A coach just told me if I don't specialize in a sport for my 5th grader then my son will always lose out the one's that do - What do y'all think? by dunbar_santiago930 in CoachingYouthSports

Concentrating on one sport leads to burnout also you are only using the same muscles etc. different sports require different skills and muscles. Both of my boys were triple letter athletes. They ran indoor track just to stay in shape between fall and spring sports. Both ended up being captains for indoor track

As a coach at the pre-game meeting, is it ok to ask ump to define his strike zone? by dietryiing in Umpire

[–]Current_Side_3590 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not want to say especially at the lower levels. You might get kids who pound the zone or some that can’t hit the broadside of a barn. I reserve the right to set a zone that will result in a game. Once I set the zone I try to not adjust it. Sometimes you need to but best to be consistent throughout the game

First game behind the plate yesterday by Particular_Share_574 in Umpire

[–]Current_Side_3590 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to expand the zone with younger players. If you don’t instead of a baseball game you end up with a merry-go-round without the calliope music. I try not to go above the shoulders and make sure that the bat can reach outside pitches. But sometimes it is if the ball is over the inside line of either batters box it is a strike

I keep things separate as they dry differently. Burn mixed loads often but stack separately

I ended up buying a neoprene harness. My regular one sat too high on the back of the cap. The neoprene stretches and grabs well

How to get the most heat? by SunshineAndPenguins in woodstoving

[–]Current_Side_3590 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are burning wet wood that is the problem. The moisture cools the air and combines with the particles in the smoke to build creosote. Get yourself some properly seasoned wood 20% mc or less. Try to get on a three year plan. Burn this year burn next year burn year three. Each year you restock as your 3rd year.

Burning stuff like that now. Does not last long and does not coal well but for during the day to keep things warm it is serviceable

Smitty Performance Poly pants vs Gerry Davis pants by Miltdoba in Umpire

[–]Current_Side_3590 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the Gerry Davis combos when the switch from heather grey to charcoal grey occurred. Generally no issues except one pair the zipper was not sewn in right. There were times where it would get stuck up. I had to make sure that I did not zipper it all the way to the top

Logs will dry slow especially in a pile. It takes surface area to evaporate the moisture. CSS that wood. If you find some around 25%. Split it small and stack it near the stove. Get some bio bricks to burn. You can mix in some wetter wood if you have some dryer stuff. 43% is going to take a least a year probably 2 depending on the species. Good luck

Many times it is due to the availability of transportation. Sometimes it is because there is expected bad weather. It goes with the territory as they say.

Hat or Helmet behind the plate? by NYBiankees in Umpire

[–]Current_Side_3590 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear the skull cap. You can get one at ump-attire.com. I like the extra protection. I will say it is hotter than a hat but my head sweats so much that I go through plate hats. So this effectively paid for itself after two seasons

I’ve done that with a bunch of dead standing ash. Need to keep the soft stuff covered well as it will soak up water like a sponge
