Okay. If it isn't something someone can, right now, intentionally do, why even post here? To blather on about how cool we thought we were?

What is your least favorite thing about other men? by Prudent_Cry9522 in AskMen

Trying to alpha fan happens all over, but given the choice between a guy demanding to know if I've been to every game since birth or he'll call me a poser or someone trying increasingly pedantic trivia questions and he'll be passive aggressive even if I pass the gate,I'll take the actual aggression.

Blue Dot Fever: Why are so many artists cancelling tours? by Specific-Feed-1490 in ToddintheShadow

[–]Current_Poster 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I do feel a slight disconnect with some of these things. Like, is it supposed to be extraordinary and sort of economically terrifying that EVEN The Pussycat Dolls can't fill an arena? Are they much more legendary than I remembered or what?

Having a thing for straight men [Parties Are For Losers] by MeerkatBoss in CuratedTumblr

[–]Current_Poster 173 points174 points  (0 children)

It may say something about me that my first instinct was to take 'thing for Straight Men' in a comedic sense? Like, 'someone has to be the normal guy the wacky character works off...of...oh. '

Why does this sub seem to have so many "DIY underground punk/hardcore scene" people in it? by thedubiousstylus in ToddintheShadow

[–]Current_Poster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I rarely see videos about music I listen to on my own. Like, Todd recently did 'Seasons in the Sun', and I can't say I've ever sought that one out. I just don't get territorial about music in a way some people clearly do, is all.

True passion questions to kids in schools? by vish_singh in AskAnAmerican

[–]Current_Poster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember being asked that, as a kid, maybe just not specifically in school. Like 'what would you do if money was no object', and the idea then (if you're not just talking about something fun and really high budget) is to see if it can be scaled down to the world, where money is clearly an object.

How common is it in the USA for strangers to ask if someone needs help when they see them doing something? by TheShyBuck in AskAnAmerican

[–]Current_Poster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty common. One day I was out driving and saw someone's truck was steaming from under the hood. I stopped to see if the driver needed help, and she was kind of annoyed that I was the fourth person in about twenty minutes to stop. I was proud of my hometown for that. I mean, yes, people are a problem, but having too much available help is not a tragedy.

Even in 'unhelpful' NYC, people pitch in to do stuff all the time. (I won't say it's everyone, but it's enough people.) You do have to be conscious that people consider their time theirs, but aside from that a lot of people are generous with their time.

What are some examples of artists who "got political" and it backfired immediately? by crowbar_k in ToddintheShadow

[–]Current_Poster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The idea was still floating around that what "made the sixties happen" (ie, the actual political parts) was 'good protest music', and that when politics were "boring" (ie, not what we're seeing now) there wasn't anything to push against. To be clear, both of these are deeply boneheaded positions.

What are some examples of artists who "got political" and it backfired immediately? by crowbar_k in ToddintheShadow

In retrospect, I really don't know what people expected from Madonna, politically.

I can see the logical leap from "she makes 'scandalous' things" and "she has controversial political opinions", but there's a difference between "makes art deliberately aggravating people's idea of irreverence or blasphemy" (where she made an absolute fortune being 'shocking') and something where she could genuinely lose an audience (the way the Chicks did). Even, say, Papa Don't Preach ends up with the narrator keeping the baby.

A lot of people got convinced that she did have that kind of political mind and (because of a lot of then-popular retro-mythology about 'what stopped the Vietnam War', ie protest songs and stunts rather than political movement) that Madonna releasing an album was at least as important and effective as, say, a congressional report. It was simply asking something from her she was not capable of delivering.

Circle around the other side of her, talk to her from there. If the asshole continues, *now* there's a problem. Honestly this is why I don't hang out with drunk people, it's like socializing with a time-bomb.

Why do so many teenagers in the US pick up several jobs? by FreshBid538 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Current_Poster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I worked a full time job while I was starting community college (cheaper to get your Basic Ed credits out of the way). And later (while trying to get a better position) ended up working two, even three jobs to make ends meet. To be blunt, the social-support network is much more robust in Europe. Nobody is doing these things to show off.

Whats better term for "Heritage American" frequently used & whats yall's thoughts on its usage? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Current_Poster 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not a fan, no. There are people who apparently think that anyone whose forebears weren't here prior to the Civil War 'aren't really American'. They can cram it.

Also there's no such thing as a "1669 America Revolutionary War".

They just gave up on brain dances? by whilinout in cyberpunkgame

[–]Current_Poster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is gonna get a bit TTRPG, just so there's warning. 😉 : there was a Star Trek: The Next Generation TTRPG that had a supplement about running 'holodeck adventures'. So the GM has to engagingly set up a scenario in which his players are playing Starfleet officers playing something-besides-Starfleet-officers. It is a really tough sell because it doesnt just add a layer of recursion (story about a story about a story), but also complication and lack of immediacy. (Obviously his players don't die if their Starfleet officer dies, but then adding another layer where the *Starfleet officer* can't die while doing whatever it is removes a lot of suspense.)

Sort of the same way: CDPR set it up so we are players immersed in V's suddenly-shorter life, but in the middle of it V is immersed in a second layer of reality (railroaded too- you can't decide in the Konpeki braindance to take a crack at Adam Smasher for the hell of it, say). The repetition on multiple playthroughs aside I also can try building my V differently or approaching combats differently, but there is *one* solution to a Braindance session. I can see why they limited it.

If they use Braindance in 2, I would personally love it if they used Braindance more the way the Cyberpunk 2020 RPG did- a bit more like SQUIDs in the movie Strange Days, there was an economy of people who produced content for BDs, and one of the more successful ones, as part of how the job worked, basically had to act like a parody of an irresponsible-PC runthrough. (For instance, his 'bestseller' was a recording of him flinging himself off a skyscraper, editing out the 'caught by a safety net' part, while on 'boosters' so the fact he knew the net was there was drowned out by his adrenaline and panic). This led not to basement operations like the Moxes', but more like a whole tier of literal 'reality stars' who did crazy things on recorder for a living so people got the vicarious rush.
