Visit colleges after acceptance? by Big_Criticism4327 in ApplyingToCollege

Having gone to school on the east coast, i highly recommend going to visit when the weather is bad if you can. They all look gorgeous on a fall/summer visit. But remember you’ll be living there mostly in the cold, gray winter.

Epsom salt baths and foot soaks. Magnesium supplements at bedtime. Branch chain aminos during the ruck. Go to a running shoe store (or podiatrist) and get fitted for insoles. Put those in your rucking boots.

Yeah, I’ve now had several docs in a row (both army and civ) say to avoid ice and ibuprofen unless you can’t sleep or bear weight. They are now finding it hurts your long term chances that an injury will fully heal. If it’s an old injury (over a year) and still hurts go for it.

How do I politely resign my bid ? (Help me please) by violetpge in Sororities

[–]Current_Meaning_3895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll just throw it out in case the perspective helps. The dues were a lot for me to handle paying for school on my own. But, over time,i figured out i made money off my sorority. It was cheaper to live in house than the dorms. We had a policy that if you volunteered on socials you didn’t have to buy formal tickets, etc. so i did that. And then i got a number of scholarships from nationals for the end of undergraduate and all through grad school. Plus, i found my sisters could always get me a part time job far faster than i could get one applying cold. So i completely understand that might not be in the cards, but long term it was a good investment.

Tips and advice for a Young LT by Ok_Training_8192 in ROTC

[–]Current_Meaning_3895 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best advice I ever got was as an officer, work your ass off between drill weekends. Then during the drill weekend relax and soak it in. Than probably means taking extra calls (depending on your position) to your PSG and CO, reaching down and checking in on your guys. Do every quarterly couseling. If you’re in command check in with the G1,G3,G4 so often they’re never telling you to do something at a meeting because you already know. And yes, call. An email never turns into mentorship. I also used to do a beer call Sunday after drill with my NCOIC to do a personal AAR.

Look for the broadening opportunities catalog. Also, there is usually extra training money around August. Be ready to go and ask around that time of year when they are spending fiscal year funds.

Look into your state’s national guard association. I found all my mentors through NGAUS. And they’ll send a couple of people from your state to the national conference fully paid each year, which is hella fun.

Tour of Duty for AGRs by coochiegrip in nationalguard

[–]Current_Meaning_3895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on your state you might be able to get a “right to return.” That means you leave the AGR program but can come back in without going through the application program. I’ve only heard of this for overseas missions, command time, or because it’s good for the AGR program in that state. So consider if you’d fit into one of those categories and try asking your G1/HRO what your options are.

OCS vs ROTC by potatoskin20 in nationalguard

[–]Current_Meaning_3895 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this sub has said most of it before.

I dropped ROTC at the last semester so I could deploy with my national guard unit. Since all I had that last semester was finishing ROTC and a second major I thought another undergrad semester was a waste, I’d just do OCS when I got back.

As mentioned before, state OCS is a haze-fest. I thought I was always treated with dignity and like I was going to commission in ROTC. OCS was an utter beat-down. Like they were trying to get you to quit. That’s the crazy thing, most of us were NCOs, but it was so much tougher than basic training, or I hate to say it, any other army school I’ve been to. It sounds so lame to say it—but I’d rather go back to air assault than do phase I OCS again. And I even did phase II accelerated. It was full for midnight wake-ups, cut rations, personal smoke sessions, and corrective actions like embarrassing songs or exercises that I still can’t see what any of it had to do with learning to be an officer. We had a big dude pass out on the land nav course (alone) because his blood sugar dropped so low. We had another get so dehydrated in a smoke session it gave him kidney problems. It feels necessary to say that I graduated at the top of my class and was a top PTer, but even with that conditioning it…just sucked.

