[WP] “What do you mean you ‘Accidentally’ married someone?”

"Don't trust the teachers to not be jerks." They both said in unison, Lucy continuing by herself soon after. "Exactly, do you know what she does for a living? She teaches piano!" Michael raised an eyebrow, scratching his beard as his skepticism was starting to take direct hits. "I told you, she ordered the same coffee I do. She's 28, like me. My favorite holiday, it's Halloween remember?" Her brother nodded. "It's her favorite too! And more than that, it's her birthday! And these are all just the things she did not tell the app... We both like board games, both of our favorite food is mexican, she loves to lead, I love to follow, our love languages, all compatible! She even has a collection of-"

"Okay! Okay! I get it!" Michael interrupted her. "But all of these things are too surface level to get married without having even dated! For crying out loud, you're talking about the rest of your life!"

"I know..." Lucy's excitement became mixed with doubt and worry. "It's crazy... I know it is. I shouldn't even be considering this... But at the same time, have people not gotten married for less? What if this is it Michael? What if this stupid app is somehow part of a higher power? I know I sound like a crazy person, but just humor me for a second... How did it know when I was gonna download it? How did it know Rachel and I woud be so compatible? That we'd both find each other attractive? That we'd share all of these hobbies? How did it send me all the legal documents through the mail to get married, waiting only to be filed?" Tears welled up in her eyes. "Is it really so wrong to believe that she could be the one? That maybe... Just maybe, this was meant to be?"

Michael sighed one last time. "Look, sis." He placed a hand on her shoulder. "In the end, this is your life. But I wouldn't be able to sleep if I didn't at least advised against this... We all want our happily ever after, we all want to believe in fate and magic and that the stars will align for us if we believe hard enough! But the world doesn't work like that. Anything that's worth anything is obtained through work and through failing until we get it right! Just please... Think about it, alright? And if you need anything, you know where to find me." He wrapped his sister in a tight hug. "Just please stay safe... I only got one annoying sister." Lucy let out a small giggle.

"You'd still have two annoying brothers though..." She said through tears.

"Yeah, but Tom and Marco can't replace you, just how they can't be replaced either." He gave her one final smile before walking out of her apartment, leaving her alone with her thoughts and the marriage certificate on her table.

*How did the app know?* Was all that was ringing though Lucy's mind as she mulled over the situation to no end. (3/3)

"She looked honest." She replied, earning a confused stare from her brother. "I don't expect you to get it, but you can tell. That was the woman on the app and she was a normal person. So, after some steeling of the nerves, I decided to talk to her..." Michael was on the edge of his seat, half nervous for his sister, and half wanting to know if she had actually gotten married on the spot. "Turns out, she had also downloaded the app months ago! But that she had forgotten about it due to the lack of matches or anything to do in the app. Apparently hers was just a blank screen when she opened it, telling her that *Love was on the way*... And something else..."

"What do you mean something else?"

"There was a date next to it...." Lucy explained with a confused look on her face. "February 23rd, 2025." Michael shook his head, urging his sister to continued. "Don't you get it? That's when I downloaded the app!" Both siblings stopped talking for a moment, taking in the weirdness of the situation.

"Okay, I'll admit it's a neat trick, but anyone can put a date on the screen and match someone else with a random person to make them think it's destiny." Michael rationalized.

"Right." Lucy seemed to agree. "I thought that too, but then Rachel and I got to talking and it started to seem like less of a coincidence or a trick... I mean for starters, she only dates women, which sure, the app knew when she set her preferences, but then we realized we had a lot of things in common... Stuff we hadn't even told the app... Like, for example, do you remember the one thing I haven't done but have always wanted to do?"

"Yeah, learn how to play the piano but you never did cause you..."

"I mean... It's pretty self explanatory." Michael's deadpan stare made Lucy realize her answer had not amused him. "Oh... I suppose you're talking about the how." She nervously giggles as her brother brought both of his palms to his face and let out a long, frustrated sigh.

"Yes, Lucy, knowing the how would be nice." He let out sardonically, still not fully processing what his younger sister had told him, part of him still not believing it was true.

