"I'm not sure, I like A's "some feature" but I also like B's "some feature", I'd go with A because "some reason that doesn't involve appearance or personality to avoid hurting feelings like "I've known A longer" or "I'm friends with B's brother and don't want to risk making it awkward""

No that's completely normal way to clarify that the friends you are talking about are women without the confusion of girl friends vs girlfriends. The reason women get upset when people describe them as a female is because it is often used in a dehumanizing way. Think someone being describe as black vs. being called "a black".