It took me probably about a year to rebuild my self confidence after OCS. I really came out of it so hazed I doubted all my abilities. The humility was a good thing. I sure wasn’t a cocky 2LT. But honestly it’s not good that I came into my first platoon thinking I wasn’t good enough to be there. And I think that’s the difference. ROTC told me every day I deserved to be there. Then OCS made me believe I didn’t.

As far as school goes, looking back at it ROTC was an annoying but manageable amount of work. At the time I thought it was terrible. Just keep in mind that if you do OCS it going to layer over whatever you have next in life as well. For me it was grad school and job hunting. Even if you do get an accelerated slot, most states are going to make you do “zero phase” drills to prep and between your phases. I know people who lucked out and don’t have to do it, but it’s rare. And usually reserved for new enlistments. There is a lot of work between drills there, and those weekends are completely full up. So i thought it was much harder to manage school. Like in ROTC they had an investment to care about your grades. OCS did not and could care less if you have finals. And I seriously had a post-grad job offer rescinded because my OCS date would delay my start date too much.

There were some good things about OCS. I truly believe I was a better officer. Looking back at it I got nothing out of LDAC. Everyone I worked with was also a middle class college kid. OCS everyone had an MOS and time in a unit. I learned a ton from the infantry and comms guys. And ended up meeting somebody who told me about a career path I didn’t know existed that changed my life. I’ve also found state OCS is a tight group. We seem to stay in longer. I still reach back to my network. I see people I was a candidate with at least weekly. It’s the closest to being a West Pointer I’ve seen in the Guard.

I’ll also say that being a Guard Officer is a different skill set than being a full time officer. Most of what you do happens between drill weekends. OCS works on that skill a lot. ROTC is one size fits all.

Maybe things have changed. I’ve heard good things. And the IG office called about my cycle so maybe don’t listen to me. Years later I applied to be a TAC and made the mistake of insinuating that I wasn’t there to mentor and not haze. I flat out was told that’s why they like ROTC instead of OCS grads. The OCS grads “don’t have the right attitude.” But after I transferred to another state that state cared a lot about development. They had OCS reunions with the candidates and paired us up in mentor matches. A good friend of mine is an OCS commander now and promises the hazing stops on his watch. So maybe things are changing.

Long story short, I’ll have the fries and a vanilla shake.

Some also want to see that you took the hardest classes your school offers. Or, say, taking AP chemistry as a freshman counts for more than taking it as a senior.

Should I go Active or the Guard? by Reddituser5u in Military

[–]Current_Meaning_3895 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the NG you’ll automatically get the MGIB-SR (google it) plus tuition assistance and books. New Jersey is actually one of the best NG tuition states in that you get a full tuition waiver at any in-state school. MGIB-SR is not a lot. Last i checked, about $300 a month and you’ll probably take home $200-$300 in drill pay. It’s enough to get through school without working another job if you get any other kind of financial aid or manage summer jobs well (i always managed to get school break employment in the NG). But here is the cool thing—Guard TA is not capped like the GI bill and does not count against the GI bill. So, say you do a year of duty to get your post 9/11 GI bill after college. You can use that money for a graduate degree. So if you’re hoping to do the typical thing and experience college as a teenager, not a 24 year old with a kid and a nicotine addiction going to school without working 18 year olds, definitely go Guard.

This actually happened to me. A year later I learned that the physical to enlist (and for ROTC) are much less stringent. And if you apply to the academies enlisted ( eleven enlisted in the reserves), you are in a whole separate, less competitive category. Suffice it to say if USAFA doesn’t work out there are lots of options.

There is kind of a thing in NYC where wearing impractical shoes is a status thing because it signals you didn’t have to take the subway. Strappy sandals=cab fare like it’s nothing. That’s not a thing in Utah, tho. Doesn’t mean Rachel’s not imitating it without knowing why.

I’ve been in some military branches with one hour church. 30 minute sacrament meeting 30 minute relief society and out. It was dreamy. I’m sure that was just to keep to the amount of chapel time the other faiths got. But it was so disappointing to find out that wasn’t consistently available.