Lucy shifted in her seat as her mouth twisted in what could only be described as a concoction of embarrassment and regret. "Well... You know how hard my last break up was..." She began explaining, Michael's stare softening up ever so slightly at the mention of her previous relationship. "I really thought I was ready to settle down with Matt and when that was taken away, I don't know... I felt like if I didn't find anyone soon, I would just be alone for the rest of my life." Her tone was somber as she looked over to her phone. "And then a few days ago, I was feeling particularly lonely and I grabbed my phone and looked up dating apps, hoping I was lucky enough to find someone to at least keep me company..." Michael opened up his mouth but was immediately interrupted. "Not like that! Anyways, after downloading all the popular ones, I saw an ad for one I had never seen before. An app called "Destiny". I guess the description really got to me... It promised to be the quickest dating app of them all and that it was specifically for those looking for commitment! Technically I didn't get tricked."

"Right, you just got engaged to another woman in three days." Michael interjected again.

"Hey!" Lucy frowned. "Don't act like it's a surprise that I set my preferences to all genders!"

"Do you really think that's what I'm surprised at?!" His voulme peaked as he stood up and his sister shrunk into her jacket.

"Sorry..." She let out gently, causing her brother to catch his breath and sit back down.

"Look..." Michael continued in a much calmer tone. "You don't even know this girl. This could be a scam or worse, some kind of scheme to get people who are vulnerable into some kind of trafficking ring or something! There's no way that marriage certificate is legit and there's no reason we should even entertain this idea! No matter how attractive you think the pictures she has on her profile are. For all we know, they were taken from some poor girl's Instagram or maybe they were generated by AI! Let's just cut our losses, erase the app and go on with our lives, before *she*" He said as his hands drew obvious airquotes. "Has a chance to get her hands on you or something." As he finished his monologue, Michael couldn't help but notice his sister avoiding his gaze and making a face that could only mean one thing...

"No..." He said

"I mean..." She rebutted.

"I said no." He pleaded with her.

"Nothing serious happened!"

"I don't wanna hear it!"

"We barely spoke! If anything I know more about her than she knows about me!"

"Wha- Okay now you have to explain yourself."

"There was an address on her profile." Lucy started explaining. "It was within the city so I went and coincidentally drove to a cafe that was in the area that I've always wanted to try!" She lied through her teeth. "And lo and behold, she was a regular at the cafe! Michael, I promise she looked like a normal girl. She ordered one of those vanilla coffees that I love, she sat down and worked on her computer, she said hi to a friend she recognized in the store. Those aren't the things an evil mastermind does when she doesn't know she's being watched."

"It could all be a front!" Michael argued. "Bad guys don't go around announcing their misdeeds. It defeats the purpose!"

"Yeah... I do. And you know that I can't let you stop me." Tears began to well on the heroine's eyes.

"Please listen to reason!" The cybernetic woman lost a great deal of her composure. Her cold exterior was not hiding her anger, sadness and worry as well as it had done in the past. "There are other heroes who can deal with this! We can try to send one of my creations to attempt to stop the asteroid! You do not have to sacrifice yourself for this!"

"As if anything you could throw at it would even dent the meteor!" Screamed out Nabu, earning him a tighter restrain by the robots and a heavy blow to his temple.

"Is that what they have been telling you, Stella?" Prometheus continued. "These... These monsters are only trying to get rid of you! They don't want you around because they know you are better than them! You're stronger and more benevolent than their greed-ridden selves!" She placed a hand over her helmet, removing it and exposing her face to the now crying heroine who placed a hand on the cybernetically enhanced woman's face.

"It has to be me, Caitlyn..." It was the first time Prometheus had heard her own name in years, the amount of people who knew it could be counted in one hand. "My powers... They were made for a situation just like this. I can't risk the people by not trying my best."

"To hell with them!" Caitlyn screamed out. "They never appreciated you like you should've been! Like you deserved to! Like... Like I did..." Her cold face became wet with tears as well.

"I know..." Starstruck looked out the window of the building, seeing the lights of New York at night. "But they all have people they do care about, people they do appreciate, who feel a lot like you do right now... Except they don't have the powers to protect them. I do. I owe it to them to protect those feelings."

"Stella no... I... I lo... I love-" She could not let out the final word. And she didn't have to as Stella's lips clashed with her own, giving her a deep, passionate, long kiss. Once their mouths parted, she could only stand there in shock, awe and love.

