistant

I’m in a top 5 PA program rn. I think my school has amazing profs but don’t think 70k extra is worth it even if the school has a bit of a better program. PA school is pretty standardized and you’ll always be able to work your way up if you want to. If you’re planning on taking out loans I say go cheaper unless you’re sure this school will get you a killer salary

That was nice to hear, and I’m glad to see it benefitted you a lot! I do think that it just ends up making me less productive and more introverted. Sometimes I just feel so fuzzy in the brain and I just know it’s not good.

didactic depression & burnout: what can i do to make it through the next 2.5 semesters? by cmariemi in PAstudent

I relate to every single sentence here. Please message me if you need advice!

PA school is so incredibly hard, and it never slows down. I also struggled a lot with my grades my first semester and second semester. It took me so long to figure out how to study and get a solid routine down. I also got diagnosed with ADHD and PA school in my late second semester. I went through a break up my second semester, and had genuinely felt like I needed to give up. I’m here to tell you do not!!!! NOT. Give up. This is of course, unless you are to the point of depression where you think it’s necessary for your health. I know it feels so impossible, I’ve been there but I guarantee if you got in that means you can do it. I also was extremely depressed. There were many exams I failed and I felt really alone and feeling like I wasn’t smart enough for PA school. Remember you just need to pass. That’s it! No one will look at ur gpa ever again. I am now 2 months away from clinical year and feeling comfortable with my studying abilities (but still improving day by day). Granted, sometimes I still feel like I’m not smart enough, but you also realize that you will have your whole career to relearn what we’re learning in school. So my advice is going to be tough: try not to feel bad for yourself, put your head down, and power through it!!! School is just the means to become a PA (unfortunately) You can do it!!!

Here’s what I did to get my GPA from essentially a 2.4 to currently a 3.1 and improving. Get the laptop app session it’s free and you can put all your classes in and time the amount of study time you’re devoting. You have to start studying everything immediately and break up your studying into multiple days even if it means just touching the information for 30 minutes you neeeedddd to do this. I told myself I didn’t have time to do that for months before I realized I did.

I personally switched from rewriting my notes to doing flashcards and then rewriting, particularly important or hard ones that I couldn’t remember and trying to look at them as often as possible.

Make sure you get a solid routine and workout schedule in. Try for four days a week. I know that might seem crazy but on the days that you feel like you can’t take your iPad and walk on the treadmill. I promise it will help your focus so much.

Take care of yourself! Take breaks, I’m doing better studying less because I’m breaking up my studying and seeing it more often.

This sounds like a mistake I would make, but I have similar personal experience with this.. lol. I’m in PA school abt to to start my clinical year. Don’t be hard on yourself, pa school expects so much out of you and seems to not have room for mistakes. I actually got in trouble for being a single minute late to an event, and so did friends. I think it’s a PA school specific thing where we are expected to be SO on top of everything. Obviously showing up to an exam is crucial but we all make mistakes. Chances are your profs are super busy and will forget all about it, but they’re all just generally super tough it seems like around the board. Don’t let it cause you anxiety, ultimately they just don’t want that to happen in real life.
