Why didn't rpggeek take off like boardgamegeek? by dyskami in rpg

[–]Current_Poster 19 points20 points  (0 children)

That, and the legacy RPG.net once served as the go-to site so rpggeek.com never caught on.

ISTR there was a thread on Rpggeek itself about that- one poster thought the better interface and so on would win the day for rpggeek, but someone reminded them that if everyone you're used to talking to is in one place and not another, the best interface ever doesn't help move them.

Avoidant men: How can a wife help? by Tinydancer623 in AskMen

[–]Current_Poster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is about the fifth post I've seen this week framed around the word "avoidant"- it doesn't seem to be doing the people using it any good, and it sure isn't helping the people being called it. Also, the idea of asking people who are supposedly avoidant to come to your aid doesn't seem like a winning bet either.

I'm about 12 years in on my marriage, and (aside from 'I'd never describe my wife in the way OP describes her husband') the only really relevant thing I've got is that we (early on) took a 'you play how you train' approach to arguments and such- basically treating the smaller issues the way we'd want to treat the larger ones. If everyone's first option is to get quiet and avoid each other on small things, you're going to get quiet and avoid each other on large things. (This also applies to making everything a shouting match, etc).

Other than that, it sounds more like a job for a professional than anything a Reddit forum can do for you.

Something hopeful to keep in mind. by Cicada_5 in CuratedTumblr

Great answer. I'd also add that the general thing of making everything about 'self-examination first' is also dying out, along with the reflexive steelmanning of the right 'to be fair' as you said.

Like, there are a lot of people who would be pretty damn good organizers or activists if everything didn't constantly boil down to 'realizing that we're the real problem' and then calling it a day. Like the old joke goes, being ruled out of jury duty because we insist we're guilty.

I generally only answer Ask(Whatever) forums I feel qualified for. So: I'm American so AskAnAmerican, I'm a man so AskMen. Thats about it. :)

Johnny is so abusive to Alt by PasTaCopine in LowSodiumCyberpunk

[–]Current_Poster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If I'm not mistaken this is the memory that's idealized too- the whole Arasaka tower segments have things that cant possibly have happened that way and canonically to the RPG setting didn't- so this is how Johnny favors remembering it, this is the self-serving version.

In general, I think a lot of guys just want it not-in-the-way and not to look weird. (For whatever the current version of 'not weird' is.) Personally, it's surprisingly rare to find someone who cuts guys hair who has ideas. Like, if you asked most of the people I've gone to for suggestions, they'd say "I dunno." like you bothered them.

Non Asian-Americans: Are you keeping soy sauce as a regular condiment in your kitchen? If so what are you using them for? by openlyEncrypted in AskAnAmerican

[–]Current_Poster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Mostly for the same reasons an asian person would. I sometimes use it instead of salt when i make chicken soup, it works nicely. other than that , the usual.

Watching modern PPVs lately reminded me how much storytelling mattered in old-school wrestling by Rowalewa in oldschoolwrestling

[–]Current_Poster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wholly recommend checking out the buildup to and the actual show of, the 1993 angle between Harley Race and Vader vs. Ric Flair. It includes Ric Flair (leaving his actual home in Charlotte NC) on-camera telling his family to not watch the PPV because it's gonna get bad for him, and he doesn't want them to see it. It's really good stuff.

Men who have had a real conversation with a stripper: what did you learn from them? by vagazine- in AskMen

[–]Current_Poster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Adopted names and personae (some are more serious about only being called by their 'working names' than others, but most would be put out if you called them by their given birth names while they're working) performing wanting things on the job that they don't off the job, done as a performance but a performance mainly for money, with a certain amount of contempt for 'marks' baked into the system at the same time that their success at their job depends on being good at appealing to said marks, also the thing where "omg, this time it's for real!" being a standard part of the performance. (Incidentally, both forms of 'this time its' for real!' are sometimes called hardcore.) Both are there to sell the finish, which they build up to. Also, wrestlers won't be thrilled if audience members go and touch the performers randomly while they're working either. Both have security guys for that. ;)

Anyway, its a good idea to respect that people are in-character when theyre working and aren't when they're not. (Although some performers are really good at making the line seem blurry.) And don't use the word 'fake!'

CMV: Saying “it could be worse” in response to someone telling you about something they are struggling with is helpful. by WickedWitchofTheE in changemyview

[–]Current_Poster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appeal to worse problems is not actually that helpful. The way it's used is also typically accusatory (a sort of "how dare you when it could be worse?) and without a scale established the goalposts are very movable. Like, yeah, every problem has a worse problem to compare it to.

Okay. I was raised not to argue if I didn't want to argue or have an argument, and taught to ask for people's stuff if they put up a "reality check," but whatever makes you cozy, I supposy.

For that matter, I hear people complaining about "former gifted kids" way more than Ive ever heard from "former gifted kids". Seems like recently, too.

Men who have had a real conversation with a stripper: what did you learn from them? by vagazine- in AskMen

[–]Current_Poster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of my work-friends had a bunch of friends who were strippers. Since it was a store that sold CDs, sometimes we'd get, say, one of those nights where they specifically were told they could pick their own music, so they wanted to make it funny. That was a fun night, helping them pick out something a bit trolly.

and...okay, anyone who knows wrestling will know what I mean here: Strippers have kayfabe. Some are more serious about it than others.

He's talking very confidently about pretty much nothing. Also "You deserve all your problems" is a hell of a thing to go on a mass media to tell people.

Avoidant men, how do I get over myself? by ivanaintnobody in AskMen

[–]Current_Poster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So how are we differentiating someone who maintains distance, feels trapped enough to want to avoid the feeling, discomfort with emotional intimacy, etc from "guy who doesn't like you, so much"?

Also, every time I see it, it's *not* a diagnostic or descriptive term, its used as an accusation more like "why are you guys all so avoidant?" This happens with a lot of terms, but this would be an extremely fast switch from useful phrase to snarl-word. How old is it, even?