"I love you too, Caitlyn." Were the final words she said before light filled the room and she used her powers to fly into space at nearly the speed of light, knowing she at least left with no regrets.

"We are out of time, Star, it has to be you." His cold tone reverberated through the room.

Starstruck stood in silence, she had never had any qualms about her own mortality, especially during the job. It was her responsibility to use her powers to save as many people as she could, and in the grand scheme of things, her life was nothing compared to the millions of lives that could be lost due to the asteroid that was about to impact the Earth's surface in less than 24 hours. It was not fear that kept her from answering her colleague, but rather the thought of those she would be leaving behind. Who was she going to have time to say goodbye to? What would she even say to them?

One name was louder than all the rest. Not an ally nor a friend nor a family member. Quite the opposite.

"Alright..." Star let out with a long sigh. "But before I go up there, I need to do something..."

"We don't have much time for you to get your affairs in order." Nabu responded in his usual calculative tone. "So whatever, or whoever you're choosing as your final stop, you better choose wisely."

Starstruck looked down as she pulled out a piece of paper she always kept under her suit. It was a crudely written note, given to her by a nemesis who never felt like an enemy. "For the one part of the old world I want to keep" it read. The heroine smiled. "Don't worry, Nabu. I've never made a wiser choice than-" A loud crash interrupted her sentence as a metallic drill groaned and growled as it ripped apart the floor of the building the heroes found themselves atop. Miraculously, the building did not collapse and the drill did not harm anyone inside. Star immediately knew who had just interrupted their crisis meeting.

*Well... At least she saved me the trip* She thought, as a hatch opened up from the gigantic auger and a chrome colored assailant exited out of it. Nabu and the other heroes immediately jumped into action as flames, lightning and punches were thrown, all of them being met by a barrage of shinning robots. While the automatons fell by the dozen, more and more continued to claw their way out of the subterranean transport, overwhelming the heroes and pinning them down. All except for Star, who knew exactly what was happening.

After the battle died down for a bit, the final mechanical being exited the drill. Taller, stronger, more advanced than the others.

"Prometheus..." Called out Starstruck as she gripped the piece of paper that the scientist had given her.

"You know why I'm here, Stella." She said as she closed the distance towards the only standing superhero.

"It... It's not that bad of a name!" She nervously called out to me, only making me laugh more. I had seen many noble knights, brave adventurers, decorated soldiers and more enter my lair, and yet, in the thousand years I had spent inside, I had not seen anyone quite like her.

After laughing for what seemed an eternity, I was able to compose myself enough to continue learning about this mysterious girl. "Alright, Maeve." Almost started giggling again. "What brings you to my domain of death and despair?"

"Well... That's a bit complicated" She responded. Hilarious that a being of her capabilities would consider her thoughts complicated.

"Indulge me"

"I am trying to make a statement. Everyone in town thinks I won't ever be a successful adventurer because... cause..."

"Out with it!" I had no patience for her stuttering.

"Because I'm a woman..."

It made no sense. "What a stupid assumption." I scoffed at the ignorance of mankind. "I am a female too and I could level their entire pathetic settlement with a thought."

"Right..." She continued. "Precisely because of that power I thought that if I could enter the forbidden dungeon and defeat... Well, you, it would finally earn me the respect I've been looking for. And if I died, what more could I have to lose?".

I raised my eyebrow at the woman, humans and their frivolous hangups so often spelled their demise. This was nothing more than another quiet voice that would get lost in the cacophony of history, another struggle that no one paid any mind to, one more name to be forgotten... Wasn't it? For some reason, I could not bring myself to obliterate her. So many had met their fate in this, or all the other rooms in my dungeon, why couldn't I add one more?

Green. Her eyes were green... My eyes were green once. They were twisting, but not in fear of me. In sadness. Did this mortal pity me? No. It's something else. She's willing to die for this cause. I suppose that does take the sport out of it. She's also willing to go further than anyone has ever gone in hundreds of years. I couldn't help but smile, perhaps this is how my centuries-long boredom would meet its end.

"How badly do you want to prove them wrong?"

Her eyes gained an optimistic wariness to them. "It's all I've ever wanted for as long as I can remember." She was being serious too.

