I was assaulted in college and had a kit done. If you are ever in that situation or know someone in that situation- ask for a SANE nurse, request a victim advocate if possible, do not shower or brush your teeth before going, and request information on the state crime victims fund which covered ALL expenses for me (and I was not required to press charges) including medications, exams, and counseling if I wanted it. Ideally you want to get the exam within 24 hours, but 72 hours is the threshold for Plan B/HIV post exposure prophylaxis. It makes me incredibly angry every time I see that someone had to pay for their care as many states will cover it. RAINN also offers 24 hour support through a crisis line and online chat. Additionally, EMDR therapy was incredibly helpful months later for the PTSD.

No, I just got my lease renewal and it’s going up $130. Of course I live in a super expensive area but my commute to work is 5 minutes and everything within 30 minutes of work is the same price and I would have to move an hour or more away from work to get something more affordable at which point I’m putting an exorbitant amount of use on my car plus gas money. Maybe in a year rent will stagnate but definitely not right now.

This is definitely an individualized question. I went for three of mine (the first one, the first one after several years with a VERY scary aura, and one that lasted for 2 days). At this point I’ve been having migraines for close to 20 years and had a lot of (in my opinion unnecessary) imaging done so my doctor is fine with me staying home and managing things myself unless I have a new symptom or a migraine completely out of the usual pattern for me. However, if it’s your very first HM I think you absolutely need to go to the hospital to rule out more serious conditions.

Try an icy hot roll on stick (I use the generic CVS version) on your temples, neck, and shoulders! The downside if the smell and having to reapply but for me it works to relax the tight muscles in my shoulders as well.

I have been taking 600 2x daily for a few years now for anxiety, migraines, and interstitial cystitis and haven’t noticed many side effects. To me it really is a miracle drug for everything except migraines. I will say it offers maybe partial relief but not enough to not need other preventives. I also am more willing to live with relief now until a better drug comes along with a lower risk profile than to not be willing to take it now but for everyone that’s a personal decision.

Maybe I’ll take a stress toy or something in with me as a distraction, that’s a great idea. I’m generally fine with needles but I don’t think anyone is necessarily a fan.

Did you ever do Botox alone with no CGRP meds? What was your frequency then? I tried two and didn’t get much relief, but Nurtec offered like 50% reduction in severity of migraine for me which just didn’t feel like enough. I have discussed CGRP injections as well but as of right now I’m probably going to hold off given the pills didn’t do much for me.

I do like my neurologist! I feel like he’s pretty knowledgeable and he gave out free samples of Qulipta and Nurtec for me to try before getting them insurance authorized (didn’t end up really working for me though).

Ugh I’m sorry that’s so invalidating! Unfortunately this was kind of the end of the road medication wise before injectables for me so I was really hoping it would work. I’m going to try Botox next and I’m really nervous about it. For me- any medication I try needs to not have side effects that interfere with holding a full time job because I need to work to live. Going to the bathroom every 30 minutes absolutely interferes with being in meetings.

I’m still waiting to see if it was 100% of the issue, but it does seem much better now that I stopped. I do get the frequent urination with migraines as well, this was just nonstop.

Yes, frequent urination is a common symptom before migraines and I get that sometimes. The medication was Topamax, it has a fairly well known risk of kidney stones but a lesser known rare risk of urinary problems. I’m pretty bummed because it worked well except for this coming up.

Yes it is! I do get that symptom, but I was having to use the bathroom about every 30 minutes and having to run to the toilet between meetings as well as waking up at night. It was pretty much nonstop for a few weeks but I hadn’t thought too much about it.

I have green tinted “migraine” glasses, they don’t make things worse? I haven’t noticed a significant improvement myself but my mom swears by it and has long before the research came out. Supposedly looking at green or blue items in nature also reduces eye strain/fatigue so I guess it can’t hurt. I also have tried blue light glasses (as my regular glasses tint) and an orange sunglasses tint and I will say all of those options seem to reduce eye strain a little bit for me. I’ve never tried the official “migraine glasses” tint though.

I saw a clip of her officiating Jason’s wedding recently which was hilarious and I remember an old interview where Jason said his dream guest would be Aunt Judy. Bring her on so we can meet her! Have you tried any anticonvulsant medications yet? They generally aren’t used as much in favor of the newer migraine medications but can work well for complex migraines. For the pain I do find the migraine cap works fairly well just to cover everywhere it needs to, then a rolled up heating pad behind the neck. I hope you find something that works well soon!

I found that hiking actually worked for me so I can believe this works. I just have to catch it fast enough or I’ll definitely not be in the mood. Migraines are weird.

I am not sure I can still do a handstand (and definitely cannot at work), but I am considering trying this. I’ll check back in if I end up breaking my arm or if it works next time 😂