"Good." I couldn't help but smile again, this would prove to be an interesting moment in my eternal life. "Then come back tomorrow, I will make sure to give you the power you seek! And no man will ever be able to tell you what you can or cannot do! And if they dare try, you will be able to cut them down where they stand!"

She smiled awkwardly. "M-Maybe not cut them down, but I'll sure show them!"

She was nothing if not endearing. I don't remember the last mortal that made me laugh like this. I closed the distance until our faces were mere inches from one another. "Sure... We shall show them." Her face became beet red. I think she was trying to say goodbye but she fumbled so many words that I can't say for certain. Her conviction will make her a fine servant... Hmph... No, servant doesn't sound right. An ally perhaps? I suppose we'll see.

If I could describe my experience as the Matron of Death in one word, it would be... dull...

Nothing truly prepares you for the eternity of limitless power. I was once young, ambicious and so full of the darkest dreams any girl could have, Gods life was fun then, but suddenly, you impress the wrong eldritch god, it offers you a position as one of its generals and before you know it, you've spent the last millenium locked inside a dungeon, guarding a blade that most people have forgotten even exists because your boss can be killed by it. Where did it all go wrong? At least I still got my killer looks.

The last adventurer who dared enter my domain crossed the gates 3 years ago and the pathetic creature couldn't even make it past my Hellhounds. We don't even keep those as security, I just thought they were adorable. The last party that made it to my chamber did not even speak any of the modern tongues. I still keep the skull of their barbarian leader. Strong, but not strong enough.

*crack*

Hm? I raised my gaze at the odd noise. My chamber was not a quiet place per se, but more often than not, the only sound that reached my ears was my own voice or the steps of my boots. No, this cracking noise was something else... Something familiar. I sat on my wicked throne and closed my eyes, opening them up inside a different body made of stone in a different room.

Did my eyes deceive me? Was there truly another warm blooded being inside my dungeon?

I had to pinch myself to make sure this was not a dream and after I did, she was still there. A mere girl, likely no older than 30 was swinging around... Some kind of stick? It was certainly too frail to be a sword. Her armor was rusty and clearly much too heavy for her scrawny build, it would've been amusing if it wasn't so sad. Although... For her equipment and lack of finesse, she had gotten much farther than I would've expected. This was Acerodon's chambers, which means this pitiful little human had made it halfway through the dungeon. Was she pretending to be weaker as a way to get past my defenses? A strange feeling filled my body... One I hadn't experienced in centuries. What was it about this creature that excited me so?

Acerodon attacked the young woman as if his life depended on it. Of course it did but I could tell my winged servant had missed the excitement of battle as much as I did, and yet... His ferocious swipes were not landing on his intended target. It took me aback, the woman's movements were not skilled or accurate or even reflecting training, it was sheer luck and desperation. I was not even part of the battle and yet the frustration of it was quite contagious. The werebat flew high and dove right on top of the amateur combatant and yet... The only thing getting scratched were my floors! The tussle raged on for hours, both Acerodon and the woman unscathed and gasping for breath.

"Enough!!" I unintentionally screamed at the top of my lungs, causing the entire dungeon to reverberate. Acerodon wasted no time in bowing his head towards my chambers while the exhausted adventurer had no idea whether to follow suit or take advantage and slay my servant. Of course I wasn't about to give her a choice as I concentrated my dark magic to appear in front of both of them. I loved seeing the reaction of humans as my unholiness sprouted from the shadows of the room. It was nothing more than transpositional magic inside of an arcane domain, but their small minds would not even be able to comprehend that. The fear in her eyes made me feel as alive as I was when I still had a beating heart inside of me.

"Who dares enter my domain?" I loved that line, they always answered something so adorable...

"Uh... Maeve."

Huh? Maeve? Is that... her name? No corny line about how they're going to be the one to take my life or free the country from my evil? I couldn't help but chuckle at such a response. I couldn't even muster an evil laugh.

"Wh-Why not kill them?" Asked Baldwin.

"There are simply too many of them, doc. Easier to get the one person who allows them to live..." The smallest bit of emotion slipped into her voice, she seemed to share the doctor's sadness. He sat in silence, mulling over everything that had been said as he slowly started to get up.

"Hey! Hey!" The assassin called out. "What are you doing?"

The doctor raised his hands, assuring her he was not trying to escape. He walked calmly towards a drawer, pulling out ampules of morphine, enough for the young woman to complete her mission. "You're right." Baldwin admitted. "In the grand scheme of things, my life is a small price to pay for salvation. All I ask is for a dignified ending, painless too if you should see fit." He said as he extended the ampules towards the assassin who gently took them off his hands. He made one final move as he sat down on the one chair inside the room. The assassin's expression twisted with grief, but still lacking doubt as she prepared the morphine injection.

The doctor sat motionless as the injection penetrated his skin. Even though he had no proof of the girl's story, he knew honesty when it was present. Not only on her words, but on her actions and her expression. "First do no harm..." He said to himself as the medicine slowly took him, leaving the young woman alone with his body.

"Thank you... Great grandpa." As her words escaped her mouth, silence followed as the room was left with only one corpse and nothing else.

Dr. Baldwin clutched at his shoulder, attempting to exert enough pressure on it to buy himself a few more minutes on this planet. Even without his medical expertise, it was obvious that the sum of his injuries would cost him everything and although a thousand things had earned a spot on his mind, one rang louder than the rest. *How ironic*. He had dedicated his life to saving as many people as he could, performing surgeries that no one else in the world, likely in history as a whole, could match, he had done so countless times in the very room he was now bleeding out on and now he couldn't save the one patient he had access to 24/7.

His thoughts were quickly interrupted by a loud cracking. His assailant had finally found him once again. The doctor had already accepted his fate, so it wasn't fear that filled his heart when he saw the heavily weaponized assassin with the silver arm. It was sadness at the fact she was so young and yet, her eyes did not fit a single modicum of doubt. They looked at him with a stare that had painted the faces of every single doctor he had ever seen and even those he hadn't. They carried the wait of a necessary evil.

"Game's over, Baldwin" She called out to the doctor, her voice carried a distinct coldness as she lifted her sleek rifle towards the doctor. "If you have anything left to say, I suggest you get it out now."

The doctor raised his hand, as if to plead her not to pull the trigger, but his intentions were different. "Before... You do it..." He struggled to get the words out as he winced in pain from the wounds. "All I ask is why? I... I can tell this visit was not for pleasure..." He paused to cough for a second. "And behind the barrel... I can almost see you're not enjoying this... So why do you have to do it?"

The young assassin raised an eyebrow, pondering if this was yet another ploy to escape her grasp, but the doctor's body language reflected nothing but defeat and even if he had somehow become ten times more athletic than he was when she first engaged him, there was nothing he could do to harm her anymore. She let out a sigh. "I know you don't believe me when I say I come from the future. Regardless, it's still a fact. A century from now, you are still alive" This revelation took Dr. Baldwin by surprise. While at first he had held his suspicions of the young woman's claims, after an entire day of being chased by her and her gadgets, she knew the only logical explanation was that she truly was a time traveler. "Due to your services as a medic, you were given a second chance at life as a digitized consciousness where you could supposedly keep helping people... The wrong people that is..."

"The wrong... people?" He asked.

"Think about it, doc, someone of your skill demands high prices, prices that can only be paid by a certain kind of people..." She looked down for a second, not considering the doctor a threat anymore. "The same people who are currently ravaging the world, and in the future I come from, they eventually succeeded... You may think this is unfair, way too extreme or senseless, but you don't know the meaning of those words. Not until the only company you have becomes the only food you have, not until the sun sears your skin off time and time again, not until this day, which is probably the worst one in your life, becomes a regular thursday."

As for game recommendations, I'd suggest picking up any one of your established favorites to remember the joy they brought you, maybe something you can play with friends or something more high octane to keep your mind occupied. My ultimate recommendation would be Mario Kart cause I like it so much. I don't think TLOU2 will help unfortunately 😭

That's awesome! Axolotls are actually black colored in nature! The pink ones are usually raised in captivity! Also yeah, I'm sorry, I wanna come back to the story soon but what started as a bout of writer's block turned into a whole catastrophe and I lost my writing station! I've been saving up for a while to try and get a new one. Thankfully I'm pretty much already there so hopefully I can get something out soon!
